Hi, ECharts community team. Glad your guys bringing the project to Apache. SkyWalking 's next release will use some ECharts charts for our APM visualization. Numerical data may be presented in dots, lines, or bars, to visually communicate a quantitative message. Effective visualization helps users to analyze data . It makes complex data more readable, understandable.[1] Now data visualization concerns mainly about presentation and propagation in web, ECharts uses JavaScript as its basic programing language. It brings great compatibility across multiple platforms, not only in web browsers, but also in mobile Apps via embedded web engine or in backend environment via the techniques of headless browser. === Rationale === ECharts encapsulates the underlying data transformation, control flow, visual encoding and rendering, receiving the visualization requirements with declarative language, and produces interactive charts and components. So ECharts enables users to describe data and settings with declarative language, which lowers the barrier but without losing the power, and benefit to transfer and store. * Configurable Interactions: ECharts has provided plenty of interactions and aims at providing more. Both human interactions and the interactions with upper program are supported and can be configurable. * Large Data: Although the browser environment and JavaScript bring some performance limits in visualizing large data or performing animations, ECharts have been adopting various optimization techniques to rise the upper limit of the amount of data that it can process, and keep improving the fluency of interactions and animations. * Cross-Platform: The underlying render engine of ECharts can be switched between HTMLCanvas, SVG, or VML, which provides good compatibility and brings opportunities to optimize performance according to different platform and usage scenarios. Besides, ECharts can also works in backend environment via headless techniques. ECharts can be created using headless browsers to pregenerate reports on more powerful machines for better performance on resource-limited devices *Extension and Customization: ECharts provides extension mechanisms to make new types of chart and components, adopt other layout algorithms, or even adopt other render techniques. Various developers have contributed different types of extensions based on ECharts.[2] === Current Status === ECharts has been an open source project on GitHub[3] since 2013. Need `mvn submodule` in `mvn release:perform` step
Hi incubator, I am facing some issues when I do the SkyWalking first release. I am following this document http://www.apache.org/dev/publishing-maven-artifacts.html#dev-env . But an error occurs in step 4-STAGE THE RELEASE FOR A VOTE. The reason of this is SkyWalking is using `git submodule` feature, so after `git clone`, need to run `git submodule init` and `git submodule update`, but in `mvn release:perform`, don't execute this in default. I need some helps and guides about how to run these `submodule` commands. Who can help us? Or where should I ask? Thanks. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking creator and PPMC member
[VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) 5.0.0-alpha

From my point of view, it gives me a better feeling that the PPMC knows the steps required to have a valid release go out the door, what checks have to be done. So I encourage PPMC members to vote here, please don't discourage it. John On Fri, Mar 23, 2018 at 10:38 AM Sheng Wu wrote: > Xin > > You have already voted in SkyWalking dev mail list. Give a speech about Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) in QCon Beijing 2018
Hi IPMC, I have been invited and are going to give a speech about Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) in QCon Beijing 2018. The subject is `the Development of SkyWalking, from a small project into global community`. Most things in that speech will be about the project itself, and its development, such as, refactor and rewrite 4 times in 2 years, work in global community with Zipkin, CNCF OpenTracing, Distributed tracing workshop, etc. And of course, will mention Chinese Apache projects(including TLP and Incubating), and show our honor to be part of them. I will notice every time, I mention the project with `(incubating)` or `??`(incubating in Chinese). I send this mail to inform the IPMC, in case there are others things I should take care. Hope IPMC community gives me some advices to do so. Here is QCon page: https://2018.qconbeijing.com/presentation/445 Aprial 20th, 2018, Beijing. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking original creator and PPMC member

