FWIW, the EXPORT parameter causes a

ENTNAME XATTR LINKAGE(XPLINK),SCOPE(EXPORT)

statement to get generated, so you could include one yourself, with whatever
macro you are using.

Thanks for the that pointer. I had not gotten to that manual as yet. But for a
follow on question. As these are routines called from C, I've been using
EDCPRLG as the entry code. Can I switch those out for CEEENTRY, as EDCPRLG does
not have the EXPORT keyword. Taking a quick look at the CEEENTRY macro, it
looks like I will need to code MAIN=NO, as these are not main routines.

Again, thanks for the pointer. The XL C manuals only reference EDCPRLG for
assembler routine. I can see that the manual you referenced will become one of
my goto references for the near term future.

Re: SAS for ZOS 9.4.8 Install/Upgrade Experiences?

2023-09-25 Thread Paul Beesley
I've just done the first part of the install of SAS 9.4, not the easiest of
jobs.
I built the Software Depot on my laptop then used the Windows TAR command
(which I didn't know existed) to create a tar file of each of the 10
directories. Then uploaded these to a ZFS on the mainframe and used OMVS TAR to
decompress them into the original directories. Used the SASDepotCheck.rexx to
verify it had all been uploaded correctly.

Agree re support .. I raised a few cases during the install and they didn't get
immediately picked up by a mainframe person, but usually got a reply within 24
hours, no real issues..

The last 9.4 upgrade I did, I ended up transferring it to my desktop, and then
from there to a ZFS on z/OS. The problem then was that the direct to z/OS
method was broken on the SAS end and I would imagine that they probably fixed
it in the past 5 months since that time, but it wasn't a real hardship to
download it to the PC first.

The rest of the install was identical to installing any of the previous 9.4
releases for the past several years. If you have any specific questions, feel
free to send me a note. I had the impression when I was working with SAS
though that they no longer had much in the way of z/OS (or any mainframe)
experienced people, but it might just have been a bad day or that the mainframe
people were out sick.

Thank you for sharing - prayers for his family at this time of loss.

Bob was a terrific individual. Always kind, friendly, and helpful. He was

they revolutionized the SHARE session scheduling process among other things.
They also expanded the MVS Technical Steering Committee to include all of

Re: Any recommendations for a 3270 emulator for Android

2023-09-25 Thread John S. Giltner, Jr.
I have used Mocha TN3270 also. I believe the lite version limits you to 5
minutes of connect time. Not bad if you only need to make a quick change.

The purchase price for the full version is inexpensive, IIRC under $30 USD, and
once purchased you can install on multiple Android devices. So if you have a
phone and a tablet, you can have it on both for the one price.

2023-09-25 Thread Edward Gould

Bill,
There are at least 2 large DC’s that run a majority of their production in
assembler, that I know personally. The coding is quite complex, ie multi
tasking in Production and doing cross memory “stuff”. While I know 2 isn’t a
lot there is hope yet. The multitasking is a wonder and I am glad I only got
roped into one instance of helping to debug.
Most of this code has not changed since the 80’s except when thy wanted to take
advantage of new features of the OS.
The cross memory application seems to break with every release of Z/os but I
stayed away from it on purpose as I did not want to be responsible for anything
that broke. It was a political nightmare.

Well, you might try Rocket Terminal emulator Web edition. Its web based, but
you have to have the server running somewhere in the shop. We happen to be
trying it right now in a zCX container on z/OS.

"Outdated" terminal emulators? They wish. Not that I have anything against new
and especially better ideas. But I think Attachmate, Rocket, QWS3270 and others
work just fine. --- Bob Bridges, robhbridges@ gmail. com, cell 336 382-7313 /*

I recently received an email advertisement for a product called “Virtel Web
Access,the browser-based 3270 emulation technology to replace outdated TN3270
terminal emulators(like PCOMM, Attachmate, Rocket/BlueZone and more), also can
replace expensive VTAM session managers(like TPX, CL/SuperSession, Tubes, and
more).”

I don’t have any experience with it.

Zowe, last I saw, ships an SMP/E install as well as a “convenience” build that

In my experience just the opposite is true.

The 'pax' is a manual download/install effort each time.

By contrast, once a product has been installed with SMP/E, it
immediately qualifies for automatic unattended RECEIVE ORDER (including
HOLDDATA). We do this daily.

We perform automatic ACCEPT/APPLY every weekend of Zowe (and 62 other
SMP/E installed products). We could never pull off such a feat if we had
to use the 'pax' method for Zowe or any of the others.

Yep.

It don't see an obvious virtual DUALD pointer. Is this even in home
addressable storage?
