Re: [GNC] Import transactions with expenses in a different currency

2020-09-09 Thread Ove Grunnér
I had similar problems and I solved it by turning on "trading accounts" .
This way there are no exchange rates involved in individual transactions,
but instead each transaction is balanced to a currency trading account.
To correct any existing transactions I then had to click on it and accept
gnucash auto correction, I don't know if that can be done with one global
correction or not.
Either way don't turn on trading accounts before you read up on it as it is
quite fundamental and not reversabel as far as I known, and if you do decide
it is for you, at least take a backup before trying it out.

[GNC] Short cuts for things

2020-09-09 Thread Chris Green
Is there a quick way to:

Get to the 'Accounts' tab, in order to select the next account for
entering a transaction.

'Enter' a transaction - i.e. a key to hit instead of having to
click on the + sign.

[GNC] Finance quote troubleshooting

2020-09-09 Thread Andreas Vyrides

Dear Sir,

I have been having some trouble retrieving currency quotes from Perl
using Finance::Quote. I am only interested in currency exchange rates
(have not attempted using anything else). I have been going through all
steps of the wiki, such as running "Install online price Retrieval",
even changing my alpha-vantage key by requesting a new one. I have also
tried to get quotes from outside gnucash by using the terminal with the
following result

"

C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin>gnucash-cli.exe --quotes get
file://C:\Users\EoL\Documents\gnuCash\test\test.gnucash

Found Finance::Quote version 1.49.
* 14:35:49  WARN Unable to retrieve quotes for these items:
CURRENCY:USD
  CURRENCY:EUR
Continuing with good quotes.

"

In my attempts to get a single exchange rate from the terminal I get the
following results

"

C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin>perl gnc-fq-dump currency EUR GBP
1 EUR = GBP

"

I would like to ensure that I have tried using both API keys in the
appropriate "online quote" in the preferences settings, but every time I
try to get quotes I get an error with "unable to retrieve quotes for
these items: Currency: USD, Currency:EUR"

I am currently using F::Q v1.49, and gnucash v4.1

Thank you for your time and all your support

Kind Regards

DNR

[GNC] Can't input alphabet under Windows 10 (Japanese)

2020-09-09 Thread Kazuhiro Nagai

Hello.

I'm using Gnucash with Japanese enviroment under Windows 10.

From version 4.0, I can't input alphabet due to this bug.
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797860
This bug is critical for me.

MinGW-w64's GTK+ package is updated to version 3.24.23.
https://packages.msys2.org/package/mingw-w64-x86_64-gtk3?repo=mingw64
But maint branch build log shows
Gnucash is built with GTK+ version 3.24.20 that contains problem.
Of course, I tried the newest maint build and found that bug occured.

Should I build Gnucash from source?

Thanks for the help.

Re: [GNC] Is there an 'easy' way to have a transaction with 'sub-transactions' as it were?

Yes, View > Transaction Journal

Now all transactions in that register will always show all splits. It
is not only helpful when learning GnuCash, but I use it exclusively
because I don't want to have to click each transaction to see the
splits. Less clicking, more visual inspection. The layout is also, to
me, less cluttered looking, even though more info is on the screen.

The 'Auto Split' view only shows them when it is selected, but saves
you having to click to see the splits explicitly like in Basic view.

Also consider View > Double Line which will add make the Notes field
visible.

I like to use Notes for comments about the entire transaction and
Memos where info is specific just to that split line.

Just to explain to those who never learned old fashioned pen and ink on
paper bookkeeping. THIS is what the transaction would look like in the
"journal". A date ordered record of transactions. They would then be
"posted" to the ledger, where only the part affecting that account visible.

Gnucash allows you to enter transactions directly into the ledger from
any of the accounts affected by that transaction (always at least two,
this is double-entry bookkeeping). The journal is virtual. But as Adrien
indicated, gnucash will show you the transaction in that view of you ask
it to.

