Thanks for the further tips.  I was unable to find gnucash.trace in
either /tmp or /var/tmp (or their subdirectories.  Before trying to pipe
the logs to the console as described in
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Flatpak#Getting_Console_Output, I tried
running the quote retrieval from the command line, as you suggested.
This resulted in the following error message:

Can I just copy the entire tarball extract into

to limit what I copy or keep any residual files in that directory tree?

If not, how can I update F::Q within my flatpak installation?
The update will be available when someone (probably I) have time
to update the F::Q module in gnucash-on-flatpak. That update will
be immediately available in nightly builds; it won't be available
on Flathub until the regular release at the end of September.

It's not possible to use CPAN, and consequently gnc-fq-update, in
the flatpak, but you can do it manually similarly to the way you
applied the yahoo_json patch: Download and untar the release
tarball or clone the repo then copy Quote.pm and the contents of
Quote/ into the right places in your flatpak.

[GNC] Gnu cash Android app and sync

2023-08-17 Thread Paras Desai
Dear all thanks for your kind response. As it turn out to be an unanimous
opinion that Android app is not worth, from all of your collective experience,
i am not going to reinvent the wheel .

At present, i am using a mobile expense posting simple app, which I use to
record day to day transaction, which almost mimic my chart of account in GC.
MY only objective was to check if auto sync was possible

Re: [GNC] Need advice I use Quickbooks and only for personal use. All I do is bank accounts entries & credit cards, just use P&L & Balance Sheet reports

2023-08-17 Thread Brad Morrison

Hi Michael/all,

It does not appear that Square lists a GnuCash app as an option -
https://squareup.com/us/en/app-marketplace Square also doesn't have Odoo
(https://www.odoo.com/) listed as an app option.

I do not know what those kinds of technical integrations would involve,
but I assume that it would be a lot of work!

My point in reminding people of the limits of GnuCash's capabilities is
to say that if we want to increase those capabilities, they need to be
paid for. It is unfair to expect people to donate as much to this or any
open source project as the core folks of such projects typically do.

"If anyone is interested in expanding GnuCash's capabilities, feel free
to donate to the project here (https://www.gnucash.org/donate.phtml),
just be aware that for US based taxpayers, GnuCash is not a 501c3
registered nonprofit and does not have a fiscal sponsor like some other
open source projects (https://sfconservancy.org/projects/current/ or
https://www.spi-inc.org/projects/), so those donations may not be tax
deductible if the taxpayer itemizes their deductions
(https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc506)."

I wouldn't mind donating my time to try to help GnuCash apply to SFC
&/or SPI to become a fiscally sponsored nonprofit, but I would need help
and permission.

Thanks,

Brad

I disagree in the sense that in the days of pen and ink on paper all
of those things were done before we had computers. Using gnucash you
can do anything you could pen and ink on paper.

What is being said is that gnucash is not an "integrated business

Components like POS, inventory, payroll, etc. are not PART of
":general ledger" (gnucash as normally used). Those other components
would be storing data that isn't financial as well as what is and is
sent to by "feeds".

For example, besides things like unit cost of batch an inventory
system is dealing with things like shelving location, restock level,
primary and secondary sources, etc. A POS system is tracking things
like the ID of the sales person currently at the register. The payroll
system things like emergency contact, length of service, etc.

MY druthers? I am opposed to "monolithic" systems, much preferring
"modular" systems << and remember, I used to work on/design LARGE

while I do not think the developers of gnucash should tackle these
other components PERHAPS it would make sense to make gnucash (the
general ledger component) a module that could receive "feeds". Then
others could decide to tackle one or more of these other parts of "a
business system". Hopefully also keeping them modular (as they might
be feeding each other as well as feeding general ledger. For example,
POS would feed both "general ledger" (the money part of the sale)  AND
inventory  (the physical part of the sale).

Re: [GNC] Update F::Q in flatpak GC?

2023-08-17 Thread john
IndiaMutual.pm has a new perl dependency IO::String
(https://metacpan.org/pod/IO::String) as of F::Q 1.57. That dependency is in
the nightlies but not the release flatpak. It's pure perl and has no
dependencies so you have a couple of ways forward:

* Get the source code (there are links in the sidebar on the left on the
IO::String page) and install it in the flatpak's perl directory as IO/String.pm
* Install a recent nightly build and apply the F::Q update to that
* If you don't need the IndiaMutual module you can restore the 1.56 version
that doesn't need IO::String.

2023-08-17 Thread john
Donating money isn't going to get anything implemented. Not only is it really
expensive to hire or contract for programmers, the GnuCash project doesn't have
the necessary overhead resources to even try: There's no GnuCash corporate
entity to make contracts and nobody in the core group with the time or
inclination to find, recruit, hire/contract, or manage paid programmers--or
even to create that corporate entity to make contracts.

At this point we don't even have enough programmers to make much progress on
moving GnuCash forward on the published roadmap
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Roadmap) never mind the several hundred open
enhancement requests, several hundred more open bugs, paying down GnuCash's
huge burden of technical debt, and keeping up with technology changes in
dependency packages.

Re: [GNC] Gnu cash Android app and sync

2023-08-17 Thread Adrien Monteleone
If that app has the ability to auto-export, then you might be able to
set up some sort of script or shortcut to send that to your desktop, and
then set up some sort of folder-watcher to trigger an import via
gnucash-cli, but really, that seems like a lot of work for little
benefit. Of course, some folks just like to fiddle and solve problems
for their own sake.

   /app/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.32.0/x86_64-l
   inux /app/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.32.0 /app/lib/perl5/5.32.0/x86_64-linux

This suggests to me that the changes in the pm scripts depend on
changes in the actual program code.

Can I just copy the entire tarball extract into
   /var/lib/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/current/active/, or do I need
to limit what I copy or keep any residual files in that directory tree?

   Thanks for your support!

Look in the tracefile ([3]https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) or
   run `gnucash-cli -Q info` (see

how to run that from a flatpak) to see what the errors are.

Now that I copied over the Quote directory and the Quote.pm script in

Sorry, dumb question. I found the tarball here:

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not sure I'm getting the right source.
 [7]https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote offers a zip
download of the code from master. Is this the 1.58 release code or
the current development version? If the latter, where should I be
 looking for the release?

I am running GC 5.3+ as a flatpak under Ubuntu Studio 22.04 LTS.
The included F::Q version is 1..56, which I have modified with the

quite a few fixes for various sources.
The last I heard, it wasn't possible to update F::Q within a

If so, when can a flatpak update of GC containing F::Q 1.58 be

Brad,

Does Square have a CSV (or Excel) export option?

It wouldn't be 'integration' but you should be able to get the data out
of Square and into GnuCash that way.

Part of that process could perhaps be somewhat automated, though likely
not all of it.

Adrien

Hi Michael/all,

It does not appear that Square lists a GnuCash app as an option -
https://squareup.com/us/en/app-marketplace Square also doesn't have Odoo
(https://www.odoo.com/) listed as an app option.
