Re: GNU Cash Transactions - Wiped Out

Roy,

What is the name of your data file and where do you have it stored? If all
the accounts are devoid of transactions, are they all present?

Did you look for the backups that are mentioned in the online FAQs?

Configuring GnuCash to fetch stock prices from ASX

2017-11-10 Thread Justin Smith
Hi All,

I had configured GnuCash to fetch stock prices with a single quote source
set to "Yahoo Australia". Like many others on this list, this stopped
working recently when Yahoo discontinued their service.

After trying a few things, I noticed that the following works:

$ gnc-fq-dump asx bhp
Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:
symbol: bhp  <=== required
  date: ** missing **<=== recommended
  currency: AUD  <=== required
  last: 28.070   <=\
   * correct price *
   nav:  <=== one of these
 price: 28.070   <=/
  timezone:  <=== optional

** This quote will have today's date, which might be incorrect.
   GnuCash will use it, but you might prefer that it doesn't.

But, when I set the single quote source for this stock to "Australian Stock
Exchange, AU", GnuCash returns an error "Unable to retrieve quotes for
these items..."

Does anyone know why gnc-fq-dump works but GnuCash doesn't?

BTW I updated F::Q to version 1.45.

Cheers,
Justin.

Are you relating to the register for a bank account? The register
debit/credit, for most individuals, is confusing, and does not match the
bank statement which presents the bank's (well, duh) statement of your
account, rather than your own statement. The following explains it all:

http://www.finweb.com/banking-credit/debit-reversed-in-banking-accounting.html#axzz4y1epdNbF
https://www.accountingcoach.com/debits-and-credits/explanation
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/debit

In formal accounting, for an asset account such as bank, debits will
*increase* it. But the usual bank statement received by the account holder
will state the opposite. Hence, to the layterm, to "debit an account"
usually means to try to empty it.

2017-11-10 Thread Jeff Abrahamson
Thanks for your efforts, Thomas.

FYI, there's a somewhat dormant gnucash-fr list that might also be
helpful.  (I suspect you know, but just in case.)

For others:  France is a particularly weird case, because (1) we have
nationally legislated account numbers (which seems invasive, but it does
seem to make it easier to move between organisations) and (2) the market
is hollowed out by a recent law that prevents anyone who is subject to
VAT from using open source accounting software (which seems abusive and
is).  The last means there are fewer professionals using gnucash than
one might hope.

Cam,

I don't know about gnucash itself since I don't use it. F::Q handels
the symbols correctly as shown below for CMI.V:

~/.../finance-quote/Examples >>> perl stockdump.pl alphavantage CMI.V
$VAR1 = {
  'CMI.Vopen' => '1.1400',
  'CMI.Vclose' => '1.1000',
  'CMI.Vcurrency_set_by_fq' => 1,
  'CMI.Vvolume' => '5000',
  'CMI.Vmethod' => 'alphavantage',
  'CMI.Vhigh' => '1.1400',
  'CMI.Vlow' => '1.1000',
  'CMI.Vcurrency' => 'CAD',
  'CMI.Vsymbol' => 'CMI.V',
  'CMI.Vlast' => '1.1000',
  'CMI.Vsuccess' => 1,
  'CMI.Vdate' => '11/09/2017',
  'CMI.Visodate' => '2017-11-09'
};

The required fields for gnucash return correct data. So F::Q does the
job. There will probably be something misconfigured in your gnucash
setup..

Let's get clear about what you are and are not seeing. If I am wrong
interpreting what you are trying to describe, say so.

I am taking what you describe when starting gnucash is that it opens a
file where you DO see all of the accounts you expect to see, but when
you ask it to open an account, you don't see the transactions you expect
to see.

Things to check:
a) Is this the right file that was opened? You should see its name
displayed. Remember, you data is NOT "in the program" but in data files
(you can have several, one program (gnucash) being used to keep
different books.

b) If it is the right file, check that there are no date range filters
in effect. For example, if you were (accidentally) asking gnucash to
show you just 2018 on you would not expect to see any transactions.

I am suspecting as much. There is no alphavantage key error, so it is
clearly present in the bash environment. For example:

gnc-fq-dump alphavantage ALV.V
Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:
    symbol: ALV.V    <=== required
  date: 11/10/2017   <=== recommended
  currency: CAD  <=== required
  last: 0.1950   <=\
   nav:  <=== one of these
 price:  <=/
  timezone:  <=== optional

"nav" is not set, which may be the problem, or one of them.  I notice
that it is blank when I test it with US stocks as well, so perhaps not.

Gnucash is throwing an error on something for which no or insufficient
information is available.  I'll go look at bug reports.

Re: Finance-Quote 1.44 released!

2017-11-10 Thread davelist
Sorry, I had left the other TIAA funds using the TIAA source but had
accidentally set QREARX to use AlphVantage. Switching it to using TIAA as the
source works again.

 This symbol isn't supported by the alphavantage API. So we'll need to
 find another source for it. Anyone?

2017-11-10 Thread Cam Ellison

For anyone who has been following this thread, and especially for Erik:

The problem turned out to be a couple of stocks that I no longer hold
but are still in the table for historical reasons, whose quote
assignments were incorrect. All good now.

