Re: [GNC] Today's search....for .lck
OK, lets try to get to the bottom of this. When I say I have had issues, I am unaware that I should not take the suggestion of 'open anyway' unless I have tried several times to get an answer to why I have had this issue, and what to do about it. I think I said in the OP that the message I have been getting about not having rights was not the first 'save' but I think I may have had finger problems, around then, as I said in the OP. I will try, again, to send the list of files, I thought I had created a jpg. For information, the file that opens today when I start Gnucash is - GNU FEB 12 2019.gnucash.20230730134528 If that is the date and time for the file I had open it coincides with my recollection of the date and time I was working when the message 'could not write to file, etc., arose. As you said there are multiple files opened since. That of course means each would have its own file (different filenames, ideally in different directories (file folders). By the same token, it is possible to have multiple files for the same entity, either intentionally* or accidentally. IF, when you open your books under gnucash all you see are old transactions (you know you have been entering transactions with effective dates later than that) you probably have accidentally created more than one file. Having work habits to prevent this sort of thing is not strictly speaking a gnucash problem. If you were say writing a paper using your favorite word processor it would be important that you didn't end up with duplicate files (some of your editing done to one, some to the other) Tell us, what is the NAME of your gnucash books and what directory (file folder) is it in. If you do not KNOW a unique answer to this question, then that is the first thing you need to find out. Thank you for that. However, a file search for any file of that structure only delivers 1 dated 18.02.2022, which I have mentioned in an earlier post is the date on my 'currently loaded' file which won't save. There are a number of files with .GCM and number with LCK dated 2021, others with .log, many more (recent ones) with shortcut. All the rest are datestamped. Re: [GNC] Today's search....for .lck
First, for attachment images, they need to be 'as attachment' and *not* inline. That is, in your e-mail app, attach the screenshot. Do not just paste it into the message mixed in with the text. You may also have a setting in your e-mail app for this to toggle between 'inline' and 'attachment'. For the mailing list - you *do not* want 'inline'. (the mailing list software will simply strip them out of the message) Second, if you say there are hundreds of files, a screenshot isn't going to cut it anyway. (it would take many screenshots) I'm not well versed on Windows command line, so without me spending time looking it up, maybe someone else who knows off the top of their head can advise a command that will export your file list to a text file that you can attach here. Of course, you'd want to use whatever options are available to include the original creation date & time, as well as a last modified date & time. (those can be shown or not shown as desired) From that list, we should be able to reasonably guess which is your latest file (or maybe even several candidates for it) and then you can open them and confirm. I suspect though, that you have a condition where there are transactions in one file that aren't in another, and vice versa. And this may involve more than 2 files. You'll have to decipher that for yourself once you figure out the file situation, and then we can proceed with helping you consolidate them into one book. Lastly, it would be good to get a handle on how this happened in the first place, so the problem doesn't continue to compound. But I too don't think you lost any data unless you started deleting .gnucash files without backups. (.lck files aren't necessarily a problem) .gcm files store some preferences for each book. It would be best not to lose those for now, but losing them wouldn't be data lost. Regards, Adrien On 8/7/23 10:03 AM, Mahon Finbar via gnucash-user wrote: Thank you for that. Re: [GNC] Today's search....for .lck
In my earlier email I suggested that you tell us the complete path/filename for those files. Windows likes to foreshorten them in some cases, especially if there are external drives involved. I should have said complete unqualified path/filename in case the path names have been shortened to stay under the character count limit or to identify an external drive. Re: [GNC] Finance quote not working
Paras, How have you set up the security editor entry for RELIANCE in your gnucash file. I have set it up in my file as follows and it returns the same price details as gnucash-cli without error. Re: [GNC] Today's search....for .lck
Barry, At one point you advised you had GnuCash files in: C:\Users\Barry Mahon\Documents\Tax accounts and returns\ now, you are saying it is: C:\users\administrato\documents These are 2 separate locations and two separate 'users' on this machine. Where do you *think* your GnuCash file is supposed to be? (full qualified path please) And what do you *think* its file name is supposed to be? (just the file name here is fine) And for completeness, can you trigger that 'cannot write to file' warning that you originally reported, and send us a screenshot? Thanks. Wow. I just went to the archives of this list and discovered that not all the messages were appearing in my Gmail folder. Specifically there was a reply to my first message about providing a path/filename where you provided C:\users\administrato\documents is where the only one which "fits" i.e. where GNU FEB 12 2019.gnucash is. There are literally hundreds of others to which Adrien has now responded. He correctly suggests that is a major part of your problem, and begins to work on a solution. For some reason that message from you is not in my Gmail, but that is a completely different problem that is for another place. Presumably administrato is your root user name with different rights than your ordinary Barry Mahon user name. Part of the untangling will be to aggregate everything under one user name, preferably without root rights. I am not qualified to help you with that. -- David Carlson ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Re: [GNC] Today's search....for .lck
Yeah, I'm suspecting the "can't write to file" message is when trying to save the file back to its original location which is under a different user than the one who's desktop is front and center at that moment. But we'll need that error message screenshot to confirm. And then there is the obvious backup file(s) mess to clean up. And as you note, that will likely involve copying files from one user to another and correcting their permissions accordingly. (before any cleanup within GnuCash itself!) I'm not versed on such, but I'm sure someone here is. Regards, Adrien p.s. — I used to use Gmail for this list till I discovered the same problem so I switched to an account provided by my ISP and it has been a few years with no issues. (though I now use the list via gmane. And that reminds me, I'm long overdue for a wiki write up for gmane I promised!) On 8/7/23 4:23 PM, David Carlson wrote: Wow. Re: [GNC] Finance quote not working
Paras just a thought, if you had been using Yahoo earlier, the symbol was RELIANCE.NS , if you use nseindia you remove the .NS from symbol Saludos Cordiales Murugan From: gnucash-user on behalf of David H Sent: Monday, August 7, 2023 5:05 PM To: Paras Desai Cc: gnucash-user@gnucash.org ; list+gnuc...@jdlh.com Subject: Re: [GNC] Finance quote not working Paras, How have you set up the security editor entry for RELIANCE in your gnucash file. Re: [GNC] finance Quote Not working
A tip I've often used on Windows... the "tab" key does file expansion. So, if I'm at C:\ in Windows, I can type "Prog" followed by the tab key, and it will expand to "Program Files", with the quotes needed. (If it brings up the wrong directory, such as "Program Data", continued presses of the tab key will move to the next matching file). I find this MUCH easier to navigate to an executable file on Windows, and it helps to avoid spelling mistakes.
