[gentoo-user] OT: virtual keyboard and DM
Can anyone recommend a virtual keyboard and DM that works on a HiDPI screen? I have a Microsoft surface4 and have tried sddm and lightdm with xkbd, matchbox-keyboard and florence and cant seem to get a working combination. They are all too small and don't seem to work nicely or able to be properly controlled. BillK

You can also try adjusting the display properties of the different windowing toolkits. That may help more. You should also file bugs with all of the programs you tried should you find the time. [gentoo-user] KDE and pulseaudio.
I haven't read all the vomit in /var/tmp/portage yet but the basic pattern seems to be: Pulseaudio makes some sensible yet incompatible upgrades -> kde was excessively intertwined with a beta version of pulseaudio -> all of KDE depended on that one library, -> all of KDE fails. I need Konsole, Akregator, sometimes konqueror (best available file manager), had to -kde libreoffice to get that back... So what gives here, anyone have an ETA on getting this working again? -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.

You shouldn't need the old kde USE flag anymore. Remove it from any of your packages in /etc/portage/, and your make.conf, unless you have a specific reason for wanting it there. Enable USE="plasma" instead for optional KDE plasma addons. If you have mixed stable and testing arch, then it'll take some digging or patience to get your problem resolved. On a stable system here, pulseaudio-11.1-r1 installs without conflicts and works. -- Regards, Mick signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
[gentoo-user] net-fs/samba 4.5.16 compile fail
Hi, Discovered an issue when trying to compile net-fs/samba-4.5.16. Looks like it involves the WAF package configuration process and/or rpcgen. Problem is with the source files trying to "#include " (sm_notify.c is the first the fail), the location of the glibc SunRPC headers when it doesn't exist. Those headers actually live in "" but for whatever reason the build wasn't including it, or including "-I /usr/include/tiprc" during the build. Curiously, WAF shows that it didn't find the rpc headers (at least form my quick perusal through the build logs), but the build is still doing the "#include". Quick fix is: $ CFLAGS "-I/usr/include/tirpc -Wl,-ltirpc" emerge -1v samba BTW, no thanks to the a particular scold and martinet in #gentoo named "kurly" who seemed to be itching to kick/silence for asking simple questions (which he of course did). People like that shouldn't have ops, IMHO. - Jim
[gentoo-user] scanner problem
My scanner -- Epson Perfection V550 Photo -- is suddenly not detected : when I enter 'xsane' (via the menu or Alt-F2), it says "no devices available". I last used it without any problem 180626. Since then, I've updated my kernel & some other pkgs. I've checked the USB physical connection ; the scanner 'ready' light is on. I've remerged 'xsane' & 'sane-backends' & rebooted. Following my notes, I've done : root:500 ~> sane-find-scanner ... found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x013b [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:004 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. # It may or may not be supported by SANE. # Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. root:501 ~> scanimage -L device `epkowa:interpreter:001:004' is a Epson Perfection V550 Photo flatbed scanner The first time I ran these commands (I don't remember which), the scanner itself made the noises it usually does when starting. This model needs a driver which is not included in 'sane-backends' & which I downloaded from Nvidia & installed when I got the scanner 2017. The 'epkowa' driver is installed : root:505 ~> locate epkowa /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-epkowa.la /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1 /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1.0.15 /usr/lib64/sane/archive/libsane-epkowa.la /usr/lib64/sane/archive/libsane-epkowa.so.1 /usr/lib64/sane/archive/libsane-epkowa.so.1.0.15 My user is a member of the 'scanner' group : scanner:x:104:purslow I am puzzled : does anyone have a suggestion what to do next ? -- ,, SUPPORT ___//___, Philip Webb ELECTRIC /] [] [] [] [] []| Cities Centre, University of Toronto TRANSIT`-O--O---' purslowatchassdotutorontodotca
