Use your operating system file manager to check the folder where you
normally keep your file.

What has recently changed? We can give more specific suggestions if you
tell us which version of GnuCash you have and your computer operating
system.

[GNC] Can you move a Liability Account to a "sub-account" in Liabilities?

2020-07-30 Thread Fran_3 via gnucash-user
3 items listed under Liabilities...
Liability ALiability BLiability Ceach to a different entity but related based
on certain criteria.
We want to setup another Liability account "Liabilities ABC" and then move the
3 above under it as "sub-accounts" like ...
Liabilities- Liabilities ABC-- Liability A-- Liability B-- Liability C
That way we can see the total of the 3 or each individual total...
The Question: Is there any way to do this without having to delete A, B, C, and
re-creating them under Liabilities ABC ?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Yes, of course.
Create Liabilities ABC account
then edit each of Liabilities A, .. etc and change the parent.

Do you know the name of your data file? If you don't know the name/path,
do you at least know the file extension (if it has one; most likely
.gnucash). Do you know how to use the "search for file" tool(s) of the
operating system you are using?

Once you know the name of the file, when gnucash opens with this new.
blank slate, use File => open, navigate to your data file (you know its
name/path now) and select it. NOW after you have closed down gnucash, it
will be at the top of the "most recently opened list" and you next time
should open with it.

Easy.

1.  Create the new Liability ABC using Liabilities as its parent.

2.  Edit the other three to change their parent from Liability to
Liability ABC.

What version of Gnucash? I’ve been using Gnucash on Catalina since at least
version 3.8 (5 versions ago…).
The simplest thing to try is download the current version of Gnucash (4.1) and
install that. It should work, though I always have to launch new versions twice
(for the first run) to get past the gatekeeper dialog even though I say, yes,
open it.

Re: [GNC] Can't find file

2020-07-30 Thread w...@theprescotts.com
Michael,

Thank you for your message. I didn't have the problem that Dan had. I am well
aware of where the .gnucash file is stored. But I use two different Gnucash
files and am always switching between them. I have always used the Open... menu
item, then navigated to the correct file. Until I saw your comment, I never
noticed that there was a list of recently opened files that I could use. This
will be a great convenience for me from now on.

On that topic, if I someone asked me what one change I would like to Gnucash,
my choice would be the ability to open two different files in different windows
at the same time.

Do you know the name of your data file? If you don't know the name/path, do you

I routinely run with 4 open Gnucash files.

Open up Gnucash again. It will tell you there is a lock. Choose "open a
new file" or similar. Then use the File Open REcent to find the second
file

I actually have a series of menu shortcuts that I use all the time

Thanks for that tip Liz.

However, it doesn't work on Mac OS, Linux (and apparently Windows) easily allow
running multiple copies of a program. Mac OS tries to just allow one instance.
You can start two instances of a program from the terminal. But with Gnucash,
as soon as I try to switch the second instance to a different file, the first
instance switches to that file and the second instance quits.

Re: [GNC] Bug 797787 - Preference setting to open new tabs adjacent to currently active tab

2020-07-30 Thread David H
Reading the bug report I'm not sure that there is an option, I can't find
one either in any of my preferences. You thought you'd explicitly enabled
it somehow ? To be honest I preferred the previous behaviour where the new
tab got added last but it seems 4.1 just opens it next to my COA as I
usually open tabs from the Accounts tab. I only usually have the Accounts
tab and 6 others open so they fit well on a 24" monitor.

Cheers David H.
