Greetings, and welcome!

The first place to look might be the Concepts Guide available on the
GnuCash web site.
https://www.gnucash.org/docs.phtml

You did not specify which languages you are comfortable reading, but maybe
you can have a look at the Concepts Guide in one or more of the languages
provided -- English, German, Italian, Japanese and Portuguese.

Over the years some folks have mentioned videos available on YouTube.
(Search for "GnuCash.") I have not watched many and I definitely cannot
vouch for the captions or translated captions, but you might find they
demonstrate some principles in a video format.

Please post back to the list if you have any additional questions.

Do read the Concepts Guide to become familiar with GnuCash's capabilities
and structure.

One thing to keep in mind that while GnuCash's application category is
accounting it is actually a bookkeeping tool. The 'accounting' aspect (what
accounts to have, how to book entries for specific business activities,
etc.) are location-dependent and should be addressed by a qualified
accountant. Depending on the record-keeping and taxing requirements of your
business' location a practicing account will advise you of how to meet these
requirements.

Once you're all set you'll find GnuCash a pleasure to use.

Rich

hello, guys. I am a newcomer here and want to learn how to use GnuCash. I
don't speak english well, so if I made some strange sentences please let me
know or just ignore them.

Now I want to find some GnuCash example files, which maybe include foreign
currencies, stocks, vendors, bills, invoices etc, more complicated more
better, and show me how a real complex accounting book in GnuCash would
look like. Could anyone give me some suggestions? thanks.

Also, complexity depends on the type of entity for which books are being
kept and the jurisdictions to which reporting must be done. Definitely
not "one size fits all" and why you were advised to consult an
accountant for that.

Look, once upon a time (within my lifetime) books were kept pen and ink
on paper ruled for journal and ledger. No matter how complicated the
books, that worked. Similarly, to a bit more modern, instead of on paper
could be spreadsheets with columns for journal and ledger. Software like
gnucash can keep any books that would have been kept in those ways, just
simpler to enter the data and less prone to error (autoposting: virtual
journal)

If you mean to be asking a QUESTION "if the books were very
complicated, could gnucash still handle that?" the answer is yes.

PS --- "multiple currencies" is actually another topic entirely. There
are (potential) aspects to that you will not see in examples on this
list. That is because as far as I can tell all the users HERE are using
solutions within gnucash suited to "continuous re-evaluation"
assumptions (current currency market) << as opposed to entities
operating with organizational or statutory requirements as to WHEN such
re-evaluations/rate conversions are to take place, etc. or other
restrictions on conversion>> Not that gnucash couldn't handle, but would
be doing so very differently.

[GNC] Saved Reports Disappearing

2019-10-30 Thread Fran_3 via gnucash-user
1 - I began saving recent report configurations with a dash like in order to
distinguish them from other reports...
But, some of them disappear later on when I attempt to re-open them...
Any ideas on what is going on?
2 - Where are the Saved Transaction Report Configurations saved?
3 - Is there a limit on how many Saved Transaction Report Configurations you
can have?
4 - Is there anyway to set where the Transaction Report Configurations are
saved?
5 - Can you have each "entity" save reports in different folders?
Thanks for any help.

The storage of report templates is defined here
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations. The diagrams of the
configuration locations for various GnuCash versions on different OS's a bit
down the page should help. The saved report templates are basically a list
of options for creating a report template stored in a single text file.

If you are saving reports for a specific period populated by data for that
period these AFAIK are stored in html format in a location of your choice
selected while saving the specific report.

Re: [GNC] Saved Reports Disappearing

2019-10-30 Thread D via gnucash-user
Fran,

First off, what version of Gnucash, on what OS?

No idea. An examination of the saved-reports file might help. I know that I had
some unknown corruption in my saved-reports file at one point, and numerous
reports kept disappearing. I think that one of them was causing the file to get
truncated on save, but I never did figure it out. At some point, I think I
rebuilt all my reports from scratch.

>2 - Where are the Saved Transaction Report Configurations saved?

David C. directed you to the Wiki page for this.

>3 - Is there a limit on how many Saved Transaction Report Configurations you
>can have?

I am pretty sure the answer is "no." Since this is just a text file, the
drive's the limit. How Gnucash handles a large number of reports might be an
issue, but I've never had a problem. Neither have I heard one reported in the
last 13 years on the list.I

>4 - Is there anyway to set where the Transaction Report Configurations are
>saved?

I don't believe there is, short of recompiling one in. That would require
programming as well.

>5 - Can you have each "entity" save reports in different folders?

But "entity", I assume you mean different Gnucash files. Reports are stored by
installation, so all reports will display for every file accessed by that
installation. This has been noted and discussed over the years, and bug 797124
was raised recently about it. Some workarounds are: use different logins for
different files; use naming to group your reports.I

HTH,

David T.
