Thanks for the help Richard but after trying your suggestions I still Have the
same problem. This is so frustrating, I'm sure it will turn out to be
something simple, but I just can't see it.
I still don't know what xiTK is and if it's relevent.

[gentoo-user] Can't see networked windows xp machine

2005-06-02 Thread Paul
Hi all,
I use kde and when I try the lan Browse option in konqueror I get a message
box telling me that The Lisa daemon does not appear to be running.
This is after using the guided setup option in control panel and stopping and
starting lisa.
Has anybody else had this problem or have any suggestions to resolve this
issue, please let me know.
I can connect and send files from the windows machine onto my linux box which
works via samba.

Thanks

I just thought I would let you know what I've done to resolve this problem.
I have emerged gentoolkit-0.2.1_pre3 and made an entry in my make.conf of
SEARCH_DIRS_MASK="/opt".
I then ran revdep-rebuild and all ran without any open office errors.

Hope this helps

Thanks Tim

I have now fixed the problem. My confusion was caused by the fact that
when I tried "emerge --unmerge gtk-doc-am" I was told that gtk-doc-am
was not installed. It turns out that gtk-doc was installed and so
running the command "emerge -avC gtk-doc" as you suggested did the job.

I have raised bug 221195 to help clarify the situation.

Re: [gentoo-user] OT :video cameras and gentoo

2007-08-12 Thread Paul
i have a sony digital camera that takes movies, and it just shows up as a
usb drive. i would assume that the video recorders would work the same
way. maybe you can take a laptop to a store that sells them and check to
see if it works that way or find someone that has one and borrow it. if you
dont want sony recorders im sure you can find another brand with the same
interface.

Re: [gentoo-user] OT :video cameras and gentoo

2007-08-13 Thread Paul
i meant its main function is taking photos. an added feature is it takes
movies, i wouldn't consider it a serious camera. show us what you are
getting in dmesg when you plug in the camera. and i think it is very stupid
that someone would make it so you could only transfer photos with usb. if
it shows up as a hard drive you should have to do more or less exactly what
garry said. if you can get a usb thumbdrive to mount on your computer, you
should be able to mount your camera in the same way.

[gentoo-user] Error message on kde startup

2006-01-24 Thread Paul
Hi all,
Recently I had to update about 24 packages, all went well and any config files
were updated. However, I now have a problem when kde starts, I get an
error-kdesktop message saying "The KDE Mediamanager is not running" In the
control Centre - Service Manager under startup Services the KDED Media
Manager has a status of Not Running. If I try to start it manually I just
get a message saying Unable to start service.

I just don't know what to try next - any suggestions?

Thanks

[gentoo-user] Duplicate mouse clicks??

2006-01-25 Thread Paul
Hi all,
Recently I have been having a problem with my usb mouse actions.
In kmail when deleting messages using the bin icon sometimes 2 messages will
be deleted instead of 1.
Sometimes when reading messages another instance will appear in a separate
window.
Sometimes I have to click a number of time to raise the menu.
If I exit out of a program (file exit) the program exits but the desktop icon
underneath gets activated.
It's almost like 2 clicks are happening instead of 1.
KDE is set up for single click.
This has only started happening within the last week.

I'm sure this will turn out to be something simple and stupid that I have
done, but I just can't solve it.
Can anyone HELP please

Thanks to Peter and Yann for your replies.
I have tried another mouse and another USB port which didn't solve the
problem.
By the way I am running KDE 3.4.3 I just can't see why we seem to have this
problem, it's so frustrating.
I am going to try a PS2 mouse at least it might help isolate the problem

I think I might have solved this problem. I have changed the xorg.conf mouse
protocol from "auto" to "PS/2". The mouse is still connected to a USB port
and now appears to work correctly.
How strange, perhaps Peter and Dale could try this and see if it solves their
problem as well.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the help.
I changed the protocol to "ExplorerPS/2" and I now have the wheel working
again.
The question is - What has change in the last few weeks to have caused this
problem. Previously the mouse had been working with the protocol set to
"auto" with no problems.

