[GNC] Account Edit

2022-03-28 Thread Jack Dill
I have been a user of Gnucash for years. As you might expect over the years I
have added many accounts. Recently I did some account editing to hide accounts
that I no longer use.

When entering a transaction those accounts that I hid continue to show in the
account drop-down list. What do I need to do to hide those accounts so my
accounts for selection becomes more manageable?

Many thanks for you help.

[GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread John W. O'Brien via gnucash-user

Good morning all,

Congratulations on the new release.

I am unable to run the new 4.10 on my MacBook Air (M1, 2020) with Big
Sur (11.6.5). 4.9 has been running fine, as recently as this morning.

The essence of the crash log is:

Termination Reason:DYLD, [0x3] Wrong version

Application Specific Information:
dyld: launch, loading dependent libraries

Dyld Error Message:
  Library not loaded:
@executable_path/../Resources/lib/libcairo-gobject.2.dylib
  Referenced from:
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libgtkmacintegration-gtk3.4.dylib
  Reason: Incompatible library version:
libgtkmacintegration-gtk3.4.dylib requires version 11603.0.0 or later,
but libcairo-gobject.2.dylib provides version 2.0.0

Full log is available on request.

What else could I do to diagnose and resolve this?

[GNC] Customizing invoices

2022-03-28 Thread Helmut Eller
Is there some way to customize the number of decimal places that are
used for the Quantity column in an invoice?

When I edit an invoice and insert 1/7 as quantity, it is displayed as
0.14285714. However, when I print the invoice, it is displayed as 0.14.
Preferably I would like to see 1/7 in the printed version; 3 or 4
decimal places, i.e. 0.1429, would also be acceptable. Just two decimal
seems very little.

[GNC] 4.10 crashes for me on Mojave

I downloaded and installed 4.10 from the Sourceforge dmg. I am running

went back to 4.9 which runs fine. I can provide more info if it is wanted.

Re: [GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread john
This has been reported as https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=798489

He's using Gnucash.app Sourceforge or Github, note the
/Applications/Gnucash.app.. paths. He just happens to also have MacPorts
installed.

@executable_path is a Mac linker feature that creates paths relative to the
running executable, in this case
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash. .. means to back up one
level, so @executable_path/../Resources//lib/libcairo-gobject.2.dylib tells the
linker to look at
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libcairo-gobject.2.dylib. It's
not linking the MacPorts version of libcairo-gobject.2.dylib.

The error message is quite clear: "Incompatible library version:
libgtkmacintegration-gtk3.4.dylib requires version 11603.0.0 or later, but
libcairo-gobject.2.dylib provides version 2.0.0" and your otool checks bear
that out: (compatibility version 2.0.0, current version 2.0.0) vs.
(compatibility version 11603.0.0, current version 11603.0.0). The linker would
be happy if it was able to find the MacPorts libcairo-gobject, because
((compatibility version 11707.0.0, current version 11707.0.0): 11707 > 11603,
but 2 isn't.

It's strange that it works on Monterey, not that it fails on BigSur (and
earlier, as the bug reporter is using Catalina and another poster here is using
Mojave).

Regards,
John Ralls

2022-03-28 Thread David H
John,

FYI it doesn't work for me on Monterey on an Intel based MacBook Pro. It
opens at least but when adding a new txn as soon as I type a single letter
in the description Gnucash just disappears entirely :-( On Big Sur it
doesn't open just displays the error message reported by others.

Cheers David H.

Re: [GNC] How To Account For Mortgages With Redraw Amounts?

2022-03-28 Thread arthur brogard via gnucash-user

That's brilliant, David.  Thank you.

I'll get to it, see how I go.  Main  hassle might be undoing what I've already
done.
Perhaps we can make copies of a set of books and play with the copy until
satisfied?

Re: [GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread William Prescott
Curious. Before I had just verified that it opened without doing any work. But
now I have Gnucash open and have added a transaction and saved without a
problem.

Gnucash
Version: 4.10
Build ID: 4.10+(2022-03-26)

MacOS
Monterey
12.3

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021)
Chip Apple M1 Max
Memory 64 GB

just displays the error message reported by others.

@executable_path is a Mac linker feature that creates paths relative to the
running executable, in this case
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash. .. means to back up one
level, so @executable_path/../Resources//lib/libcairo-gobject.2.dylib tells the
linker to look at
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libcairo-gobject.2.dylib. It's
not linking the MacPorts version of libcairo-gobject.2.dylib.

