I'm tracking only six funds plus some associated cash funds and some CDs, but rather than the simple account tree you and he mention with tags, I nested them deeply. "Investments" account has three children, tax-free Roth, tax-benefited IRA, and taxable. Each of those accounts is split between my wife and me, and that leads to the 20+ number that I track. That part works okay, but apparently does yield some difficulties in tracking disbursements from those two particular branches. I'll look into changing this but initially I'll spend some time learning the Report system. In that regard I did locate the Options button in the menu bar and that definitely helps my learning process. The Tutorial and Concepts Guide was more useful to me as a beginner than the Help Guide. I have some questions about that but I'll ask those in a separate question. Thanks. We can call this question complete. ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user If you are using Nabble or Gmane, please see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists for more information. - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. I found the "GnuCash format" import to be very useful for some routine transactions in which only the date changes - pay splits with standard deductions and similar things. It's allowed me to import my accounts further back much more quickly than doing it manually. Thanks. I didn't want posterity to see a negative comment record of this useful tool. [GNC] Outstanding Check Problem
This is more of an accounting question than a GnuCash question; what I would like to know is how to handle this within GnuCash. I’m sure that this situation isn’t unique, and there is probably a standard way of handling it in accounting. I am maintaining the checkbook for a club account. Several months ago I wrote a check to a member. He deposited the check, and the institution where he deposited the check collected the money. But because of some mistake within the banking system (not my mistake, not his mistake), the money came from somewhere other than the account from which the check was issued–the one I am using GnuCash to keep records for. (If it was charged to another account at the issuing bank, the account holder hasn’t noticed the discrepancy.) That means that my records differ from the bank’s records by the amount of the check; everything else has cleared. Unless by some miracle the banking system straightens this out, my records will differ from the bank’s records forever. Is there a clean way to handle this, other than simply deleting that check from my (GnuCash) records and pretending it never existed? ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user If you are using Nabble or Gmane, please see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists for more information. - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Is there a clean way to handle this, other than simply deleting that > check from my (GnuCash) records and pretending it never existed? My accountant wife (not a cpa -- no legal or professional accounting advice offered) said she would contact the issuing bank to see how long they would accept a correction on this particular check should the banking system figure out the mistake. She would still hold the outstanding check open for up to a year. I think you have a moral obligation to get advice from your bank. They are the ones who would have to accept/reject the check after 6 months or so. Perhaps the bank for your member could trace from whence they obtained the funds. Now, if the banks are not interested in resolving this ... If after a year you still don't have closure, then you should enter a transaction reversing the check. Keep both the original check and the reversal in your records with notes that it never cleared the bank but the recipient did receive payment and therefore does not get a replacement check. --Steve -- Stephen M Butler, PMP, PSM stephen.m.butle...@gmail.com kg...@arrl.net 253-350-0166 --- GnuPG Fingerprint: 8A25 9726 D439 758D D846 E5D4 282A 5477 0385 81D8 ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user If you are using Nabble or Gmane, please see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists for more information. - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. I thought I was the only one. I write a check to an educational organization. They send me a receipt indicating that they received the check. Quarterly they send me a benefit publication. But it never clears my bank. I live in the USA and the organization is in London, England. I thought this might be a problem with the SWIFT organization. It has happened several more times with them. I wrote them a letter about it once, but since they have received the money, they do not care. This has happened with a USA educational organization once or twice as well. I now contribute with my credit card, and have had no problems with it. Moral: do not trust the banking system. -- .~. I???m sure that this situation isn???t unique, and there is probably a standard way o I have had this happen too, sort of. The check got back to our bank for a different (MUCH smaller) amount than written. Checked in with the banks at either end. Interestingly, in this case the error was "in between*" and the banks at both ends (ours and the bank where the check was deposited << and duly credited to the payee's account for the correct amount >>) had what matched THEIR records. We were told not to worry as any later correction would be inter-institution, would not affect our account. So I created an offsetting transaction to correct the amount (as if the bank "donated" the amount) We have also had bank errors from misreading checks. The organizational books have an account for bank error. These can take a long time to get straightened out. ROFLOL once it took many months, because the bank manager decided there was no POLICY for "small bank errors in a non-profit's account" and sent it to the bank's board for next quarterly meeting << set policy correct error that was in organization's error , or consider it a donation to the 501(c)3 >> Michael D Novack * In other words, not returning directly from bank where deposited to bank where written but with other institutions in between.