[gentoo-user] kmail delete problem

2006-01-31 Thread Paul
Hi all,
I am using kmail version 1.8.3 using KDE 3.4.3 and am experiencing multiple
deletes. I click on the waste bin icon to delete the current read message and
read the next one. Sometime I miss reading a message because 2 have been
deleted instead of 1. This happens quite often, also sometimes when I select
a message to read a duplicate copy appears in a new window.
Is anybody else having this sort of problem?
Has anybody been able to fix this?
Any help would be appreciated.

I have added the option line but it has made no difference, I am still
deleting 2 messages sometimes, it seems to be completely random, as does the
problem with the second copy of a message opening in another window. Also I
sometimes click on the terminal program or the personal files icon and 2
instances open.
This is very weird

I noticed that I had 2 UHCI (USB1.1) and 1 EHCI (USB2) ports on my motherboard
and the mouse was connected to the USB2 port. As soon as I connected it to a
USB1.1 all of the double clicking problems have disappeared.

Question
Has something changed recently that has affected USB2??
I would like to report this as bug but without discovering exactly what
changed, it's a bit wishy washy.

Thanks to all who took the trouble to reply and help with this problem.

Thanks for the reply, I think I didn't make the problem clear enough.
I have a usb server running on my network with 2 external disks connected to
it. I can read and write to them using smb://lkg5f.homenet.com/DISK 2/ with
no problems.
I need to mount these drives so that I can run a backup script to backup all
of my gentoo system. I have tried smbmount and mount -t smbfs but even after
reading man mount and smbmount I am still unclear as to the correct format.

I hace tried the above commands with and without username and password but all
I get is the usage message, no indication of an error.
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help
   mount: list mounted filesystems
mount -l : idem, including volume labels
So far the informational part. Next the mounting.
The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.
Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
   mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab
mount device : mount device at the known place
mount directory : mount known device here
mount -t type dev dir: ordinary mount command
Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts
a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.
One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:
   mount --bind olddir newdir
or move a subtree:
   mount --move olddir newdir
A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,
or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid .
Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p passwdfd].
For many more details, say man 8 mount .

I was going to try Harry Putnam's solution of using cifs but it seems to me
that the commands are exactly the same except for the file system.
Any other ideas please

Thanks for the info, I did try the "\" but it didn't work. I have just tried

[gentoo-user] rsync backup problem

2006-03-09 Thread Paul
I am using rsync to backup my home directory to a network drive using the
following command:
rsync -Cav --delete --progress --exclude '*~' --exclude
'.Trash*' /home/paul /mnt/network/home

I am getting errors on each mail from the Mail folder, I think rsync thinks
that each message should be a directory and then fails to copy.
How can I get round this

[gentoo-user] Rsync backup problem2

2006-03-09 Thread Paul
I have mounted a networked usb drive to /mnt/network using the command:
mount -t cifs -o user=paul //lkg7f.homenet.com/disc2 /mnt/network
I then use:
rsync -Cav --delete --progress --exclude '*tmp*' --exclude
'*Trash*' /usr /mnt/network

All files copy with no errors but symlinks always fail with the message:
symlink "/mnt/network/usr/lib/libgstinterfaces-0.8.so.0" ->
"libgstinterfaces-0.8.so.0.1.0" failed: Operation not supported

I am wondering if this is a permissions problem.
My network usb server will not let me have a user called root so I have set
user paul with the 'can do anything' previlege.
The mount and rsync commands are using user root

Can anybody help please.

[gentoo-user] Replacing main harddisk

2005-09-16 Thread Paul
Hi all,

My main harddisk is starting to go, making awful noise and causing the
computer to freeze.
I have another spare disk and I wondered if somebody would list out the
procedure I need to follow to create and format the partitions and to copy
all of the faulty disk contents. Then how to boot from the new disk.
The new disk will need the following partitions:-
/boot ext2
/swap
/ reiserfs

Thanks for any help

I think it may have been a heat problem, since running the disk out of the
case everything seem to work fine. I'm sure your advice will come in handy

Re: [gentoo-user] Replacing main harddisk

2005-09-19 Thread Paul

Well I have carried out the procedure outlined in your message, but I have had
some problems.
When booting the new disc it always failed with a reiserfs problem (I once
rebuilt the tree), after 3 attempts I still had errors so I formated the
partition with ext2, copied all the files and rebooted. IT WORKED.

