I couldn't agree more (and that movie you're referring to I haven't even
seen), but if the masses don't want it changed (which is the impression
I got from the last thread asking the opinion of a name change) then
don't change it. It's that simple. And if we won't change it then don't
let anyone change it, because I've come to realize that giving [dump]
people choices will hurt them. Even if it was up the the user to call
the GIMP something else (say ImageBlah), would you actually tell your
friend "I'm using ImageBlah" ...? I certainly would not, because they
go to google and imageblah doesn't exist !!! So that's why I think the
decision has to be collective. All or none.

[Gimp-user] _free_ fonts

2005-04-30 Thread Gezim Hoxha
Hi list,

I'm getting a little frustrated with fonts. Almost all of the authors
(of nice fonts) either don't want you to use them for commercial
purposes, want you to email the them _before_ you use it to get
permission, want you to pay, or simply you don't know what the hell the
author wants.

So, my question is is there some fonts that I could get that are for
_free_, meaning you don't have to pay anything, but also you can do what
the heck you wish with it as well. Am I just dreaming or what?

Thanks alot,

The drop shadow, I think, was just an example. What if, instead, I

I'm not sure who "they" are, but if you're referring to people in this
list that are not afraid to admit gimp's weaknesses, these people have
every right to point them out. You can't fix a problem if you don't even
accept it. Lack of layer effects is not a problem? ...Just ask the

Re: [Gimp-user] Newbie having trouble with layers, text and otherwise

2005-05-06 Thread Gezim Hoxha
Welcome John. (2 ways to do this. Top one is better, because it's easier
to colour the background)

1.) First open a new image (File>New...) with the desired size (in this
case I thing you said 6.75 X 4.75) and the desired background colour,
then open the "central image" (File>Open...), then copy the "central
image" (Edit>Copy (make sure it's the correct layer if you have more
than one in the "central image", or just flatten the central image, the
flattening of an image means merging all layers together and it's done
by right clicking on the layers dialog box and choosing "Flatten
image")) and paste it into the "new image" (the one you just created
with 6.75X4.75) by doing Edit>Paste in the "new image" and then finally
you have to create a new layer in "new image" or choose "anchor layer"
for the pasting to take place. The last thing, of course, would be the
text.

OR

2.) You can open "central image", go to "Image>Canvas Size..." then
choose the new size (6.75X4.75) and at the bottom a little preview
should be there. Here you can drag the image around to tell GIMP where
the new space is going to go (e.g. around the image, top left, bottom
left, etc.)

In gimp 2.2, if you don't necessarily want the fonts installed on the
whole system (i.e. the fonts will only work in gimp), then you could
just put the fonts in a directory (ex. /home/gezim/fonts/) then start
gimp and go to "File>Preferences" (in the main window) then on the left
hand side, click the arrow beside "Folders" (this will expand the
"Folders"). Finally, click on "Fonts". Now on the right half of the
window, click the plus sign, then in the text field enter the location
of the font's folder or click "..." to browse manually. The font
directory should be listed below the text field, and without a checkmark
under "writable". Now you can click "OK" and then restart GIMP. As for
choosing fonts, make sure the "tool options windows" is open, however,
if not, go to "File>Dialogs>Tool Options".

You probably confused some number because (last time I checked) there

Gimp 2.3.1 is the latest unstable version. And gimp 2.2.7 is the latest
_stable_ version.

This doesn't happen in my gimp. I have 2.2.3 in linux. Try doing
Image>Scale Image on Image B before you copy and paste it to image A.
This might help.

If you think it's a bug then (if you can) please go to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/simple-bug-guide.cgi

And submit a bug by doing this:
First creating a new account (I know this could be a pain but it helps
the developers to track you down if they need more info from you).
Then login.
Go to above link.
On the first page choose appropriate option and then go to second page
(by clicking "next page" button).
Here make sure you put a check mark on "Click here to also show
applications not part of the GNOME 2 Desktop"
Then on the selection list select "GIMP" then go "next page" again.
Then on this page the component is likely "tools" according to your
description. So choose that and move on to next page.
On this page you choose bug "severity" and move on.
Then you choose gimp version (in your case I think it's 2.2.7 and _not_
2.7 :)
Then _finally_ you fill out the details.

> Also, if I open, say, three images and copy-and-paste them onto a

> Photoshop Elements. What I see instead is a background layer
> containing the first two images I copy-and-paste'ed plus one floating
> selection layer. Is this the correct behavior?

Yes. I think the developers (God bless them) intended for this to
happen. When you copy one image into another (Edit> Copy then
Edit>paste), gimp does not automatically create a layer for you but
rather gives you a temporary layer called "Floating Selection (Pasted
Layer)". Now you have to options, one being "Anchor Layer" (access this
by right clicking on the floating layer) and the other "New Layer".
Anchor layer merges the floating layer and the layer under it, whereas
new layer puts the floating selection in a new layer. It turns out (I
just tried it) if you paste and you have "Floating Selection" layer then
the action that will be taken by gimp is make the "anchor layer".

Thanks for helping out The GIMP Don, and I hope you like it.

[Gimp-user] stroke selection

2003-12-26 Thread Gezim Hoxha
Hi gimpers,

I got gimp 1.3.23 and pretty satisfied with it.
Congrats to the developers.
One problem though:
When I make a [rectangular] selection and go to

where my storke is gonna go (i.e.inside the selection,
in the mid., or outside) and the "cap style" seems to
make no difference in any of them. Also I don't get
what the miter limit is all about.
If someone could explain these things to me, it would
be great :)

[Gimp-user] renaming the gimp

2004-11-07 Thread Gezim Hoxha
Hi all,

I find the name GIMP not very attractive and I think
if we want to market the GIMP we need to do something
about this name (i.e. change it). I have friends ask

"GIMP" it doesn't sound good, and it's hard to
remember. So what do YOU think, does the GIMP need a
name change?

THe name should imply/tell something about the
application...GIMP doesn't say anything to me other
than a disabled person. I know that gimp is
popular...with the current name, and it may well make
it BIG with the current name...I just think a more

better subject (in this case something like "plugins
in windows xp" )

That's strange...well a .c file is a C file, meaning
it's the source code of some C program. C is a
programming language. In order to get it from .c to
.exe you need to compile it...if you have no idea
what the heck I'm talking about just send the URL to
the list and I or someone else will be happy to
compile this file for you, and post the .exe file
somewhere. And chances are you downloaded the wrong
file of the plugin (i.e. the source). As far as
"gimptool" I wouldn't know...but I guess (big guess)
that it's just some part of gimp--maybe toolbar!

p.s. do you have gimp 2.something ?

[Gimp-user] opening multiple images from kde

2004-11-13 Thread Gezim Hoxha
Hi all,

Here what I want to do:
Since gimp doesn't have an image viewer (no problem) I
just use the kde (konqueror). I just selected the
images I wanted to open then on one of them I right
clicked and chose open with gimpbehold 10 sessions
of gimp opened up. So is there an argument for gimp
that says "Ok if a gimp session is open, just use that
session to open these images." I read the man pages
and there was some session argument but no idea how to
use it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's perfect, that all I wanted. I assumed it would
be an argument like mozilla (mozilla -t, i think opens
new tab).

I'm not sure I understand I know what you mean by
"conditions"... :|

Since the images were jpeg, gimp of course isn't my
default program to open jpeg, so I right clicked and
choose to "Open with...>Other" then I just typed
"GIMP". Which of course executed gimp and not
gimp-remote. So thanks for your answers Sven and
Patrick Shanahan :)
