Re: [GNC] Gnucash 5.1 Online Quotes not working

2023-05-24 Thread David H
Hmm that setup works for me using a source of Alphavantage US as opposed to
Yahoo as JSON that Kalpesh specified as you have typed above and returns a
price for BRK-B. Did you say you had you Alphavantage api key setup in
Gnucash preferences under Finance Quote tab ?

On another note it for anyone else reading this it seems Yahoo have turned
off access to the version 6 api as I am now getting a HTTP Response 404
(Not Found) error when trying to use it and have had to revert my
YahooJSON.pm module to use v7 which gives an unauthorised error.

Cheers David H.

Thanks David that works – still no online quotes in Gnucash

I can run gnucash-cli from the CMD and get the desired results for ASX and
ALPHAVANTAGE as per attached, but no online quotes within Gnucash – see
settings attached.

Is there another step I need to do in Gnucash to get this to work?

It's a windows exe and you'll need double quotes around the path name because
of the embedded spaces - see Geert's email -

Hi Kevin,

Note that Gnucash Get Quotes has been completely rewritten so there is no
longer a gnc-fq-check script in gnucash version 5 that's why you are getting
the error, check your C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin folder - this was
mentioned in the release notes :-) There's only gnc-fq-update and
gnc-path-check (which you can't run manually apparently) now so probably
nothing wrong with your Perl install.

Hi,

I have those exact settings selected as below and it's not updating see
attached

Last update was with v4.xx in April 2023 see attached.

Previously with V4.xx was working fine, all I have done is upgrade to v5.1,
uninstall Perl and run the online price retrieval tool which has reinstalled
the latest Perl.

Nothing else on my PC has changed and still running Norton with the same

Kevin -

In addition to below what Murugan has mentioned . two additional items to
try:

1) Check which perl is GNC using (this is to eliminate munged up path
or GNC is looking at different Perl install base - unlikely but validation
won't hurt)

To do so, type in following in an clean CMD window:

where Perl

This for me returns back 'C:\Strawberry\Perl\bin\perl.exe'

2) Start with a clean slate in GNC . also recommend that you fully turn
off Norton mal-ware/anti-virus software for duration of this clean slate
test.

a. Open GNC

Select 'File' -> 'New File' (select default all the way through and save the
file as 'test' or something like that at a known location in a separate
folder. You'll want to delete the folder once test is over)

b. Define the 'Berkshire Hathaway Inc Class B' security as previously
mentioned and only this one security precisely as detailed in prior email.

c. Update prices

d. Review if prices got retrieved

Few notes:

On 'Change the symbol for Berkshire to BRK.B from BRK-B', for me when the
source is set to 'Yahoo as JSON', BRK-B (one with the dash) retrieves
prices. There is likely a chance that different price sourcer might set the
symbol format differently - this is the experimentation part which is to
figure out what security works with which price source as mentioned earlier
in the thread. If you want an alternate that does not have a complication of
different classes of security then try the below simpler one:

Security Information:

Full Name: BANK OF NEW YORK MELLON CORP COM

Symbol/abbreviation: BK

Display symbol: BK

Namespace: NYSE

ISIN, CUSIP or other code:

Fraction traded 1/:1000

Quote Source Information:

--tick 'Get Online Quotes'

Type of quote source:

--click 'Single' and field next to it needs to read 'Yahoo
as JSON' (scroll down the drop down by clicking the arrow on the right side
and then select it from the list. )

 Timezone: Use local time

Prices pull for 'BRK-B' via 'Yahoo as JSON' source was working for me as of
this writing but your mileage may very if Yahoo is in middle of shutdown of
v6 spigot (David H mentioned this).

Unfortunately, that's beyond my expertise.

Probably we need a separate thread for this issue.

[GNC] Third Party Transactions & More

2023-05-24 Thread Lex Medeiros
Dear Group:

I am a beginner with GnuCash. Could someone share with me how to record
these transactions using Gnucash?

1 - One of our clients has a company that has revolving funds from
clients. We use this fund to pay for client's expenses. For example, we
have a revolving fund of $1,000USD. Then, client asks us to pay her energy
bill, house cleaning, and other services.