The only error I have detected is during boot I get a warning "unable to open
an initial console", the screen freezes until x is started.
This doesn't seem to be a big problem but I would like to fix it -- any
ideas

thanks for all who helped

If I do a "dd_rescue" what would I do to get the initial console working?

[gentoo-user] missing console (was Replacing main harddisk)

> > it -- any
> > ideas
Hi,
Since using the new disc all seems to be well except for the warning message
on boot "unable to open an initial console", the screen freezes until x is
started. The computer then works fine nut on shutdown I have a scrolling
message on the screen, something about creating a dir /mnt/fixit --- etc. It
scrolls so fast that I can't read it. I have tried the pause key but the
screen kept on scrolling. I have checked my logs but can't see any mention
of the advise.
How can I
a) stop the screen scrolling on shutdown and stay displayed long enough to
read, or
b) can I force the messages into a file so that I can read them on the next
boot?

Thanks for any help

Hi all.
I just can't seem to get my new mouse working. Up until now I have used a ps2
mouse with no problems.
Now I have a usb one and this is what I've done so far:-
recompiled the kernel to include usb input devices
checked that the mouse is connected using lsusb, this shows Bus 003 Device
002: ID 09da:022b A4 Tech Co., Ltd
My xorg.conf reads
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice"Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice"Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

I can't find any info on what to do to set the new mouse correctly
Can anybody please help

Thanks for the response,
cat /dev/mice - no such file
cat /dev/input/mice and dev/input/mouse0 work but it is my ps2 mouse not the

I now have both mice working so I guess all I need to do now is unplug the ps2

Yes it workd with mplayer but goes straight into the first video ( there are
two on the dvd and a menu.

The media is the same as I am using to write the dvd on that other operating
system.

This is the error using growisofs directly.
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/hdc=/tmp/kde-paul/k3b_image.img
Executing 'builtin_dd if=/tmp/kde-paul/k3b_image.img of=/dev/hdc obs=32k

I am now in the process of writing the image file using a different make of

How silly of me to think that if discs work on windows they should work on

Well the disc completed ok and played ok on the computer but when I tried both
of my dvd players, the picture and sound kept jumping on one and on the other
the disc was not recognised.
Ah well plod on with windows for this task.
I could but another burner and install it in the windows box because nero will
write to multiple discs. Than way I can cut down the time to produce 70 ish
dvd by half.

Sometimes referred to as "virus protection" or "anti-virus" in some

Thanks for the info everyone, but do you understand the agony I am now
suffering at the fact that all disk in my system (including all parts
of my RAID5) are starting on sector 63 and I don't have sufficient
free space (or free time) to repartition them? :) I am really curious
if there are any gains to be made on my own system...

Next time I partition I will definitely pay attention to this, and
feel foolish that I didn't pay attention before. Thanks.

I believe you'll be hearing from Dale in the near future. :)

HAL-in-xorg-in-a-nutshell: If you're using an ordinary desktop system,
you shouldn't need to manually do anything. Just run X as usual and it
should work. You can further customize behavior from inside
Gnome/KDE/whatever using their configuration tools.

Obviously that doesn't always work, at which point you'll then need to
start editing stuff. But I wouldn't bother with it unless you're
unable to get into X for some reason. The first place to look is the X
log file, which contains info about the hardware it auto-detected.
There's also quite a bit of outdated info from when the transition was
taking place, much of it making things sound more complicated than
they really are. (I have not RTFM)

Are you able to get into X or is it failing?

I will admit that if a drive fails I will have to google for the
instructions to proceed from there. When I first set it up, I read the
info, but since I never had to use it I've completely forgotten the
specifics. And in hindsight I should have labeled the disks so I know
more easily which one failed (when one fails). Next time, I'll do it
right. :)

I have a dmcrypt on top of the (software) RAID5, so speed is not so
much of an issue in this case, but reducing physical wear & tear on
the disks would always be a good thing. Maybe someday if I am brave I
will try it... but probably not until I made a full backup, just in
case.

