Re: [GNC] There was an error parsing the file

2018-05-16 Thread Anthony Marrian
Thanks, John

There is one warning:
[GncXmlBackend::load()] Syntax error in Xml File (followed by
path to data file)

And two criticals:
[dom_tree_handlers_all_gotten_p()] Not defined and it should be:
trn:date-posted
[dom_tree_generic_parse()] didn't find all of the expected tags in the
input

How should I proceed?

I'm glad you got it fixed.

The alternative solution would have meant to edit the xml file by hand and add
the missing posted date that got reported in the trace file.

Depending on your xml editing skills your solution may have been easier.

[GNC] Backup and restore GnuCash Settings

2018-05-16 Thread Nikos Charonitakis
Hi All
I have recently made a back of my home directory on a fedora 27 pc
and then i restored it to a new installation on fedora 28. I was
expecting to open Gnucash and continue working on my latest Gnucash
file and also have all my settings in place but this was not the case.
Running Gnucash on the new installation is like you start application
for the first time.
Firefox for example does not have this behavior, all my setting
plugins, bookmarks, passwords are in their place after restoring my
home dir.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Note:
This is not specific to GnuCash 3, i have seen the same thing and on
previous gnucash versions.

Re: [GNC] Backup and restore GnuCash Settings

2018-05-16 Thread C M Reinehr
As a long time Linux user and having used GnuCash for several years I
can tell you that your GnuCash settings are in a hidden file in your
home directory: ~/.gnucash

You didn't say how you made your backup so, as David asked, did you back
up your hidden files. If, for example, you used `tar` by running the
command `tar cvf /home/tmp/backup.tar /home/nikos` then your hidden
files should have been copied. However, if you instead ran `tar cvf
backup.tar *` from within your home directory, your hidden files would
not have been copied.

Fedora version 28 installs Gnucash 3.0.1.something if you use the

In addition to the other replies, a number of settings (like the first-run
flag or the last opened file history) is stored in gsettings (which on linux
is backed by dconf). Did you also backup and restore your dconf storage ?

As far as I can see there no longer is an eyedropper tool in the 3.1 version
of gnucash. There is a color selector with predefined colors and an option to
add your own custom colors from a more detailed color selector. But in neither
window there's an eyedropper tool.

As this is something that comes directly from gtk, any request to put it back
(if that's wanted/needed) should be addressed at the gtk bug tracker...

Re: [GNC] Backup and restore GnuCash Settings

2018-05-16 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Since Firefox stores user prefs in $HOME/.mozilla, I’d be surprised if .gnucash
didn’t get backed up also, unless the OP used a custom command and .mozilla was
specifically included and .gnucash wasn’t.

But if this were some sort of backup app and it was set to backup hidden files,
then .gnucash should be there. Perhaps it didn’t get restored though.

Adrien

[GNC] Need User friendly guide to importing qfx file

2018-05-16 Thread eNews
Hello!

I am new to GnuCash and attempted my first import of a qfx file from my
bank. When I import the file, the "Generic import transaction matcher" is
blank/empty. Although I've researched the answers to similar questions, I
do not understand the technical answers to them. The closest I came to a
solution was from 2014, but I am using version 3.0 uploaded in 2018.
Wouldn't that bug be fixed by now? Many of the answers discuss ofx, which I
do not think applies to the qfx issue I am having.

I am an accounting end user with no experience in programming. Can someone
tell me in childlike laymen's terms how to get GnuCash to import a qfx file
of my bank's transactions? I am using Windows 10 Home.

So far I'm really happy with my conversion from Quicken to GnuCash, so I am
determined to make this import work.

Thank you for your time.

Kate

Re: [GNC] Backup and restore GnuCash Settings

2018-05-16 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Was this the order of operations?

#1 Upgrade/Install new OS version
#2 Restore backup
#3 Install new version of GnuCash

If #2 happened before #3, perhaps the GnuCash install is overwriting the
restored .gnucash folder with a fresh copy.

Does restoring just that folder again from the backup restore your settings?

If so, then a bug should be filed on the overwrite issue.

If you installed GnuCash first and then restored the .gnucash folder from the
backup, then for some reason it is not being seen.

