So dconf-service is not running.

That is a pity, I had hoped for a useful error message

That shows the permissions on the folder are ok.

It seems there is something basically wrong with your system, the
question is what? How did you install Debian?

Also post the contents of the file .xsession-errors after running
dconf-editor and attempting to save changes.

When you run dconf-editor in a terminal and attempt to save something
is there anything shown in the terminal?

Well, kind of. But what's not going to help much is the fact that I wrote
price downloaders in Python for the providers I use (Morningstar, Vanguard
Australia, etc.), and store the prices in a separate database in order not
to pollute the GC database with extra data.
There was an initiative to create an offshoot of Finance::Quote in Python
but that got stalled at the beginning of the warm season in Europe. :)

Re: [GNC] GC 3.2 Import Price File CSV

2018-08-21 Thread Megagrumpy
I have checked the CSV file and there are no spaces. I tried initially to
import a number of shares and none or them were recognised by the import
tool. It must be a fault in my security definitions I think. When F::Q was
working it would import the prices from Alphavantage so it was happy with
the security definition but maybe the CSV import tool is looking for a
specific structure in the database. I have defined all my shares in a
subcategory "LSE" and I cannot remember if this was a Gnucash structure or
one I made myself. See Screen shot:

Thank you for your answer. Ideally, I would be able to contribute a module to
finance::quote but I lack the perl knowledge (and brain power :-) to write it,
however I do have time and will to test stuff.

Can you please let me know how to check out your python code?

Now we are getting somwhere dbus isn't running

I should have asked for this output earlier, again it confirms dbus is
not running

> ...
> (dconf-editor:2412): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to
> dconf: Failed to execute child process "dbus-launch" (No such file or

And that confirms it can't save the changes because there is a problem
with dbus.
I suspect that may means that dbus-x11 is not installed. Run

sudo apt-get install dbus-x11

If it is already installed it will tell you. Otherwise try
dconf-editor again and see if you get the error on startup. If you
don't get the error I suspect all will now be working and you should
be able to save settings in the editor as well as in gnucash and in a
number of other apps that use dconf. If you do still get it then
reboot and try again (it might be necessary to reboot to get dbus
working, not sure).

Re: [GNC] Gnucash 3 in the Debian / Ubuntu pipeline?

2018-08-21 Thread GWB
I'm not sure how the version history works in Ubuntu or Debian, but I
installed GnuCash 2.6.7 from getdeb.org quite a while ago, and
"pinned" it (so that apt-get upgrade would not go to the version up)
to that version hoping that gnucash in Ubuntu 14 would catch up with
2.6.7. Ubuntu 14 ("Trusty Tahr") still only has 2.6.1, but 18.04
("Bionic Beaver" really? who comes up with these names?) has indeed
included 2.16.19, as John recalled. 18.04 is my next upgrade.

Every time I run "apt-get update" I am reminded that getdeb.org is
gone, and has been for some time. Did getdeb.org have gnucash 3.0 at
some point before it went dark?

I don't see either the Ubuntu or Debian package maintainers (perhaps
the same person or team in this case) moving too quickly to upgrade
gnucash in their package repos. But maybe I'm wrong, which would be
nice. But if you do find a repository with 3.x.x, I would pin it (or
"version lock") to a lower version in order not to get too far ahead
of the main repos for your linux distribution.

Alas, 18.10 ("Cosmic Cuttlefish") lists:

gnucash (1:2.6.19-1)
[universe]personal and small-business financial-accounting software

at https://packages.ubuntu.com/cosmic/gnome/

Perhaps 19 ("Vomiting Vole") will have gnucash 3. Until then, check
for other repos, look in unstable and testing to see if some
adventurous soul decided to be creative, and unless you absolutely
need some feature in the latest release, pin your version and don't
get too far ahead of the main repo for your distribution.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash 3 in the Debian / Ubuntu pipeline?

2018-08-21 Thread GWB
As Bert pointed out, if you can use Debian unstable, the version is 3.2:

<<
Source Package: gnucash (1:3.2-1)
>>

from https://packages.debian.org/source/unstable/gnucash

Ironically, I usually find Debian unstable to be, in fact, more stable
than the "stable" version of some other distros. But Debian will tell
you otherwise:

https://www.debian.org/releases/sid/

Listen to Debian in this case, especially since it's your financial
data. So using the Ubuntu naming method, think of Sid Unstable as
"Sid Vicious", and expect lots of crashes, core dumps, and other nasty
things to occur when you're using gnucash. They won't be caused by
gnucash, but they will affect what you're trying to do.

If you can navigate that and work around the instability, give it a
try. I'm OK with 2.6.whatever until Ubuntu 18 gets 3.

I have been running Ubuntu 18.04 for some time and have found it to be
fine for my business and personal use.

In addition, I downloaded 3.2 source when it was announced and compiled
it.  Some problems but nothing that hurt my data.  Currently I have
3.2-100 (a patch set) pulled down from github and that solves the data
entry problems I was experiencing.  If you are comfortable compiling the
code (isn't that hard once the dependencies are installed) then the
group here will help if you run into error conditions.

Indeed. On receipt of your email I immediately installed dbus-x11. It
added two more directories to my home directory. ./dbus and
./config/dconf. (Is ~./conf now obsolete?) I did not have to reboot in
order to use dbus-x11.

