FWIW, this always has been my opinion, too. Since the string is
untranslated currently, fixing that can only potentially make it better
from the users POV. Of course this results in slightly less good
translation statistics -- however, since the total number of translated
strings won't be affected, there is no downside for the user.

Also, I even seem to recall that marking a string translatable, in the
case this has been forgotten, has not been regarded as String Freeze
break in the past. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

The String Freeze during stable cycles IMHO is most useful to prevent
the developers from arbitrarily changing or adding strings, breaking
existing translations in the worst case.

Actually, now that I checked the proper handling and rules [1] rather
than just going from memory, I found this:

What changes are affected by the string freeze?
Any addition or change of a string marked for translation [...]

What changes are not affected by the string freeze?
  * Marking a message for translation that was previously not marked for
translation by accident. [announce necessary / requested]

Sorry for not chipping in earlier, Federico. I believe we reverted
unnecessarily.

Please note that I am *not* a member of the Translation Project, and
thus this does not count as a second approval. ;)

And that's where I might be wrong. :)

Bad me, should have had a closer look at the patch before replying. From
a fairly quick grepping of the libgnomeui sources it appears these
strings at least are partially new, rather than existing strings simply
marked for translation.

I do, however, stand to the above. ;) Sorry for the noise. I'll creep
back into my hole now, letting you GTP guys handle this properly...

Keep up your great work making GNOME accessible to all people!

One approval from me as user will see the untraslated message either
because nobody could translate them or because they are not translated
into all languages. So, from the user point of view it can just get better.

Note that you need a second approval!

Help me get SVN access for translations

2007-10-19 Thread Og Maciel
All,

I've been trying to get someone to grant me svn access for
translations for 1 month and 19 days now. I have directly emailed the
coordinator responsible for the Brazilian team but haven't gotten a
reply yet. Lucas Rocha told me he would take care of it, since we
assumed that the coordinator took some time off but it has been a
while now and I believe he also took some time off. Which leaves me
with this alternative: ask someone else to lend me a hand?

I had created a ticket (before Mango) which can be viewed here:
https://www.gnome.org/rt3//Ticket/Display.html?id=3789. I have also
created a ticket in Mango thinking that my "old" ticket got lost
somewhere along the migration...

If this sounds desperate, it's because I have been waiting for more
than 1 year now and am feeling disappointed. Can someone lend me a
hand?

Sincerely,

Permisison requested: untranslated error messages in GtkFileSystemGnomeVFS

2007-10-19 Thread Federico Mena Quintero
Dear translators,

So, after screwing the pooch once already :)

I'm requesting permission to apply the patch in
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485922 to the gnome-2-20
branch of libgnomeui.

This patch does two things:

1. Makes error messages in GtkFileSystemGnomeVFS translatable. They
were not marked for translation, so any errors you got from the file
chooser ("permission denied") were not shown translated in the error
dialogs.

2. Fixes another bug with error reporting.

The patch is already in SVN trunk. May I commit it for the gnome-2-20
branch?

Thanks,

  Federico

Sorry for not reverting this on time; I was flying back from China on
the 16th-17th. Thanks to Vincent for reverting this; I'll ask for
permission before putting the patch in again for gnome-2-20 :)