Yes, the term "petty cash" has traditionally had a different meaning. In
a very small business, might actually be currency but in a large one
likely its own bank account. And a subsidiary set of books. The idea was
to reduce the load on the treasurer/chief accountant and not clutter the
main books with trivial detail.

In the petty cash books would be each transaction, each box of pencils,
box of reams of paper, flowers for the boss's reception room, etc. Then
say once a month the petty cash account would be "refreshed" with the
total spent and each category of expense closed to the main books. Thus
the parent "office supplies", "postage", etc.  and not each box of
pencils or roll of stamps.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is one built-in. You might be
able to set a custom accelerator for it. (see the wiki)

However, you can use Ctrl+Alt+PgUp/PgDn to cycle through open tabs.

(I find it odd that there isn't a built-in shortcut for the Accounts
tab, or one for simply opening an account via a pop-up search from anywhere)

If you are already on the Accounts tab, you can expand/collapse sections
of the tree with +/- and navigate with the up/down arrows. Pressing
Enter will open that register.

If you keep *all* of the tree expanded, you can simply start typing the
name of an account and GnuCash will search your tree for you, highlight
the account and then you can simply press Enter to open it.

'Enter' a transaction - i.e. a key to hit instead of having to
 click on the + sign.

When you open a register, you should automatically be in a blank
transaction. (focus is on the date field)

If you were editing or focused on a previous (or future) transaction and
want to enter a new one, you can jump to the Blank Transaction via
Shift+PgDn.

There is also Preferences > Register > Actions > 'Enter' moves to blank
transaction if you like.

In my past life as an NHS GP, most of our income came from our NHS contracts,
but we received some income directly from patients for non-NHS work such as
foreign travel immunisation, certificates and employment-related examinations
(e.g. for heavy goods vehicle drivers). We recorded this in a petty-cash book
and a cheques-received book. Drawings from petty cash for sundries and
refreshments seldom exceeded the contents of the cash box, which was being
topped up by cash income with the excess being periodically paid into the bank
along with incoming cheques.

Our accountant never complained about this way of working, so I assumed it was
acceptable.

In the context of a small Rotary Club, cash income is received at community
events and there rarely a need for cash expenditure on the day. Occasionally,
though, someone has to nip out for supplies part of the way through an event,
and it’s convenient to be able to deal with that in cash on the day.

This probably won’t be an issue for Chris Green, who would be better served by
an Undeposited Funds asset account.

(I'm sure they're in the manual, but it's a while since I read it and
somehow I didn't start using those shortcuts so they dropped out of my

Another trick that I accidentally discovered is to hover in the account tab
bar then with the mouse wheel you can scroll quickly through the open
tabs.. I think down goes right and up goes left, but I have trouble
remembering that part when it is so easy to switch directions I suppose
that might change if you put your tab bar on the side anyway.

I often use ctrl+i tab,tab to get to the entry box (it would be nice if it
defaulted to that) and then start typing. This quickly limits to matching
accounts, then it is easy to tab again and hit enter to go to the account.
Written out like this it sounds like a lot of work but in practice I find
it is quick.

Not that I'm aware of, but just tab or shift-tab to the other column. A
negative credit is a positive debit and vice versa. If you try entering

Thanks David. I recalled there was some sort of account search but
couldn't remember how to bring it up. (I don't think it has a menu
entry) This does help find matching accounts, but it does require a few
extra keys to open the desired register. However, it is accessible from
anywhere (not just the Accounts tab) and you don't have to have your
account tree entirely expanded. With a little practice one can quickly
open the desired account.

(note, that would be cmd+i on a Mac, and it would be nice if the focus
were automatically in the search box and if hitting Enter after
selecting the account would just open the register rather than bringing
you to the Accounts tab)

defaulted to that) and then start typing. This quickly limits to matching
accounts, then it is easy to tab again and hit enter to go to the account.
Written out like this it sounds like a lot of work but in practice I find
it is quick.