I opened in a terminal dconf-editor, and no longer receive the error
messages quoted in paragraph (c) above. To change the value of any
variable from the default, turn off the default and select the new
value. To save it hit the green box with a white √ in it located it the
lower right corner of the window.

In short, thanks to you in particular I now have a working gnucash. I
owe you a beer, in fact several. I also owe Adrien and Geert a beer or
two as well.

I still have however a few observations/questions about dconf, etc.,
which I want to send to the three of you in due course after I complete
my researches on the subject.

[GNC] Business Account Set Up Question & Customer Billing Question

2018-08-21 Thread Khristine Ann Ramella
OK, so trying to use gnu for business. Have a two person llc. I set up the
equity accounts like shown based on all the research on gnuhelp and general
accounting I could find.

Each member contributed 720 to start the business. The first person 720 was put
in checking immediately. I put it under Opening Balances and sent it to
checking. So far so good. The second 720 came in a month later. When I go to
make the deposit to the checking account how do categorize it?

Also, why does Equity only show as 740 ? Shouldn't it be 1440 to represent the
720 from each member?

[cid:image001.jpg@01D4399E.B10A5F50]

I also have a billing question. When I enter a credit card charge or checking
account debit, I want to be able to assign a customer & their specific job to
the purchase. We buy & bill out a lot of supplies for each client-most with an
upcharge so it isn't an even swap. In Qbooks you can just check a box and
assign the purchase or invoice to the customer job, so I can see expenses
versus billing right away for the customer and their job. I did some gnusearch
on this and didn't really get a clear cut answer.

I would hate to have to go back to QB but this is a deal breaker-lots of parts
for each customer and each customer has lots of jobs (installs/service calls)

Thanks so much for your expertise!!!

Re: [GNC] Business Account Set Up Question & Customer Billing Question

2018-08-21 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Welcome to GnuCash!

Capital Equity investments should be like so:

Dr. Assets:Checking
Cr. Equity:Paid-in-capital:Partner A/B

Or using some similar accounts. You want to record the receipt of an asset, and
you want to balance that against a specific partner’s equity.

Opening balances are for when you have a balance pre-existing from older books
(or no books) for a particular account.

If you do this for both initial investments, Equity should show 1440 total
paid-in.

The client re-billing issue however is a different matter.

There is a ‘jobs’ feature in GnuCash, but it is very limited at the moment.
Each vendor can have only one job. So if you buy ‘parts’ or multiple items on
the same invoice from a single vendor and then in some fashion, direct,
recombined, or further process or manufacture, you can’t tie that job to
multiple clients.

That would be more of an inventory system and GnuCash doesn’t have that at
present. (and may not, its purpose is to be an accounting system, not inventory
control, point of sale, etc cetera, but external modules are possible, just no
one has written this yet.)

At the very least you could use a spreadsheet for tracking what to bill
customers, but I’m sure there is better software out there to handle the task.
You’d then import the resulting transaction into GnuCash for the accounting.

Sorry, I know that wasn’t the answer you were looking for.

It might be possible, using either directly entered transactions, downloaded
transactions from a card issuer, or maybe even via invoices to ’tag’
transactions or splits for particular customers. (likely using the Description,
Notes or Memo fields) You can then use this to generate a transaction report
that can be used to then bill customers — not simple, I know.

But if that’s the present hangup/issue, be patient and ask for more help
specifically on those points and someone will be able to guide you through.

If you are using one of the SQL backends (sqlite3 has the lowest barrier for
new users) you have the option of using SQL queries on the data directly
outside of GnuCash or via something called PieCash which gives a python
scripting interface to those backends. (without having to learn SQL) This way,
you could run a python script or SQL query to create a CSV of the needed items
to be re-billed, even including your markup, all generated in a format to be
imported directly into GnuCash as an invoice that you can track in GnuCash and
print/send to your client. This is probably the most likely solution for you
though others may offer other suggestions.

Just remember NOT to *write* back to the database using SQL for the foreseeable
future. GnuCash is not yet a ‘full’ database driven application. Use the
importers for bringing in data you don’t want to enter directly.

Regards,
Adrien

Yes, thank you, I may try building from source. Has there ever been a
standalone .deb package for GnuCash? I don't know what the flatpack
is, but it occurs to me that for linux, debian, etc., a 3.x .deb might
be worthwhile. But I don't think I have seen a .deb package on the
download links at GnuCash.org.

If not, is that intentional? Some distros are good with
"automagically" finding and installing dependencies when using .deb
packages, and some are not. Source may be less hassle anyway on some
distros.

Yes, your equity account should show 1440.  Go to that account on the
account page and double click on it.  It should show you all the
detailed transactions.  Hopefully you will spot something in there that
will lead you to your answer.  Probably an errant transaction that
didn't belong in that account (or one you forgot happened).

Could you put something in the memo portion of the main transaction
(would show on all splits) and then filter by that?  I've not used
customer billing so can't help any further than that.

I'm not sure which distro the developers use.  So there may not be one
that could create a deb package.  I'm not sure what would be involved to

Oh.  I looked at the image again.  It looks like you have a bunch of
sub-accounts under Equity that offset each other except for the opening
balance of 740.  I'd talk with a CPA about how they want the COA structured.
