[GNC] Crash when saving mysql to xml

2018-08-29 Thread Uli Hansen

Hallo,

for some years I had my gnucash-data on a mysql database. Now I want to
move back to xml for different reasons.

When saving to xml, gnc is crashing.

Searching the mailing list was not successful.

Unfotunately I'm not a Linux or  C expert but I tried to collect some
information

OS: Linux version 4.13.0-39-generic (buildd@lcy01-amd64-024) (gcc
version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9))

You're welcome :)

Although credits go at least in part to Bob Fewell as well. My import work was
limited to importing transactions. It was Bob that added the import of
prices, based on my work.

2018-08-29 Thread Deva -
Thanks Geert.

But please note this was not an issue for me; I was just trying to help another
poster with his problems (cc’d on this mail).

Bob can rest easy because the OP said he finally solved it. Something to do
with the way he exported his price data from a spreadsheet to CSV was the
problem. Once he fixed that, everything worked ok. He posted his solution on
this list as well.

Thanks for the follow up.

Cheers.

Re: [GNC] GC 3.2 Import Price File CSV

2018-08-29 Thread D via gnucash-user
I should mention that this thread alerted me to the problems that Excel csv
files can cause with the importer. My own attempts to import price data also
failed, as I was using Excel as a source. I attempted to use different
encoding, as this person did, but none of the many format choices solved it for
me. My solution was to remove Excel from the process altogether.

It seems to me that there is need to determine precisely what needs to change
for the importer to work with Excel.

[For the record, I could never get the importer to process the EOL characters
in the Excel csv file. I'm on a Mac, and I know that EOL characters can vary by
OS. I tried replacing the newline character with CRLF, but that didn't work.
Nor did any other changes, and so I gave up. Regardless, suffice to say that
importing from an Excel-generated csv file didn't work on my Mac.]I

[GNC] Balance Sheet Report Broken

2018-08-29 Thread Paul Schwartz
I have been using gnucash for many years. I keep my books with the assets
valued at their purchase price. The cost basis is important when selling
assets. This is easy for most stocks but some require periodic adjustments
because of return-of-capital [or similar] events. I have been working with
version 2.6.12 most recently, and the balance sheets reported correct cost
basis values for all of my stocks. When I upgraded my Ubuntu systems
recently, version 2.6.19 was installed. I now find that neither Balance
Sheet report is working. The standard reports zero value for the stock if a
return of capital adjustment was made while the eguile version just ignores
the adjustment and reports the original purchase value.

I would greatly appreciate some help in figuring out how to migrate to
later versions of gnucash.

Re: [GNC] GC 3.2 Import Price File CSV

2018-08-29 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I don’t use the importer but this sounds like a good candidate for the FAQ or
somewhere else appropriate on the wiki, if those of you who are more familiar
with the process have the time.

If it’s simply a case of ‘import directly, don’t open it in Excel first’ I can
certainly add that in myself.

Re: [GNC] Balance Sheet Report Broken

2018-08-29 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Paul,

I’m not certain about your specific issue with the balance sheet. I do know
there has been some recent discussion on the general topic of equity figures
with relation to stocks. (mostly concerning unrealized gains/losses) There is
an entirely new version of the balance sheet report being worked on hopefully
for 3.3 or 3.4. I’m not sure if it addresses your issue. I’ll let others chime
in, and you may need to file a bug report so it can be addressed in time for
those releases.
--

As for the new version question:

There is a flatpak version of 3.2 out there, but some people have noticed some
issues. (notably, storing files on external/network drives which has a
workaround, and MySQL access which is broken)

Otherwise, it is fairly easy to build GnuCash yourself on Ubuntu. The
instructions on the Wiki have been updated recently and should be pretty
straightforward. (I successfully built 3.2 on Xenial about a month ago) The
process is to install the build tools, install certain dependencies, download
the source, make, build.

The places where people get tripped up the most (based on threads here on the
list) is “where to install GnuCash to”, (/usr/local, /opt, or $HOME/.local are
easiest) and making sure to follow the very strong suggestion to use a build
directory that is *not* the source directory. (a child or sibling directory is
fine)

Here’s the wiki page for building: https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building#Ubuntu

Read the General Instructions section there. Then, do not follow the *old*
specific instructions for Ubuntu there, but instead on this new page:
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/BuildUbuntu16.04

*note, one of the steps on the second page is to setup GoogleTest as part of
your build environment. That GoogleTest page is a tad confusing. The ’nutshell’
is you probably want to follow the first code block only.