The error message is quite clear: "Incompatible library version:
libgtkmacintegration-gtk3.4.dylib requires version 11603.0.0 or later, but
libcairo-gobject.2.dylib provides version 2.0.0" and your otool checks bear
that out: (compatibility version 2.0.0, current version 2.0.0) vs.
(compatibility version 11603.0.0, current version 11603.0.0). The linker would
be happy if it was able to find the MacPorts libcairo-gobject, because
((compatibility version 11707.0.0, current version 11707.0.0): 11707 > 11603,
but 2 isn't.

It's strange that it works on Monterey, not that it fails on BigSur (and
earlier, as the bug reporter is using Catalina and another poster here is using
Mojave).

One additional note, I doubt this is relevant, but for what it is worth. I
don't run Gnucash from the Applications folder directly. I have it in a
subfolder.

/Applications/Gnucash/Gnucash-4.10-1/Gnucash.app

I have separate folders for many versions going back to 2.6.1-1

Re: [GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread Robert Kesterson
I get the same behavior — it works fine as long as I don’t type anything in
transfer column (which would search for and suggest a value to fill the field).
If I type in that field, it crashes immediately. If I use the drop down menu,
I can choose the account that way and it works fine. It’s just the typing
feature that kills it.

MacOS Monterey, Intel CPU.

Re: [GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread David H
Sorry NOT the Description column, it's actually typing in the Transfer
column that causes the issue. I can select an account by using the drop
down and scrolling down and manually selecting an entry and this allows me
to add a new txn. It's starting to type something in the Transfer account
column which usually triggers the matching to existing accounts. When this
happens Gnucash just drops out and disappears.

Cheers David H.

I can confirm. Running 4.10 off the GitHub .dmg on Monterey 12.3, MacBook Air

As soon as I start entering text in the description field of a transaction, the

Re: [GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread John Ralls
David,

that's https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=798490. It turned out to be a
change in Glib to stop using an internal build of libprce (Perl-compatible
regular expressions) and when I added the external one as a dependency I didn't
realize that Unicode support wasn't the default.

I'll have a new dmg up in a couple of hours that will take care of both
problems.

John Ralls

[GNC] Upgrade problem

2022-03-28 Thread avigr...@juno.com
I am using Windows 10. I installed the new version of GnuCash that was
recommended below. Now, when I try to open GnuCash, it can not find my files.
I get a box that opens that is titled Unsaved Book - GnuCash. Please tell me
what I need to do to be able to access my data again.

Please don't start a new thread by replying to an existing one, especially not
a digest. When you *do* reply to a digest, please change the subject to match
the message that you're replying to and trim the quote to only that message.

As for your question, see

Absolutely -- gnucash will let you have any number of books, and one of
the things I would advise is having one set "test". I would especially
advise this if new to double entry bookkeeping as well as new to
gnucash. That gives you a place to experiment with features and
procedures without endangering your "production" data.

Back to your original question, how to enter an existing periodic loan
(especially one like a mortgage which perhaps has an associated escrow
account). hat do you have as data? You probably want to begin with a
statement from the lender showing you what the balances are at some
point in time.

If instead of using the "opening balance" feature you created the
accounts with zero balance you would enter this information with a
"starting transaction" (and being a transaction you could include
descriptive information like "from statement xx/xx/"

Re: [GNC] Upgrade problem

2022-03-28 Thread David Carlson
While Windows is not the only OS that suddenly develops amnesia regarding
identification of USB memory keys, it is often a prime suspect. The
recovery method is to use your file manager to locate the correct USB
device, find the correct folder within, then right click or double click
the correct filename. As long as the OS knows (or remembers) that GnuCash
is the default program to work with those files your Gnucash will update
things so that it should be good again next time.

[GNC] Customizing invoices (Helmut Eller

2022-03-28 Thread David Long
I have same problem as Helmut who wants to display more than 2 decimal
places in the quantity field of an invoice. My case is if I want to charge
say 7 months of an annual subscription then my quantity is 7 12ths so 3
decimal places would be better.
My only workaround was to add it in the description.

Re: [GNC] 4.10 cannot be opened on macOS Big Sur w/Apple Silicon

2022-03-28 Thread William Prescott
Okay. I see the same behavior on M1 Max/Monterey. It crashes when I try typing
in the account drop down field of a transaction split.

If I type in that field, it crashes immediately. If I use the drop down menu,
I can choose the account that way and it works fine. It’s just the typing
feature that kills it.

