[gentoo-user] network setup
Hello, can I set up the network startup so that eth0 first tries to get address from a dhcp server, and if it doesn't get any, it sets up with a fixed address? How can I set up this in the /etc/con.d/net? Thanks for the help in advance, István -- gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] portage doesn't like whitespaces

[gentoo-user] notebook lcd resolution problem
Hello! I bought an MSI notebook with a 17" LCD display and a GeForce Go 6100 vga card. My problem is that I can start xorg only in 800x600 or less resolution, but according to the manual it should operate in 1440x900. Attached you can see my X config file and the log file. It seems to me that xorg can't detect the display correctly, but I don't know how to correct it. [gentoo-user] PEAR::Net_Socket problem
Hello! I try to install the egroupware web application, but for the imap (FeLaMiMail) support it needs PEAR::Net_Socket php extension. First I had installed is with portage, but egroupware still complained about it, then I tried to install it with the pear command, but egroupware still doesn't see it. Pear says it is installed, so I don't know why egroupware doesn't want to see it; furthermore, I installed the Auth_SASL php extension too, and that is visible by Egropuware. [gentoo-user] hp dat 72 compression problem
Hello! I have problem using our hp dat 72 in our fileserver. I'm not able to put 72 GB of data on the cartridge, though I set the compression to 1 in the stinit.def file. Here is the contents of the config file: # cat /etc/stinit.def manufacturer=HP model="C7438A" { scsi2logical=1 mode1 blocksize=512 compression=1 } Strange that the writing stops at block 90669441 and because one block means 512 bytes, it seems that I can write 90669441*512=46 422 753 792 bytes (~46.5GB) on the tape, and I thougth that the capacitiy of the tape is either 36 or 72 GB. Maybe I should play with the density code parameter instead of the compression, but I don't know what value I sould set. Currently I'm using the density code 0x47 (TR-5) (this is the default value). Does anybody know how to set up the drive to be able to write 72GB of data onto it? Thanks for the help in advance, Istvan -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] locale settings
Hello! I have problem with the locale settings of my system. My main problem is, that I can't use some special hungarian characters in file names. They don't even appear on the console screen, when I try to type them. But in X applications mostly I can use these characters. But if I create a directory with Konqueror, in the resulted directory name these special characters are substituted with an ? sign. What shall I do to correct these problems? [gentoo-user] lack of openoffice and firefox binary for ppc
Hello! What is the reason of the lack of binary packages of openoffice and firefox for ppc based machines? Compiling oo takes a very long time, and on my machine it even ends with a segmentation fault, so I couldn't install oo at all. In other ppc based distroes I saw binary oo packages. My machine is even not a mac, but a pegasos (maybe someone heard about it :) ). It is possible that my hardware is weak for compiling oo, because I have only 256M memory. Hello! Does somebody have any experience with $SUBJECT? I bought this card and downloaded the driver from Adaptec website. I tried to merge it into my kernel tree, but during the merge I got error message: # ./Build ../driver-aar81xx/ ../shipped-binary ../../linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1 merge_driver=Yes blist=NULL, build job terminated . Okay, I tried another way: ./Build ../driver-aar81xx/ ../shipped-binary ../../linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1 merge_driver=Yes blist+=i386 cp: cannot stat `/usr/src/adaptec/shipped-binary/host_raid.o.aar81xx.AuthenticAMD.3.3.5-20050130': No such file or directory subdir-$(CONFIG_SCSI_AAR81XX) += aar81xx Please remember to run make menuconfig and hand pick AAR81XX in device drivers/scsi/low level drivers. Attention Fedora 3 users: If you plan to build kernel image based on configs/kernel-2.6.9-ix86*.config then you need to do this: cp /usr/src/adaptec/shipped_modules/host_raid.o.adpsata.ix86.3.4.2 /usr/src/linux-2.6.9-1.667/drivers/scsi/adpsata/host_raid.o_shipped . I still got error during the merge, but the driver source merged into the kernel. Then I tried to compile the new kernel module, but I got this error: make[3]: *** No rule to make target `drivers/scsi/aar81xx/host_raid.s', needed by `drivers/scsi/aar81xx/host_raid.o'. Stop. make[2]: *** [drivers/scsi/aar81xx] Error 2 make[1]: *** [drivers/scsi] Error 2 make: *** [drivers] Error 2 I'm using kernel 2.6.15-gentoo-r1. What did I wrong? [gentoo-user] problems using ivman
Hello! I have some little problems with ivman, and I hope somebody could help me: - It does not creates entries in fstab, so when I put in some device, though it is mounted it is not shown on kde's desktop. - The mounted devices only can be unmounted by root, not as simple user. This is problem when using pendrives for example, because if I write something to the device I want to unmount it before plug it out to avoid data loss. [gentoo-user] permissions for a common folder
Hello! We have a file server, and there are a common directory for a group of a users. I set this common folder's permission to 2775 and that results that a newly created file or directory will have the same goup owner as the common dir. But the problem is, that if someone creates a file or a directory in this common folder, the permissions will be 644 or 755, and so the other users in the same group can't write that file or directory, only if the creator of the entry sets it manually to 664 or 775. Is there any way to tell the Linux to automatically set the rights to 664 or 775 in this common directory (and only in this)? This common dir is also shared with samba for the windows users, and in samba it is possible to set this. Thanks for the help in advance, Istvan -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

See 'man acl' for more info. Okay, I think I have to use acl. I've read its documentation, and set up the following acl's: setfacl -m d:u::rw /home/stefi/kepek/ setfacl -m d:g::rw /home/stefi/kepek/ setfacl -m d:o::r /home/stefi/kepek/ Now, if I create a file in this directory, it's permission will be 664 instead of the default 644. That's very good. But if I create a directory it's permissons also will be 664. But I want it to be 775. How can I achive this? Thanks, Istvan -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
