[Gimp-user] Print margins/scaling problem

2006-09-15 Thread Michael Foster
I am experiencing a problem where if I try to print an image on a 8.5 x
11 page with 1/2" margins it gives me a 1" margin on the top and
squishes the image to fit. If I scale the image down I still get the 1"
margin at the top but the image is not distorted. My printer is an HP
Deskjet 9800 and I am using the recommended Adobe Postscript Level 2
driver (problem also occurs with Level 1). I am using Ubuntu 6.06, Gimp
2.2.11, Gutenprint 5.0.0-rc2, HPLIP 0.9.7 driver in the OS. This
problem does not occur outside of Gimp.

Has anyone had this problem or can suggest things to try?

Thanks,
Mike

You shouldn't have any problem, you'll just need to save the file in a
different format as I don't think Photoshop can read GIMP's XCF files.
If the Photoshop user plans to do more with the file once they get it,
or if you plan to be exchanging it back and forth, then your best bet
would be to save it as a PSD file. If they are just taking your file
and printing it directly then you could export it to PNG or JPG (if you
need the file to be small).

Re: [Gimp-user] Is this compatible?

2006-10-07 Thread Michael Foster
TIFF is another good option, however the Wikipedia entry for PNG says it
uses a type of lossless compression. Have I missed something here? I
am very curious to know the answer as I have started to save my
completed photographs as PNG because I thought there was no penalty for
doing so.

Thanks,
Mike

My advice would be to save your files in TIFF format. If you enable
LZW compression, the file size will be significantly reduced without
losing quality (unlike JPEG, and to some degree PNG).

I'm not sure what process your printer is using, but if it's just a
full-color transfer, a resolution of 200 DPI will be sufficient.

Re: [Gimp-user] Question about TIFF error message

I get the following error message when I bring a TIFF image into the GIMP
application: "TIFF IMAGE MESSAGE- unknown field with tag 34665 (0x8769

image converter.

Can someone tell me what this means and what I can do to correct it? Thanks,

I found a reference to the tag here :

http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags/exififd.html

It looks like it might have something to do with the EXIF data it's
passing on from your RAW file. See if you have an option that leaves
this data out.
I have a FinePix S9000 and I've been using UFRaw to convert my RAF files
. I haven't used the Fuji software yet, so I can't compare it but you
might want to have a look at UFRaw as well.

Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP for annotation

2007-06-12 Thread Michael Foster
Hello Steven,

If you're talking about creating a new image with your text overlaid you
probably should look at imagemagick. It gives you lots of control and
is great in scripts if you're doing bulk operations. An extensive set
of examples of how to use it do this can be found here:
