Re: [GNC] Can I get help with GnuCash here

2024-04-08 Thread Geoff

Hi Bob

First, a matter of email list etiquette. Please always reply to the
list email address (gnucash-user@gnucash.org) so that everyone can see
your questions and answers.

Second, unfortunately I don't have any experience with either MAC or the
GnuCash OFX/QFX importer, so I can't assist you with this particular
problem apart from a couple of pointers:
* Has the bank that provides the 4th credit card recently changed their
IT systems?
* Can you compare one of the failed OFX/QFX files to an earlier
(successful) version, or to one from another bank?
* There have been some changes to the OFX/QFX routines in GnuCash
version 5 (https://gnucash.org/news.phtml) - perhaps you could try
upgrading to the latest version? *Be sure to take a backup first*.

Hopefully someone else on this list can chime in with further suggestions.

Geoff,
I am using Ver 4.9, Build ID 4.9+(2021-12-18) of GnuCash.
My computer is a MAC M1 with Sonoma 14.2.1.
Problem: I have 4 credit cards where I go into each in order to download
the transactions. I use OFX/QFX for my downloads. Three of the four work
perfectly however on the fourth transaction-download, all the
transactions download perfectly. I then allocate each transaction to an
expense or income account. When I finished and all the transactions are
in the green I hit the submit button and all of the transactions
disappear as they should. Then I look over to my register for that
particular credit card and all those transactions that I just submitted
disappear. I then Iook throughout all my register and cannot find those
transactions...they just went poof. It is strange it happens on only one
credit card account.
Please note, I have been using GnuCash for several years and have never
had this problem up until now...it is most disturbing.

Can you help me?
Bob

Yes, you most certainly have come to the right place.  Just send
through the following information:

* Your computer operating system type & version:
(Windows 10 / Linux Mint 21.3 / macOS Sonoma / ...)
* Your version of GnuCash
(Help -> About)
* Your question / problem

And, to paraphrase the former president you quoted, "Do you best, the

If it’s only happening with one register I’d be checking I don’t have any

Both version 5.6 and 5.6-1 reject my credit card qif import with the

"Missing QIF investment action for transaction dated 04/06/2024."

Reinstalled version 5.5 and imported the qif successfully.

Just out of curiosity is the word "Discover" somehow a protected word,
function, directive or key word in the Gnucash code? Everytime I import my
Discover Card qif it asks me for the date format. No other qif import does.

Re: [GNC] Keep running into "Could not get lock file for postgres..."

2024-04-08 Thread john
It usually means that GnuCash is not quitting cleanly. Are there any errors in
the tracefile? (https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile).

In the SQL backend it's actually a record in the gnclock table, so a simpler
work-around would be to use the postgres CLI to remove that record.

Thanks Ken, I just tried yours, still the same. I also tried adding
transparent borders & margins. As we get older we need a little flexibility.
All the other css "tags' not a problem
Although I was using: "user".gnc-class-user-register-primary {
background-color: #403f3f;  color: white;  padding-top: 11px;  padding-bottom:
11px; }

I don't know if the padding values are available to change. You'd have
to try it. First, make sure you are setting the register settings that
are available by making the color something ridiculous like pink, to be
sure your syntax is correct. You can always change it back to white or
whatever you were using. I have variables set in my CSS file that I can
reference in many setting statements, so if I want to change a setting
for "normal text" everywhere, I only have to change it once, at the
beginning of the file.

[GNC] Recording transactions (date)

2024-04-08 Thread R Losey
Since I first learned about recording transactions, I have always dated a
transaction on the date I wrote the check; similarly, when entering credit
card transactions, I use the date that I actually used the credit card.

Recently, however, I was having a discussion with a friend and he said that
he uses the bank or credit card date of entry for all of his transactions.

I thought this was strange - probably because it is different from the
method I've used all of my life. Perhaps I am the odd one... or perhaps
it's merely a matter of choice, so I thought I'd bring it up to this list
to see what people think about it.

>From (a very brief) research about this topic, perhaps this is the
difference between cash basis accounting and accrual accounting?

