For being the default engine we'd need an outstanding theme (apart
from lots of work on the engine itself). Would you be interested in
doing one? I like Andreas' proposal to do a green theme, this would
clearly set us apart from the blue that most others are using.

Please take a look at websites such as:

These websites provide many themes and wallpapers for GNOME.

Hallo Robert, here are the mockups:

http://opengeu.intilinux.com/themes/Morning%20breeze%20Bacada.jpg
http://opengeu.intilinux.com/themes/Midnight%20lights%20Bacada.jpg

Keep in mind that these are just mockups. I already know that some things
like the "centered menu" are impossible in GTK. What's important is that the
GTK themes can look as closer as possible to the E17 themes. So, these
pixmap themes should look as close as possible to teh mockups: metacity is
not needed.

Of course, if anyone will be interested in helping (you?), I'll post links
for the original multilayer file: it will be easier to extract usable
pixmaps from the original file.
Greetings and thanks for answering,

I suggest you look at some existing pixmap themes and learn how they are
made. Apart from the centered menus, everything looks possible with a
pixmap theme from the mockups. There is more information about creating
GTK+ themes here: http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/Tutorials/GtkThemes

Some socumentation for the pixbuf engine is available here:

I'm seeing what I can do about it, am looking at the documentation, but I
cannot do everything by myself. OpenGEU is, as the name suggests,
opensource. So, even if I'm the project leader and foundator, I am not a
coder or a gtk themes expert.. it's sad to see that if the project needs
something as simple as a GTK theme, I have to do it myself and nobody shows
up to help. While, sometimes, to code entire new softwares, I do find people
helping... well, thanks for you answer aniway.

I think you've stumbled upon one of the biggest myths about open source:
just because you make a project open source doesn't mean there is an
army of volunteers out there waiting to do the work for you. I'm sure we
will all gladly help you out if you run into problems, but we're not
going to do it for you. Open source is all about scratching your *own*
itch :-)

Yes I would but first we need to clarify what is a theme:
- gtk
- metacity
- and clutter theme (though I don't know if they support anything like that)
- wallpaper
- icons
Is this going to be the new format for a theme pack. I would make the gtk
one based on your egine Robert but I will need a decent documentation (or I
should talk to you) with some examples. A good docs is the way to make more
people interested in making such themes.

Clutter doesn't support theming AFAIK, wallpapers can at least be
requested by themes (maybe also included in the metatheme package),
everything else is already possible.

One goal of the CSS engine is making theme creation easier. We have
adapted the "single canvas" approach that is being used for creating
icons in multiple resolutions from a single SVG file. What designers
will have to do is drawing the theme in inkscape based on a template
we are going to provide. Look at the screenshot below to get an idea.

http://www.gnome.org/~robsta/gtk-css-engine/screenshots/15-single-canvas.png

The template will of course include more than just buttons in the future.

While we are working on this you guys can start tossing around free
form mockups to your liking :-)

I tried to include icons in my theme but the did not show so I quit. But if
you say it works then it works and we should make use of i in the future.

That is good but before we can start making mockups we should know what is
possible with the layout and transparency and the new animation system (that
does not exists yet) or if there are going to be some changes to the UI -
new menus or smth like that.

Still a few mockups with the current system will do for now ;)

Actually it's the other way around. User experience people have to say
what's needed, and we (developers) have to make sure it becomes
possible.
