Re: [Gimp-user] mebbe easy - replace car color but preserve highlights

Layers>Colors options offer many ways to accomplish this task. Pick your
green car (by the way isn't it Volvo?) with color picking tool (Shift+O)
and change some settings like hue; you can desaturate and then colourize
your selection.

Basically, I would like to replace a car color, but not affect the
highlights/lighting affects on the car. For example, if a car is green,
but the picture has it in a certain light, the green will be mixed with
white light, etc. I just want to repalce the underlying green, but let
that mix with the external light the same way that the actual green is.
Is there a way to do this? Basically, for the car itself, for whatever
fraction of green a certain pixel has, I want to change that green to
something else. I might use a plain blue as the replacement, but it
would mix "realistically" - hopefully.

If images are equal size and coordinates are the same, you can do this
manually, I think. Just remember coordinates from selection. Select area
in first image, copy it, make selection of the same size and location in
second one and then paste. And you can make separate layer from that
pasted part for fine tuneing. I'd do so if I were you :)

You could try this, though it's a bit of a kludgey workaround :).

1. Make sure the layer you are working with has an alpha channel (Right
click the layer in the layers dialog->Add alpha channel).
2. After making the selection (oval, scissors, or whatever), invert the
selection. (Cntrl-I or Menu->Select->Invert)
3. Cut everything else out (Cntrl-X). Now these regions will all be
transparent, leaving only what you want.
4. Invert the selection again (Cntrl-I) returning to your original
selection.
5. Copy that (Cntrl-C) and try pasting it. Even if it pastes a
rectangular bounding box, everything other than what you want will not
show.

Of course, save the original image elsewhere in case you do something
inadvertently.

Sometimes email delivery is congested and delayed, resulting in messages
received out of order. Sometimes someone is new to the group and is
just starting to get the posts in the middle of a discussion. That's
why we should always quote the *relevant* part of the prior text in our
reply, to give context to what we are replying about.

I don't like to scroll way down through all records,

First, that is an artifact of BAD quoting - quoting all of the prior
post. When people ONLY quote the part they are replying to then no
scrolling should be necessary to get to their reply.

Second, since you are writing this post for *others* to read, you should
post it in the format that the *others* have said they want it. That
means no top posting.

especially on long threads. So no, I will not reply below quoted text.

So, in other words, you refuse to participate in this group in the
manner in which everyone else participates in it because of your
personal (and misguided) belief that in doing so you make things easier
for yourself, even if it makes things harder for everyone else. That's
selfish and rude.

And yes, i'll try to quote only parts i'm answering to.

If you are willing to do that, why not just go the whole way and stop
top posting and do it the way the rest of the group does it and the way
that netiquette specifies is the preferred method?

<http://www.cybernothing.org/cno/docs/rfc1855.html>

If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting be sure you
summarize the original at the top of the message, or include
just enough text of the original to give a context.

Doing it differently (quoting at the bottom and especially quoting the
entire post at the bottom) *really* screws up quoting when there are
nested quotes.

It would be very refreshing if you would reconsider your reasons for
refusing to cooperate and instead give it a try to do it the way the
group prefers, the way described in RFC 1855, a system that has worked
well for over a decade (since 1995). It would show that A) you aren't
selfish and rude after all; and B) that you are willing to listen to
arguments about why your way may not be best for the group as a whole;
and C) that you DO care about presenting your ideas in a way that makes
it easier for the others in the group to read them.

Thank you!

jc

I do hope it was interesting and relevant post not only for me but for

Well, it is nothing special, just it would make nice effect, I think. Parabolic and hyperbolic gradients would be nice too. It would make impression of "deeper" depth. It would be nice if GIMP had possibility of making such gradients like y=x^p, where p would mean optional power to which x should be raised.

You can move text layer with move layer tool - keyboard shortcut is M.
You have to point at text layer's content - namely letters. Then cursor from
pointing finger changes to cursor with 4-sided arrow (if text layer is not
selected in Layers tab, then pointer with 4-sided arrow changes to pointing
finger) and you can move layer whereever you like. Zooming in picture should

Re: [Gimp-user] Save For Web Option?

What format your file is? BMP? TIFF? If so, just saving to jpg would
make the trick.

Hi All,

am a rather experienced Linux user for the past 2yrs or so, but, not
much with Gimp. I used to use Fireworks/Photoshop on Windows some time
back, and am wondering where within Gimp I can just save as for web,
and it allows me to resize etc. I can't seem to find that option
anywhere in the menus. All I see is, save, save as, save a copy, save
as template. I have a 14.5mb file that I need to get to under 500kb or
less. Could someone point this non-gui fool in the right direction?
Cheers.

Hello

I've recently upgraded from RHL 7.3 to Fedora, and hence from Gimp version
1.2.3 to version 2.2.10 One thing that has puzzled us is that when doing a
'grab' of a single window (via File->Aquire->Screenshot), there is no
longer the option of grabbing a window without decorations (i.e. without
its title bar, control buttons etc.). Other than selecting, copying and
pasting from the grabbed window in Gimp to exclude the decorations (which
is not always accurate and users are complaining) is there a way of getting
the 'Without Decorations' button to show as in version 1.2.3 on the
Screenshot command?

Many thanks
Roy

Similar complaint here. No matter how I try to shot just selected area I
can't. When cursor turns into crosshair I can't select just desired area
of window, but the whole window or screen.

GIF handles transparency perfectly, but it can not handle partial
transparency. And it is not good at colours. When removing background, do not
forget to add alpha channel Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha channell.

Do you anchor pasted photo? You can not manipulate floating layer.
Call layers window:
Ctrl+L

Highlight floating layer

Click New layer button

Wouldn't it be more convenient just open image, press t for text tool and
write your copyright info. Then you can reduce text layer's opacity and then
save whole picture in any format.

Actually, I think there is a way to make a mosaic although I've never tried
it. Funny that you asked this question because I was looking it up
yesterday. There's an image mosaic plug-in for Gimp. Check out:
http://www.kirchgessner.net/photo-mosaic.html . Let me know if you're
successful at all.
