Yes, they switched to a 'begins with' search. (release notes are your friend - they are always posted on the website and here on the mailing list in the release announcement) Since the list also shows more recent descriptions first, it is now like 4.x, but instead of only giving you an auto-fill of the last used similar description, you get more choices. The problem with "keep typing to narrow it down" is I'm suddenly typing 10+ characters where 2 or 3 would have been enough before, but that doesn't mean the new method can't have improved. Re: [GNC] Can not resize GnuCash Preferences window
This may not be ideal for your situation, but try a higher resolution with a larger system font. Most modern video hardware performs better and lasts longer at its native resolution though. There are ways to find that on Debian. Ideally, run it at native resolution and adjust UI items to suit your needs. (and/or use the accessibility features) However, 768 seems like a reasonable minimum vertical resolution to target since it is fairly common for screens less than 1080. I think the lack of sizing control is a GTK issue, but the devs would know for sure. Not a real solution, but a just barely effective, half-donkeyed, duct tape work-around. Note: this is an old problem that has been around for YEARS. Previously, I was able to work around it by moving the top of the preferences window above the top of the screen, but apparently that (and a lot of other things) don't work in "modern" Gnome. Re: [GNC] GnuCash 5.3 autofill headaches
I haven't upgraded yet so it still uses the contains search. I found that if I stop and think about what is unique in the description I want it helps narrow things down quicker with less typing. For instance, I have several descriptions that start with "Contribute To". I found that if I start typing say "To V" I get the description I want in three keystrokes. With the new begins with search I'll be back to typing "Contribute To V" to get what I want. There is always a trade off somewhere it would seem. Your suggestion to move the Preferences window by holding down the "Windows" key while dragging the window with the mouse does work. Thanks! So, there are at least 3 ways to move the window: 1) Alt-F7, then use arrows on keyboard. 2) Alt-F7, then drag window with mouse 3) hold down the "Windows" key while dragging the window with the mouse (which seems the easiest to me). Unfortunately, I still do not know any way to resize the window to less that the minimum dimensions set by the programmer(s). As for resolution, the native resolution of my computer is 1920 x 1080. That does show the whole Preferences window, but the display is just too small to be used for anything except squinting just long enough to edit the Preferences, and then switch the resolution back to 1360 x 768, which is the highest my eyes can really "work with". BTW, since I am not a programmer, I can't change how a program is coded. That's a shame, because I am just guessing that making a window resizeable might not be that hard to do. But of course, that's easy for me to say . . . Apologies if I'm misremembering, but I think you're in Windows. (The rationale for making _any_ window non-resizable escapes me, yet Windows itself contains many such.) In Windows, it's up to the programmer to make a window resizable or not. If the programmer makes it non-resizable, as far as I know there's no way for the user to override that. > As for resolution, the native resolution of my computer is 1920 x 1080. > That does show the whole Preferences window, but the display is just > too small to be used for anything except squinting just long enough to > edit the Preferences, and then switch the resolution back to 1360 x > 768, which is the highest my eyes can really "work with". Two settings are relevant: resolution and scale. In Windows 10, right-click an empty area of your desktop and select Display Settings. In the dialog that opens, change the setting in the drop-down list under "Scale and layout / Change the size of text, apps, and other items". You may find that changing that setting makes your 1920×1080 display readable. (Already-open windows may or may not resize themselves, but any new windows should display in the desired scale.) In other versions of Windows the same setting exists, but you may have to get to it in a different way are different. Re: [GNC] GnuCash 5.3 autofill headaches
I just upgraded to 5.3-1 on Monterey and it works fine. I did have to accept the suggestion from the list and then Tab but it populated with an autofill of memo, amounts, et cetera from my last transaction with the same Description. I'll add here that I use GnuCash with old paper and pen habits, that is, I use the 'Description' field as strictly a 'Payee/Payor' field. Actual descriptive information I put in the Notes and/or Memo fields. (Notes for the whole transaction, Memos for things specific to a split) That usage greatly simplifies my Description list.