2- Sometimes we make one time payments on behalf of clients without a
fund. For example, a clients asks us to hire a chef and pay this chef for
the services client receives. Sometimes we pay with our credit card and
then we simply pay the credit card when a client pays us for the service we
paid.

I appreciate your guidance as how to record the above instances in GnuCash.

Thank you,

Re: [GNC] Third Party Transactions & More

2023-05-24 Thread R Losey
Hello, and welcome.

Entering the data is easy, but setting up accounts (and stuff) is more of
an accounting question than a GnuCash question.

I am not an accountant.

#1 below sounds like a checking account; however, a normal checking account
is an asset, and I'm not sure that the account for #1 should be an asset.
However it is set up, as you pay things, it would decrease the amount in
the account and increase the expense - whether you can just have Client001
for all expenses, or whether you need to have Client001's expenses further
categorized is not really a GnuCash option (you CAN do it, but do you need
to?); it's an accounting question.

Regarding #2, recording the transactions isn't hard -- I think you really
want to know about how it should be set up for reports or tracking or other
things you need. But as to entry: you would enter a transaction against
your credit card & the client for the expense. When the client pays you
increase the account that is holding their payment & adjust the client's
account. Then you'd pay the credit card by decreasing the account that
received the payment and allocating the payment to the credit card.

The layout you use really depends on multiple things: possibly legal
requirements, tax needs, the kind of reporting you must do, the reports you
want to look at, and possibly other things. (After all, the simplest filing
system is one HUGE "Miscellaneous" file folder, but that doesn't meet most
people's needs.)

Re: [GNC] Third Party Transactions & More

2023-05-24 Thread David Cousens
Lex

One way to track the first item is to setup your checking account with sub-
accounts for the clients who pay you funds in advance and debit the sub-account
for a given client when you receive the funds from the client and credit an
income account as normal. When you pay the clients expenses credit the
appropriate checking account sub account and debit the Expense account. It
makes reconciling the checking account a bit more difficult bu the GnuCash
reconciliation routine can include transactions from sub-accounts.

The second situation is a classical accounts receivable situation. You are
extending credit to the client until they pay their bill Read the help manual re
the business features to get started.
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-help/chapter_busnss.html

You can issue invoices to the client detailing the services. creating the
invoice will credit an income account (selectable) and debit the Accounts
Receivable account. When you receive the clients payment the Accounts Receivable
account is credited for the amount of the payment and your checking account is
debited for the same amount. In this case there is no need to use a clients sub-
account as the record is in the invoice and payments and you have no unused
client funds in your checking account.

It would be advisable to get professional advice relevant to the taxation and
business legislation you operate under. The above is a basic generic treatment
and may not necessarily meet your needs.

Re: [GNC] IRC Invite

Mark,

When you follow the instructions in the link
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/IRC

the key points are to select the right network (irc.gimp.net) and to
register your nick with the nickserver in order to get a voice in the
channel.

Good luck!

Re: [GNC] Yahoo v6 and Gnucash 5.1 Online Quotes Changed again and not working

2023-05-24 Thread Bruce Schuck
Starting sometime this afternoon failures of the
"https://query2.finance.yahoo.com/v6/finance/quote?..."; API/URL have
been failing consistently.

There is already an F::Q issue opened,
https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/issues/282. No need to
add "me too" messages to the comments.

Using one of the alternate Yahoo URLs such as
"https://query2.finance.yahoo.com/v11/finance/quoteSummary/..."; will be
a bit more involved than a simple one-character fix. Concern is that
Yahoo blocks access to that URL after doing the work. Possible changing
to a web scrape of the "https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/..."; is another
possible solution, but again not a quick fix.

I may not have a lot of time in the next few weeks, so volunteers are
more than welcome to rewrite the module (also note there is a now a
CurrencyRates/YahooJSON.pm module that was able to get exchange rates)
and submit a pull request.

Related to this, there is also a general discussion about exploring
other F::Q quote sources at
https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/discussions/274.

Thank you.