Here you can download ebuilds for all previous versions and then put
it in your local overlay:

http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/media-gfx/imagemagick/?hideattic=0

Although it looks like 6.4.7.0 was never in portage. You might be able
to take an ebuild from a version near that one and simply rename it to
the version you want.

Some lvm tools/packages have replaced others that don't have "lvm" in
the name, so maybe that's what you have seen. They aren't solely used

I use the kde overlay and the unmask/keywords files it contains. The
only thing I had to do manually was unmask newest version of libmsn.
After that it all emerged in one try.

I tried it again in KDE 4.4, and other than virtuoso taking 100% with

I disabled it after a couple hours of indexing because it was already

800MHz but when I increased to 8 GB I had to lower speed to something
like 533 MHz otherwise system was very unstable. In my case Intel Core

Have you tried making an ebuild for 1.16 and putting it in /usr/local/portage

That way you won't be fighting with portage about what version to install.

[gentoo-user] Advice/best practices for a new Gentoo installation

2010-02-26 Thread Paul Hartman
Hi, I'm building a new personal computer. I respect the opinion and
experience of the people on this list and am interested in anyone's
advice on the best way to set up my new Gentoo installation. Things
that you say "I wish I set mine up this way the first time..." or have
learned from experience how to do it right the first time already. :)

Some topics I'm thinking about (comments welcome):
- be aware of cylinder boundaries when partitioning (thanks to the
recent thread)
- utilizing device labels and/or volume labels instead of hoping
/dev/sda stays /dev/sda always
- initrd - I've never used one, but maybe it's needed if root is on
software RAID?
- grub/kernel parameter tips and tricks... i'm already using uvesafb,
and don't dual-boot with MSWin or anything, just Gentoo
- better partitioning scheme than my current root, boot, home (need
portage on its own, maybe /var as well?)
- some kind of small linux emergency/recovery partition? equivalent to
a liveCD maybe.
- best filesystem for portage? something compressed or with small
cluster size maybe.
- SSD vs 1rpm vs big-and-cheap hard drive for rootfs/system files.
I lean toward the latter since RAM caches it anyway.
- omit/reduce number of reserved-for-root blocks on partitions where
it's not necessary.
- I have never used LVM and don't really know about it. Should I use
it? will it make life easier someday? or more difficult?
- Is RAID5 still a good balance for disk cost vs usable space vs data
safety? I can't/don't want to pay for full mirroring of all disks.

Or any other tips that apply to things which are difficult to change
once the system is in use.

It will be ~amd64 Gentoo using Intel Core i7 920 with 12GiB RAM. No
disks have been purchased yet.

Thanks

I think if you don't have support for those protocols the chances of a
program using them is probably zero. :) FWIW i get the exact same
messages. I don't think it is meaningful.

I use a similar command (omitting all the unix sockets stuff): netstat
-lnp --inet

With regard to your original problem, try to edit the cvsd.conf and
specify an actual IP address to listen on (instead of 0.0.0.0 or * or
however it is defined there) and see if that helps.

To make ALSA show the proper controls for my sound card I had to tell
it which model I'm using /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf:

options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

Look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt to
see the list of models. Hopefully then it will show things appropriate
to yours.

I decided on a hard drive for the primary disk rather than SSD. For a
combination of size (1TB), performance (according to benchmarks) and
price (according to my pockets) I chose a Samsung HD103SJ (7200rpm,
1TB, 32MB cache, 2x500gb platters) drive which appears to have great
overall performance and low operating temperatures.

I haven't received the disks yet so for now I'm just playing with an
old spare drive and installed Windows 7 (trial) for
configuring/testing the overclock settings since all of the
motherboard tools are in Windows only. Once I have it running fast &
cool, it's Gentoo time!

I also tried the Gentoo LiveDVD 10.1, written to a USB flash drive
(with unetbootin), and it worked great. I had the PC hooked up to my
TV with HDMI and it used proper 16:9 resolution, got DHCP address
automatically and everything seemed to simply work properly. It will
be great to use Konsole and Firefox during install, compared to having
a 80x25 terminal like I did many years ago in my last install. Good
job to the LiveDVD team!