But one last thing to check:

Perhaps you have a permissions/ownership issue? Is the .gnucash folder and
contents owned by your current user number with the proper read-write
permissions? Be sure to check the owner’s user #, not just the name. So if you
were user 1000 in Fedora 27, you’d need to be user 1000 in v.28 or else change
the ownership of .gnucash and contents to your new user number.

Adrien

I just started using GNUCASh and tried to use BMO Nesbitburns,CA as the quote

Did things changed between 2013 and today?

I upgraded from Ubuntu 17.10 to Ubuntu 18.04 this past weekend and
installed Gnucash 3.1 per the instructions on the wiki. Things went without
a hitch (with Gnucash, anyway) and the new version looks lovely. I've never
had an issue with losing my settings from an upgrade.

I will strongly encourage you to use a separate /home partition. I've done
this for years and it makes upgrading -- dare I say it? -- easy.

[GNC] No file showing up at "Generic import transaction matcher"

2018-05-16 Thread eNews
I've tried importing .qfx files from downloads from two different banks:
Chase and USAA. No files are showing up on the Generic import transaction
matcher, so I am unable to import transactions.

Why is GnuCash not importing .qfx files in Version: 3.0. Build ID: git 3.0+
(2018-04-01)? Is there a workaround that needs to be done?

Thanks,

Kate

Thanks David! That January 2018 thread was helpful. I'm not sure why
DDG didn't turn it up. :(

My impression is that the format really doesn't make an appreciable
difference to performance, and that a SQL format might be more flexible
for reporting but otherwise the formats are basically interchangeable.
Does that sound like a reasonable summary?

I may simply stick with XML for now since it's easy and lazy.

Re: [GNC] No file showing up at "Generic import transaction matcher"

2018-05-16 Thread David Carlson
Do you mean that you cannot find the folder where your file is located
after starting the import assistant or something different. There is a
known bug that that windows version cannot find mapped network files. If
that is your issue you will have to either wait for release 3.2 or copy the
import files to a local folder on your 'C' drive.

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-16 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I just stumbled on this bug report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=796122

Is your data file in a shared folder? Is it local or on another device/machine?

As the bug report suggests, perhaps try cleaning up the data folder (maybe move
all but the main file to another location if you don’t want to delete them) and
see if that improves performance on the save.

If so, any additional info you can provide in the bug report might help.

I presume you’ve got the report dates and book dates set correctly, but are
those scheduled transactions still marked as ‘enabled’ in the editor?

I don’t have any expired SXs to test, but I was able to get my current set to
individually appear and disappear on the report by checking and unchecking the

Re: [GNC] pros/cons of storage formats

2018-05-16 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Keith,

The SQL backends are having a few issues at the moment. It would be a good idea
to search the list here and also to look over the bug reports on Bugzilla.

I originally used MySQL when I was running an Ubuntu box as my daily machine,
but changed to XML when I moved to MacOS, and then switched to sqlite3 about
two years ago, but had to change back to XML since the 3.x series release due
to several bugs related to the business features. (if you don’t use those, you
might not have any problems)

If all you want is the ability to run outside queries for custom reporting or
data integration, then sqlite3 is probably your safest bet. MySQL and Postgres
are much more involved to setup and maintain. Essentially, if you’re not a
database admin, you probably don’t need those two or will not find any
advantage to the maintenance learning curve and overhead, stick with sqlite3 or
XML.

As for searching the list archives, use the following syntax before your search
query terms:

site:lists.gnucash.org

However, I see that DuckDuckGo does not return any results with this method.

Google does, as well as StartPage. (the latter I find to be more privacy
conscious than DDG and usually provides me more relevant results.) I haven’t
tested any other search engines with that syntax.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] No file showing up at "Generic import transaction matcher"

2018-05-16 Thread Kate Kelly
Although locating the file proved difficult for me (a matter unrelated to
GnuCash 😊), that was not my issue. After installing v3.1, I was able to
import files. Before the upgrade, the Import "box" was blank/empty.

Thank you for help.

Kate

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-16 Thread Adrien Monteleone
And here’s another bug report - this time with the XML backend:

Seems you are not alone.