After thinking about it for a bit, one issue with using the date that the
transactions occur is the reports, especially if one has repeating
transactions. For example, if the satellite service bill is paid each
month on the 28th, using my method, I record a transaction on the 28th. My
friend will see it on the 29th or 30th, but if the weekend or holiday hits
just right, it can be the 1st or 2nd before he sees it. In the long run
everything should be the same, but the monthly sub-totals can look odd.
Checks can be even worse... someone may hang onto one for weeks.

I'd appreciate thoughts on the topic.

[GNC] Import QIF files

2024-04-08 Thread Beryl Lymer
I have been importing QIF files into GNUcash successfully for several years.
However, for recent files, I am getting an error of ‘MISSING QIF INVESTMENT
ACTION FOR TRANSACTION DATED xx/xx/.  The erroneous transaction seems to be
the last of those imported.  The import will not complete.  I have had to
manually enter all the transactions.

I am downloading the files from Santander online banking.  Not sure if it is
Santander or Gnucash that’s the issue.

[GNC] OFX duplicate transactions and missing ones.

2024-04-08 Thread Jeffrey Black
Right now I am limited to using my phone for e-mail so I cannot search for
related mails or bug reports easily. I had multiple line surges that fried 3
towers and my laptop computer. Not to mention a cascade failure of all of my
hard-drives and backup drives and printers.

Somewhere along the way, under Ubuntu, snaphub (I thought it was snapd) updated
from 5.? To 5.6, to 5.6-1 so I do not remember which version I used. But, it
created duplicate transactions of ofx imports which is a nightmare since I did
the imports on a 30-day cycle. Now that I am attempting to reconcile the
affected accounts, I discover that there are missing transactions as well.

Has anyone reported this?

Or should I just create a new imbalance‐USD to balance the books? I am talking
about imports thar were a couple of months late. Yes I know sloppy work on my
part.

It appears to have had a upset at the server side.
I managed to get to the list of moderator requests and dump the spam
this morning, and your email did not appear in the list of messages
waiting.
Then I could not get any further with reaching any of the gnucash-devel
pages.
Derek runs the server, I'm sure he will look into the problem.

I think it is a philosophical difference.
There are legal ramifications, especially when you are spending money.
If you future date transactions you may spend money you don't actually
have. In my jurisdiction a business doing this is in big trouble, for
"trading while insolvent".
It is not the difference between cash and accrual accounting, but is
part of the differences.

Beryl,
I can't help on the specifics as I only occasionally do imports. I will
give the request to supply your operating system and GnuCash version when
reporting a problem.

Also, and the main reason I replied, is to point out two emails in the same
day with that same error message while doing an import. The other user was
using the recently released version 5.6.

Hi, I saw yesterday, I think, that there is an update to address this issue
regarding regular QIF imports (vs investment ones). That would require
installing the latest fix update if I understood what I read.

Re: [GNC] Import QIF files

2024-04-08 Thread Geoff

Hi Beryl

This particular error is a problem with GnuCash version 5.6, and was
resolved by one of the developers on Sunday:

https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2024-April/111404.html

You have three choices:
(1) Downgrade to GnuCash version 5.5
https://gnucash.org/download.phtml

(2) Upgrade to the latest nightly build that contains the fix
https://code.gnucash.org/builds/

(3) Wait until GnuCash 5.7 is released.

I am downloading the files from Santander online banking.  Not sure if it is

This is the formal terminology that the accountancy expert bodies deem
"revenue recognition". Numerous formal (see IFRS and GAAP) publications
exist, with a much better supporting evidence than our informal discussions
here.

Re: [GNC] Recording transactions (date)

2024-04-08 Thread Adrien Monteleone
While there are other considerations, such as cash versus accrual and
following the Recognition Principle, I see this as more of a general
case of Your Books vs. the Bank's Books.

You keep Your Books.

The Bank keeps theirs.

You then reconcile the two. (which does *not* involve changing dates)

Simply copying what the bank has misses the opportunity to catch someone
else's errors. (they *do* happen)

This is a similar question of entering your own transactions as they
occur, or just downloading from the bank and importing.

It is a personal choice, but can have other implications as noted.

Adrien
