[GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread Phyllis Bruce
Imported and matched all the years transactions for a credit card. Then
hit the reconcile button. Crash!
On trying to get back in I received a message that talked about
bounceback? I'm sorry, I didn't write it down, but when I tried to reopen
it said that someone else might be using the file and the path to DROPBOX
was shown. I possibly made a mistake in choosing to open anyway - because
4 hours of work have apparently disappeared.

Dropbox has a log file timestamp is 10:51 (the log also exists on my local
drive). That is about the time of the crash. Could it possibly be of help
in restoring all my work or do I need to do it over again?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: [GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread Phyllis Bruce
I wish! The last backup file was at 8:37 this morning as I was wrestling
with getting the QFX file imported. Even that has vanished. That's why I
wondered about log files.

Can you tell me what bounceback is? Is having the files both on my pc and
in dropbox a problem? It appears it might be.

Re: [GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Someone else can help with the logfile, and it *should* replay your
steps, but I'd offer two suggestions for a different workflow:

1. copy the file locally first, then open it. (other users of DropBox
may have additional/alternative practices to help with sync issues)

2. Import, match & reconcile one month at a time then save. Doing this
in smaller batches has two advantages: the matcher is trained as you go,
this means less editing work on your part, and more accurate match
guesses on GnuCash's part; the incremental saves mean should a crash
happen, you lose less work.

Another option is to switch to the SQLite backend rather than the
default XML. Of course, XML should work, but SQLite does instant saves,
so if there is a crash, your at most likely to lose the last
edit/import, etc. (and so doing things in smaller batches also means
less lost work, without even having to remember to save.)

Adrien

Check the last backup in that same folder. The filename will have the date
attached to it (ex. MyBook.gnucash.20220719044041.gnucash) . It's probably
before you started entering data but it's worth checking.

Hopefully someone that knows about the bounceback can chime in and explain
what that means.

As for the file sync what I have heard is if you are working from a local
file that gets synced there isn't an issue but if you are working directly
from a file in the cloud there can be issues.

Re: [GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread Phyllis Bruce
Thank you Adrien, and Glenn

I'd much prefer to keep the file local. I just discovered I can choose to
NOT sync a folder to dropbox so I carefully navigated to the GnuCash folder
on my PC and made that change. I will re-import by month henceforth. I've
already done the hard work of figuring where stuff goes so it should be
easier this time. I'll also decrease the autosave interval.

Once I have a good file, do I need to keep the log files? They pile up in
a double quick hurry.

Hi,

What I do is in Preferences > General you can also set 'Retain log/backup
files' and you'll have an automatic log/backup rotation where it will
delete the old for you. GnuCash will always keep the last backup even if
the days have passed what you specify.

[GNC] : What is the intended effect of hiding an account ?

2022-07-22 Thread davidvernonlong
Normally I would always wish, even for hidden accounts, that any balance
would be included in the totals, otherwise my balance sheet would not add up
and assets would not equal equity plus liabilities. If I did not want the
balance to be reflected in totals, I would clear it off with an accounting
entry which complies with normal accounting double entry principles and has
a debit and a credit. I would not expect the user's manual to state that
balances in hidden accounts still effect totals, as it would go without
saying in any accounting system. To do otherwise would be a bug, unless it
were an option.
But its hard to be definitive without knowing the purposes of wishing
balances in hidden accounts not to be reflected in totals, as others have
said.

John,
Thanks for the pointer on how to get a stack trace. I will see whether I
can find anything useful.

Either way, I will try the Sqlite3 backend eventually. I do have File
History turned on and I actually did use it to recover a file once. I'll
have to learn more about how to recover from potentially catastrophic user
mistakes before I try the database (e.g. increase frequency of File History
saves). Some years ago before the CSV importer allowed saving of
configurations, I imported a large number of transactions but forgot to
change the date format from the default to the U.S. format. The dates of
the imported transactions were sprayed all over the timeline. Fortunately,
I had done a save before that and quit Gnucash without saving the erroneous
data.

