ifconfig -a lists all interfaces present.

Unless you added net.ifnames=0 to your kernel options, you will be using
the new(ish) predictable network interface names, see

and

  /usr/portage/distfiles/libhdhomerun_20140121.tgz is all of 47,685
bytes. It provides a ***COMMAND LINE INTERFACE***. I happen to be a
"command line commando"" Using that command line interface, I've rigged
up a bash script and a text config file that allows me to fire up the
local CBC station, on tuner 0, with the command...

tv 0 cbc

Similarly, I can launch the local CTV station with the command

tv 0 ctv

The other option is to "save 47,685 bytes" and emerge MythTV instead

USE="mysql" emerge -pv mythtv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

The module above probably comes from the pkg below:

Looks like the pkg I suggested installing was wrong. Sorry about that.

Np, at first I thought it should be in this package. I tried to emerge
some packages which looked as if they might contain the module, to no avail.

The portage tree doesn't seem to have a Net-IMAP-Client pkg:
ls -1d /usr/portage/dev-perl/Net-IMAP*
/usr/portage/dev-perl/Net-IMAP-Simple
/usr/portage/dev-perl/Net-IMAP-Simple-SSL

Someone else might have an idea for you.

Sorry.

If anything fails, I might be able to install it from cpan or so. Is
there anything special to consider when doing this on Gentoo?

You mean "A's" or more accurately "A" ... (grin).

Otherwise, why do Gentooers say 'dependency' when they mean 'requirement' ?
-- eg above, while Zip is not required for Gcc or Seamonkey or VICE VERSA,
Zip could hardly depend on Seamonkey, but Seamonkey could require it.

Making sense of Portage output + dox is difficult enough, as it is.

Nope. Certainly not "A's" (ugh!), and not "A" either, since the only
number that's singular is 1. (You wouldn't say "my fruit bowl's empty -

Of course I don't have any eth0 interface. What I have are:

enp2s0
lo
sit0
wlp1s0

What I am about to do:
Update my /etc/conf.d/net like so:

config_enp2s0="dhcp"
config_lo="dhcp"
config_sit0="dhcp"
config_wlp1s0="dhcp"

cd /etc/init.d
ln -s net.enp2s0 net.sit0 net.wlp1s0

rm /etc/init.d/net.eth0

rc-update del net.eth0 default

rc-update add net.enp2s0 sit0 wlp1s0 default

Please let me know if you find these steps correct. Thanks

It's a general Linux thing, not only Gentoo.

Seamonkey depends on zip, so zip is a dependency of Seamonkey. In this
context dependency is a synonym of requirement, unlike the political
context.

Interfaces in init.d should each be symlinked to net.lo. But if you put
all interfaces in init.d openrc will try to start all of them. Is that
what you really want? If you have both wired and wireless interfaces, it
is usual to use a network manager to control them.

[gentoo-user] new linux router

2015-03-04 Thread James
Hello,

It's time to build a new router. Surely, I would just like to
purchase hardware and run a minimized or embedded gentoo on it
along with iptables and a few other packages. But, I got to reading
and well it seems much has changed. Dansguardian is deprecated?
If I add protection above layer 3, what is the best route (pun intended)
to protect some winblows systems? And I need the ability to dynamically
block some gaming sites (kids playing too many hours of video).

Then I read about NFtables... [1]
And there is more. So, being a bit busy what would folks recommend
for purchase (I really do not need another project at this time)?
I've used routers with ebtables in the past too.

I'd like to be able to download some open source linux to the router
hardware if updates and pathces are not maintained by the vendor?
That way I do not purchase something that is to be abandoned in
a few years by the vendor.

It's just a small home/office so 3x100Mb E would be fine, but GigE
ports would be better. I'm flexible on the CPU/arch of the hardware,
so all discussion and suggestions are welcome. In an idealized world
I'd pay extra for a gentoo_derivative based router; but all I find
is the WRT, devil_linux and such, nothing really cool and interesting.

Anyone used lilblue or pentoo as the basis for a firewalled_router?

A purchase is what I really want, but some hacking, if absolutely
necessary, would be ok too. Ideas?

curiously,
James

You also do not need to define dhcp for enp2s0, because it will be used by
default.

You only need this if you intend to set up and use IPv6 through an IPv4
tunnel. Most people won't need this.

Now that you're connected, or should I say BEFORE you got connected, you
should also consider configuring a firewall for your IPv4 (and/or IPv6)
network.

My goal here is to have something in case all of my online backup
repositories (in various geographical locations) get hacked. That's
the only plausible scenario I can think of that would result in me
losing my data and I'd like to protect against it. Would any kind of
disconnectable external drive be appropriate for this? Would tape be
the best choice?

[gentoo-user] {OT} reliable USB extender?

I need to connect a Zebra LP2844 USB label printer at about 35 feet

Are you _required_ to use USB?

If I were you, I'd stick an an Ethernet connected RS232 port widget on
the printer and talk to it via Ethernet.

OTOH, if it's only 35 feet, you could just run a serial cable to it
(you might need to add a serial port to your host).

The LP2844 has a serial port, right?

Using USB for anything other than keyboard and mouse is asking for
trouble. Due to MS/Intel's backing, and a few other historical
accidents, USB beat out _far_ better options like Firewire and gets
used/abused for all sorts of things for which it's not really
appropriate. But, it's still a horrible protocol and oughtn't be used
for anything where the Microsoft motto of "it sort of works most of
the time" isn't good enough.

These devices only do USB 1.1. Have you considered a USB repeater cable
or two. Some of those are very good, I know someone who has run webcams
over greater distances using them.

oh not again of that myth. Firewire was not better. And it is not

The solution is of course a cheap print server. There are even very
cheap ones who can do ethernet&wireless.

Now this is exactly what I'm looking for; a vendor light weight router
and I can put linux on (preferable gentoo) in case the vendor does
not offer updated images or stay up with patches and such.

Very, Very cool! Do you own one? Have you or another tried it?
Have you put gentoo on it?

32 gigabyte USB keys are around $20 CDN, probably less in US dollars.
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=11_180_181&item_id=058767

  128 gigabyte keys for $80
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=11_180_181&item_id=069903

256 and 512 gigabyte capacities are also available, but they're more
expensive. Format a USB key as ext2fs, and it'll handle permissions and
UID's properly.

Most USB-Sticks are cheap consumer products and IMHO not very reliable.
I had several faulty stick over the years. If you plan to use
USB-Sticks for your backups then buy two of them from different vendors
and copy your data to both of them.

Very interesting thread, as I have not been hacking on routers
for a few years, since my consulting gig ended.

I am going to get back to some router hacking, as soon as some of the
multi_core Arm64 bit SOC chips are affordable with some very
fast ram (ddr 3,4,5). It's taking forever for those chips
to become available at reasonable street pricing. I'm tired
of the run of the mill embedded micros running embedded linux.

Besides, my home office network is meager on the bandwidth needs
at this time.

Yep. I'm too lazy to expend the energy to figure it out, but,
there's only a few folks hacking on mips 64 these days who
would bother to post to the gentoo_wiki. Not a big deal.

It would seem that this is a backup to a backup. I think I read earlier
that the OP already has backups but just wants more backups just in
case. I guess one can never really have to much, I guess.