Feel free to ask for assistance or clarification on the list here if you hit a
stumbling block.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] GC 3.2 Import Price File CSV

2018-08-29 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Geert,

I have filed Bug 796833 with both a short csv file from my copy of Excel, and a
screenshot of the importer result.

Cheers,
David

Don’t jump too fast, that’s https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775368
, or rather it’s a side effect
of my misunderstanding the problem and making a bad fix. The old average cost
behavior will be restored in GnuCash 3.3.

GnuCash 2.6 is no longer maintained and the date-time code is completely
different in GnuCash 3 so there won’t be any fix, but since Debian/Ubuntu
doesn’t yet support GnuCash 3 your best bet is to find a workaround.

The problem is likely that you have what MySQL regards as an invalid date in
some record and that that caused a failure to create a date pointer. A bit more
of the backtrace from gdb showing where that call came from would help identify
what the defective object’s type is and confirm the hypothesis that there’s a
bad record in the database. Since you have INFO messages in your Tracefile I
suppose that you already ran gnucash --debug. You can get more detail still
(though unfortunately not a lot more, there aren’t a lot of DEBUG statements in
the XML backend) with
gnucash --log gnc.backend.xml=debug that might provide some specifics
indicating what object caused the crash.

Re: [GNC] No Disk error

2018-08-29 Thread Arthur
As Colin suggested, I Googled the error message. [Silly of me not to
look beyond the gnucash archives.]  I've summarized the 3 suggested
solutions which I tried, and I also have a thought for consideration by
the developers.

First, I have a Dell XPS from 2010 that came with *4* memory card reader
slots that I have never used (before today). It is running Windows 7.
For every GnuCash 3.x (including a couple of recent 3.2 maintenance
releases) I see the following.
If I select "Import transactions from CSV...", I have to cancel 24 no
disk pop-up windows (6 for each slot) to continue.  This happens every
time I try to import transactions. I don't want to be a whiner, but it
quickly becomes annoying.

Here's what I tried that worked.
1) Keep media in the drives.  I scrounged through a box of old stuff and
found a compact flash card.  Inserting that into the reader eliminated
the error for that slot.  Woo-Hoo.  Only 18 pop-ups to cancel.  I
presume if I fill all the slots, the errors will disappear entirely.

2) Disable each drive that causes a problem.  I opened the Device
Manager in the control panel. The item "Disk drives" lists all the
drives on the machine including those for the memory cards. Disabling a
drive eliminates the error for that drive.  If I disable every memory
card drive, all the pop-ups are eliminated.

3) Hack the registry.  Go to the registry entry
"Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows"
The default value of of the DWORD "ErrorMode" is "0".  Change
"ErrorMode" to "2".  Pop-ups gone. The following link gives more explanation

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/124873/disabling-system-hard-error-message-dialog-boxes
I pasted the following advice from that page.
"To run an unattended server, use mode 2. The default value is 0."
The implication being one will have to make a visit to the previously
unattended server to click on the pop-ups in the event of an error since
the server will hang until they are cleared.

Here's my humble thought for consideration by the developers.  If I'm
reading the documentation correctly (a big if), the state of ErrorMode
can be controlled programmatically on a per process basis via the
Windows API.  I think it might solve the problem if sometime shortly
after Gnucash starts, it calls "SetErrorMode(SEM_NOGPFAULTERRORBOX)".
Below is a link to the description of the Windows function SetErrorMode().

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms680621(v=vs.85).aspx
Assuming it works, perhaps you would consider adding that to the Windows
port?

Were either of you at any time storing your GnuCash files on an SD card?

If so, I’d suggest using a card to load the file, then doing a Save As
elsewhere (with the card still in the drive). Then close and re-open GnuCash to
load from the new location. THEN Safely Eject and remove the SD card.

Otherwise, some sort of bug is at play.

I haven't looked into a work around yet, but I agree its highly annoying.

I figure I'll need to uninstall my SD card readers in order to stop the alerts.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Subject: [GNC] No Disk error

Dear all I want to report a problem already submitted in this mailing list
with no answer so far:

Hi!

I am starting over with gnucash, and thought I'd do a clean re-install.
Note, I am on windows, and have removed all the gnucash files I could
find before installing 3.1.

However, now I am getting an annoying error message every time I try to
look at the preferences, as well as when I do "save as":

Gnucash.exe - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive
\Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

I have the options Cancel, Try Again and Continue. Try Again just pops
up the message again, so do the other two too. However, if I click
enough times on Cancel or Continue, the message goes away.

Note, when I change something in Preferences, that change stays when I
quit and restart.

This is quite annoying, and if anybody could shed some light on what has
happened and how to get rid of said message, I'd be very happy.

Karin

your help will great.

Thanks