You probably should hang onto the log files, until you have BOTH a good file
and a good backup of that file. You might want to keep some recent set of log
files, just in case something happens.

Re: [GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
It's too bad that the responses to "Gnucash has crashed and I lost X hours of
work" are:

1. Save more often.
2. Don't use a cloud service except as an offline backup.
3. Use the db backend (which is basically a technological alternative to #1).

I'd much prefer to keep the file local. I just discovered I can choose to
NOT sync a folder to dropbox so I carefully navigated to the GnuCash folder

already done the hard work of figuring where stuff goes so it should be

Once I have a good file, do I need to keep the log files? They pile up in
a double quick hurry.

Re: [GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread Adrien Monteleone
A crash doesn't always mean GnuCash is at fault. Sure, it may encounter
a condition that should be handled much more gracefully, but there are
potentially many, many, many variables out there that influence that
condition.

Part of triaging a crash (without a log, crash report, stack trace,
tracefile, etc.) is to eliminate variables. Doing hours and hours of
work without saving that work periodically is a bad idea no matter which
application you are using. (this has been a 'thing' with computers since
I started using them back in the early 80s, and I'm *sure* for all of
computer history.)

That sort of workflow is playing with fire. And yes, I forget and do it
sometimes too in some apps when I get carried away with a task. Murphy
and his Law usually sting me when I stray from best practices.

Since the OP mentioned using DropBox, the first inclination is to not do
that and go back to a local file. (that is what GnuCash is *designed*
for, it is not designed for working over a network/file-sync, though
some have managed it just fine.)

The tips offered in this thread are helpful for both issues. (lost work,
not syncing properly)

If the OP really wants to tackle trying to figure out exactly why
GnuCash crashed, many here are happy to help on that journey, but not
everyone is so inclined, or has the skills or time. Some people just
want to try to recover their work, get back up and running again, and
proceed without losing work from then on.

Adrien

[GNC] Setting up Mortgage; xfer to escrow is rounded off

2022-07-22 Thread
I am setting up a new file, my first in GnuCash. I have a decent
understanding of how these programs work and I'm figuring out the ins
and outs of GnuCash fine so far.

I've used the assistant to create the scheduled transaction, proper P &
I for the month I'm starting the file. I can make the transfer to escrow
split show up, with the amount I entered into the assistant 131.20. When
the transaction is complete, it shows up in the register as 131.00. I
found the editor and when I change that line to 131.20 I get the message
that assistant can't auto (balance or reconcile?) but I click through. I
then ignore all the transactions from loan origination to the present
month and the transaction entered isn't correct. When I restart GC, the
transaction is entered with the $0.20 going into the unbalanced account.

Advice please?

Re: [GNC] Lost 4 hours of data input

2022-07-22 Thread David Carlson
The auto save interval might default to 5 minutes but for me it is one of
the first mandatory changes to make when setting up a new file to set it
to a half hour or longer because I won't turn it off altogether.

Re: [GNC] Setting up Mortgage; xfer to escrow is rounded off

2022-07-22 Thread Geoff

Hi Steve

A screenshot of the scheduled transaction would be helpful:
Actions / Scheduled Transactions / Scheduled Transaction Editor
Double click the transaction to open the Editor
Click on the Template Transaction tab.

Please attach, not embed or paste.

Wonder if the OP changed it to something longer? Or if we have a bug

Re: [GNC] Setting up Mortgage; xfer to escrow is rounded off

2022-07-22 Thread David Carlson
That warning in the scheduled transaction editor is in effect telling you
to also change the total payment amount or whichever split line is
appropriate by that same amount to avoid the imbalance when the real
monthly transaction is created.

A year from now you will be revisiting that anyway when the lender changes
the escrow amount.

Go to "Help", Tutorial and Concepts guide and type in log file. It gives you a
detailed explanation of how to restore your data file by opening the last save
file and using the log file to update any changes.