Depending on your specific USB device you may need to edit UDEV rules
to set proper permissions on the device node. For example I had to do
that for normal users to read my digital camera.

I don't use gvfs (or gnome) but I just tried to emerge with the same

That's how I use it. I do oldconfig as a kind of "kernel config diff"
and then follow it by menuconfig and a quick browsing of the critical
settings to make sure they look sane enough to boot. As long as it
boots and supports my disks and filesystems I can sort out any minor
settings/module changes after that.

In the old days, when Flash and Java was only available as 32-bit
plug-ins, people also ran 32-bit versions of their browsers (in order
to be able to use those plug-ins). In the time since then, we had
nspluginwrapper to allow 32-bit plug-ins in 64-bit browsers, and now
we have native 64-bit plug-ins. I guess the 32-bit option is still
there for people who are still using the old set-up and haven't gone
to a totally 64-bit browser yet.

It should survive unmount and remount. The mount options should only
control who is allowed to mount it, not who can use it once it is
mounted. (Filesystems that don't understand the concept of permissions
might have some mount option to force a certain umask but normal linux
filesystems don't need it)

[gentoo-user] openssh-5.4 upgrade warning for publickey users

2010-03-12 Thread Paul Hartman
Just a quick note for publickey-only sshd users that if you upgrade to
openssh 5.4 the AuthorizedKeysFile entry in sshd_config may need to be
updated or else you won't be able to login to your system.

If you have:
AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys
(which is the default example in the config file)

change it to this:
AuthorizedKeysFile %h/.ssh/authorized_keys

and then restart sshd.

Thanks to Doktor Notor who posted the solution on bugzilla.

I think generally in portage tilde means "about". For example if you
want to mask ~foo-1.00 it will also cover foo-1.00-r1 etc. rather than
mask >=foo-1.0.0 and

There was a distfiles mirror that would always hang and timeout for

instantly and tries a different server. Maybe you could do the same

You have to find and download the windows drivers for your device and
extract the firmware out of them, then rename it and put it in
/lib/firmware. See here:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/orinoco#device_firmware

A google search turned up this firmware link:

I remember reading something recently (within the last year?) about
smartmontools causing disks to go offline unnecessarily in some
situation, i think due to a bug in the smart tools. I don't know if
it's a certain version of smartmontools or combination of that and

In Windows XP it was called "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". It
could be run from the Windows install CD or maybe it was installed as
well. You ran it on the source machine, then on the target machine and
it did its magic. It even carried over individual apps settings for

I never heard of it before, but there's an extensive description in

It sounds like it's a way of the BIOS authenticating your kernel
hasn't been altered before allowing the system to boot. Maybe I'm

I really don't understand what it means, but the "timeout", "hard

I really don't know the potential implications of disabling MSI or
APIC, but in /proc/interrupts I do see AHCI related to both MSI and
APIC rows. So at least I know they are active right now.

Temperatures in my system are good, hddtemp says the drive in question
is 21C degrees right now.

Another possibility is that I need to increase voltage on the
motherboard, since it is running 6 hdd's and 1 DVD-ROM. I'll have to
research to see which voltage is related to this. (X58 motherboard)

Thanks in advance if anyone has any knowledge about this, otherwise I
go to trial-and-hopefully-no-error mode. :)

AFAIK Nvidia split the vdpau off into libvdpau late last year
sometime. On my system I use both nvidia-drivers and libvdpau without
issue. libvdpau provides libvdpau.so while nvidia-drivers provides
libvdpau_nvidia.so

Here are my versions:

x11-libs/libvdpau-0.3-r2
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-195.36.15

Are you using older versions? I use ~amd64 so maybe if you run stable
it has the older versions.

Well, I was thinking more about something like alteriong IOH/ICH
voltage, or whichever voltage powers the SATA controllers. It has 12
SATA headers on this motherboard but I don't know how much it can
realistically handle at once. Hopefully all of my disks. :)