[GNC] GnuCash 4.10 Documentation and All-in-one Bundles

2022-03-28 Thread John Ralls
There was a problem with building the documentation caused by a bad merge of
the updated Portuguese translation of the Tutorial and Concept Guide, resulting
in the macOS and Windows all-in-one bundles to have only the Portuguese
translation.

There were also some Gtk bugs in the macOS bundle.

Consequently we have a re-release of the documentation as 4.10.1 and updated
bundles, gnucash-4.10-1.setup.exe and Gnucash-Intel-4.10-2.dmg. The sha-256
hashes are:

Re: [GNC] [GNC-dev] GnuCash 4.10 Documentation and All-in-one Bundles

2022-03-28 Thread David H
Thanks John, working on both Monterey and Big Sur now. Sorry to be the
bearer of bad news but unfortunately now the first 7 icons no longer show
up for Save / Close / Duplicate / Delete / Enter / Cancel / Blank and the
last one for Reconcile, although the Split / Jump / Schedule / Transfer
icons are there.

Thanks also to you and the other GnuCash Developers / Translators / etc for
all the hard work you put in on Gnucash which is a great product that I use
daily and couldn't do without any more.

Thanks David H.

Re: [GNC] create desktop icons for GNC 4.9 Flatpak on Ubuntu

2022-03-28 Thread Jeff
I have tried all of this.  As per your information I did in fact find an
icon in:

/var/lib/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/x86_64/stable/active/files/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico

The desktop link gives me an error of "No suitable backend was found for
/home/jeffrey/Desktop/Dad.desktop".  I am using the XML save,
uncompressed.  I have a great distrust of compressed data files.

My .desktop file is:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Exec=flatpak run org.gnucash.GnuCash /media/jeffrey/'Mac
Drive'/Ledgers/Dad/Dad.gnucash

Name=GnuCash 4.9 FLATPAK Dad
Comment=Manage home and small business accounts
Icon=/var/lib/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/x86_64/stable/active/files/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico

And in case you are wondering 'Mac Drive' is an external USB drive that
I bought on clearance for half price, and I am not using a Mac
computer.  I just never changed the drive name because I had trouble
with the initial install of the drive several years ago, pre-Ubuntu.
Turned out that I had a bad USB cable.  It works flawlessly if I
manually click on Dad.gnucash in the file manager.

This does not appear anywhere on my server.
/home/jeffrey/.local/share/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/x86_64/stable/active/files/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico.

Permissions are set to run as executable for the desktop icon. Icon does
not show up, just the generic blank icon.  If I hit "Okay" I end up with
a new, empty, set of books.  If I manually open Dad.gnucash from the
link it opens the correct set of books but; wants to create scheduled
transactions going back to 2019. And I also simply installed GNC as a
Flatpak.  It also creates backups on the desktop.

For the life of me I cannot figure out what is going on.  I can create
desktop icons for everything except Flatpak programs.

I have to have a gremlin in my server, because I cannot even build a
working version of GNC from source (after uninstalling GNC).

As of right now I only have one user on my server.

Hi Jeff,

If you installed gnucash for a single user, then the icon file will be
at the path I showed in the previous email (but you'll have to change
the login name to yours):

/home/david/.local/share/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/x86_64/stable/active/files/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico

If you installed gnucash as a system application for all users, then
you will find the icon file here:

/var/lib/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/x86_64/stable/active/files/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico

For the exec line, you might want to put the full path to the gnucash file, e.g.

Exec=flatpak run org.gnucash.GnuCash /home/jeff/Documents/test-2.gnucash

So, with a *system* installation and assuming that your login is jeff,
then the desktop file might look like this:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Exec=flatpak run org.gnucash.GnuCash /home/jeff/Documents/test-2.gnucash
Name=GnuCash 4.9 FLATPAK test-2
Comment=Manage home and small business accounts
Icon=/var/lib/flatpak/app/org.gnucash.GnuCash/x86_64/stable/active/files/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico

(Note that the lines may be wrapped, if so, you'll need to unwrap them)

Remember to right-click on the file on the desktop and choose "Allow launching".

Hi Jeff,

The following works for me, with gnucash installed for a user:

1. Create a desktop file (using a text editor) with the entry shown below

your gnucash file

changing /home/david to /home/jeff)
5. Save the file as whatever-you-want-to-call-it.desktop
6. Go to your desktop
7. Right-click on the file on the desktop and select "Allow launching"

8. Repeat this process for other files, changing the Exec line and