Thank you again, Erik, for your patience,

Currency/metals quotes with new f::q 1.45?

2017-11-10 Thread listreader
I am using GnuCash 2.6.16 and Finance-Quote 1.45 (linux). US stock
quotes work fine for me but I am not getting how to get precious metals
quotes to work through the gnucash frontend. I think I've tried every
possible combo of settings in gnucash. Is this available yet?

FWIW, here's the data returned when directly accessing alphavantage for
a silver quote using https:

"https://www.alphavantage.co/query?function=CURRENCY_EXCHANGE_RATE&from_currency=XAG&to_currency=USD&apikey=(mykey)"

"Realtime Currency Exchange Rate":
 "1. From_Currency Code": "XAG",
 "2. From_Currency Name": "Silver Ounce",
 "3. To_Currency Code": "USD",
 "4. To_Currency Name": "United States Dollar",
 "5. Exchange Rate": "16.89899689",
 "6. Last Refreshed": "2017-11-11 04:21:27",

Re: API Key

2017-11-10 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Les, Dave,

Thanks for airing this out a little more.

I had not succeeded in getting this to work, mostly because I didn’t understand
the FAQ, which tells us to add the environment key to
"/etc/gnucash/environment where prefix is:” in one spot, and then says
"/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources on MacOS."

Apparently my memory has become so abbreviated that by the time I got to the
second part, I had forgotten about the first part, and added the variable to a
new environment file in “/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources”, rather
than adding the value to the functional (and already existing) environment file
in /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/etc/gnucash/environment.

I have modified the FAQ so that this ambiguity is removed. You might call it
idiot-proofing. I’ll own that.

Alphavantage Not Showing Up In List Sources

2017-11-10 Thread Jim Sculley
I'm using Linux Mint 18.2, GnuCash 2.6.12 and Finance::Quote 1.45.  I have my API key in place and when testing via
gnc-fq-dump everything seems to be working:

jim@clifford ~ $ gnc-fq-dump alphavantage GOOGL
Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:
    symbol: GOOGL    <=== required
  date: 11/10/2017   <=== required
  currency: USD  <=== required
  last: 1044.1500    <=\
   nav:  <=== one of these
 price:  <=/
  timezone:  <=== optional
===

However, when I try to set up quote retrieval in GnuCash, alphavantage is not listed as a quote source.  When I switch
the type of quote source to 'Unknown' as described in the FAQ, the drop down list has only the following 9 entries:

adig

bet

fetch_live_currencies

fidelityfixed

hufund

hungary

hustock

known_currencies

yahoo_yql

Using gnc-fq-check, there are many more listed, including alphavantage:

F::Q on Windows 8.1 works ok, Windows 10.0 no joy

2017-11-10 Thread samsurd2
For background, I've been using GnuCash 2.6.16 on an HP desktop running
Win 8.1 and an HP laptop running Win 10.0 Home version.
I usually update quotes on the Win 8.1 machine, store the .gnucash
account file on Dropbox and then download/run that file to the Win 10.0
machine.

I do the reverse when I return from being out of town.
The same .gnucash account file and Finance-Quote 1.38 ran fine on both
machines until Yahoo did its thing on Nov. 1.

Yesterday I did the following on the Win 8.1 machine.

1) Got a free AlphaVantage API key
2) Set a new Environmental Variable for both User and System
(ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY=)
3) Removed the previously installed version of Perl from the machine
(including running a registry cleaner)
4) Installed Strawberry Perl  5.26.1.1 (downloaded
strawberry-perl-5.26.1.1-64bit.msi from http://strawberryperl.com/)
5) Ran "Install Online Price Retrieval" from the Start Menu which
successfully installed Finance-Quote 1.45
6) Opened GnuCash and used the Security Editor Tool to change the quote
source to Unknown -> alphavantage on all stocks and funds
7) Used Price Editor Tool to successfully retrieve new quotes (long
list, took 2+ minutes)

Today, I did the following on the Win 10.0 machine.

1) Used the previously acquired AlphaVantage API key to set a new
Environmental Variable for both User and System
(ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY=)
2) Removed the previously installed version of Perl from the machine
(including running a registry cleaner)
3) Installed Strawberry Perl  5.26.1.1 (downloaded
strawberry-perl-5.26.1.1-64bit.msi from http://strawberryperl.com/)
4) Ran "Install Online Price Retrieval" from the Start Menu which
successfully installed Finance-Quote 1.45
5) Opened the .gnucash account file from the Win 8.1 machine that was
saved on Dropbox yesterday
6) Used the Security Editor Tool to verify that the quote source was
already set to Unknown -> alphavantage on all stocks and funds

7) Used Price Editor Tool to attempt to retrieve new quotes
8) Got the message ("An error occurred while trying to...") produced
previously when trying to get quotes from Yahoo.
9) Got a new AlphaVantage API key and used it to change the
Environmental Variables
10) Used Price Editor Tool to attempt to retrieve new quotes and got the
same unsuccessful result

Any suggestions for a next step would be appreciated.