Re: [DISCUSS] Absent mentors
+1 for the needs of active mentors. As a new podling project PPMC, I and our project committers learn a lot from out mentors about the Apache way. The mentor and communication stuffs need a lot of time, so I totally agree, active mentors are very important for podling project members. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking original creator and PPMC member -- Original -- From: "Julian Hyde"; Date: Thu, Mar 29, 2018 06:20 AM To: "general"; Subject: [DISCUSS] Absent mentors The incubator has an ongoing problem with lack of mentor engagement. Mentors are a crucial component of the incubation process. Incubation is the time when projects learn the Apache Way, and they cannot learn in a vacuum. I??d like to discuss possible solutions to this problem. I??d like to hear from both podlings (PPMC members) and from IPMC members. (By the way, it??s not just a problem for podlings. As a mentor, I am demoralized when I feel my co-mentors are not pulling their weight, and I get a little closer to burn-out.) How to detect deadbeat mentors? One solution that has been discussed before is counting mentor sign-offs on podlings?? quarterly reports. Any project that received one or two sign-offs was deemed to be doing just fine. This is an imperfect metric. Another remedy is to require podlings to be proactive: if they are not receiving adequate supervision, they should reach out to the IPMC and demand a change in mentors. The problem is, podlings have by definition not been through incubation before, so do not know what to expect. They don??t want to rock the boat. I propose another solution. Let??s add a question to the podling report template, as follows: > Have your mentors been helpful and responsive? If not, describe what advice > or help > you needed, or need: It isn't too onerous for the podling, and only embarrasses mentors who deserve to be embarrassed. What to do about deadbeat mentors? The current thinking is that every project should have three mentors, and if at least one of them is active, that??s OK. I think that the ??rule of 3?? actually makes the problem worse. It??s difficult to find three motivated individuals (or find enough work for them to do), so a podling will inevitably have one or two inactive mentors. It has become the norm that most mentors are inactive. I propose that we get rid of the rule of 3. If mentors are not active, they should be encouraged to step down, and if they don??t, the IPMC should remove them. If this leaves the podling with zero or one mentors, then IPMC can step in and appoint new mentors. A podling with two active mentors is probably doing just fine. Is this problem as serious as I think it is? Would my proposed solutions help? Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version5.0.0-alpha(3rd round)
Hi sebb, I see your point, that is why we provide the build document[1] if you want to build from GitHub tag. Git submodules are used in our project for binding multi repos. The source codes tar is provided by running some source code release process, by following project document[2] and script [3]. And for `dependency-reduced-pom.xml`, it is generated in building the project, when we run build and tar source code. If you think we should not include it, I think we can add an exclusion in next release. Is that good enough for you? Hi John > Sheng, do you know if this checkout is documented somewhere? That checkout command should work form your log and my experience. We provided a different document : https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/blob/v5.0.0-alpha/docs/en/How-to-build.md#build-from-github . The result is same, the reason we put documents in that way is, some one in our community is using GUI tool, such as source tree. Typically when we see a source release, its tied to a single git repo. Generating the source release in this case involves a special type of git checkout, which IMHO is just fine. Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version5.0.0-alpha(3rdround)
Hi Sebb. I also want to make this more clear, since several people asked before. But the tag/release pages from GitHub, have no place to write build notice. Do you have any suggestion? And for using git submodules, there are several requirements, we didn't use that from beginning. 1. SkyWalking community are building nodejs, C#, golang sdk/agent based on SkyWalking protocol, that is why SkyWalking protocol repo existed. 2. SkyWalking UI is very complex, and no Java tech stack related. The ci, tests are all Nodejs and react related. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking original creator and PPMC member -- Original -- From: "sebb"; Date: Sun, Apr 1, 2018 09:31 PM To: "general"; Subject: Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version5.0.0-alpha(3rdround) Agreed that the Zip/Clone URLs on the GitHub page are not a canonical source. Hi Sebb Even more, I and SkyWalking community welcome you to help us, your English and English document experiences are much better. Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-alpha(3rd round)
Now, we run dependencies by this way: 1) remove the direct dev dependencies manually 2) run `npm-license-crawler --dependencies --relativeLicensePath --csv license.csv`. 3) Run https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/blob/master/tools/releasing/generate-ui-depedencies.py script 4) Do some manual works. By those, we also think it is not cool. I have already contact ECharts(incubating) team leader for some helps in nodejs field. I already added an issue to track this: https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/issues/1013 We intend to fix this in beta release. Also if anyone in Apache community know nodejs/react/webpack well, please help us about this. [ANNOUNCE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-alpha
Hi all, Apache SkyWalking (incubating) Team is glad to announce the first release of Apache SkyWalking Incubating 5.0.0-alpha SkyWalking: APM (application performance monitor) tool for distributed systems, especially designed for microservices, cloud native and container-based (Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos) architectures. Underlying technology is a distributed tracing system. Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision making process have stabilized in a manner consistent with other successful ASF projects. While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection of the completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate that the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking original creator and PPMC member

Are MySQL driver and MySQL protocol allowed in distribution?
Hi, Someone asked whether could provide a mysql based storage implemention for SKyWalking. I am aware mysql driver is under GPL, so should not be allowed, right? Then how about the mysql protocol? If they implement the codes by themself, because the storage required a few features compared to the real driver. Thanks Sheng Wu

Re: Are MySQL driver and MySQL protocol allowed in distribution?
Yes, MySQL will be an optional feature. And only required by a few people. So, asking them to download is good enough. I will share this solution to the community. This is the policy that I think applies here: http://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html#optional Does the product work without MySQL? It sounds like that this would be an optional storage method, so depending on it would be fine. The uses who want to use MySQL will have to download the driver (and accept the terms of its license). Is an incubating project allowed to release if it didn't follow Apache way.
Hi everyone, I have to ask this, because some friends asked me today. Apache Weex (incubating) joined the Incubator at 2016-11-30, according to status page[1]. But someone talks to me about there is no Apache release since then, but instead, the project is still releasing under `com.taobao.android`[2], and the Apache repo includes new tags[3]. And I can't tell whether the releases are from Apache GitHub tags, but the time match. Also their Apache website includes these releases changelogs[4], also still can't be sure about matching the tag by reviewing the page. The question are: 1. Are this releases allowed? Since it is still an incubating project, maybe YES? 2. Should a project to do so, even it is allowed? From my experience, this is very strange to me. Because I am seeing other incubating projects are doing the Apache release right after they join the incubator. By being an Apache incubating project, most important, should learn to follow Apache way to govern project. But didn't release in that way(vote, check, release) didn't seem right to me. Anyway, those are questions I can't answer. So could someone help? I want to make sure that, I give the right answers. Hi, I'm Adam, who is a committer of Weex??maybe I can clarify the confusion of Weex's release process. Actually, Weex released its first version in Apache on 2017-06-08, after that, we faced some license problems. Facebook's BSD+Patents license was added to Category X[1] and Weex had some dependencies which were using that license, including our layout engine Yoga[2] (though its newest version has changed to MIT). Some committers found the issue[3] and started working on a new layout engine, it was a massive work and took more time than we expected, fortunately it was nearly done. Weex will release next version in May. During that time, the community building and development should be continued, so we added some tags and some "feature notes" to the community, we will make sure they are clearly labeled as non-Apache releases. Sorry to make you confused. Hi Stian I appreciate your very detail review for our release. Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-beta2[RC1]
Hi Justin. We used to have the same question, too. We discussed with ant-design community, here are their feedbacks could be found in GitHub. 1. The codebase of those fonts are here: ant-design/antd-init . They declared that free to use from their README[1]. 2. For 100% confirm, our PMC submit an issue[2], their official member confirmed in MIT. Is this good enough? How are those fonts licensed? It's not clear looking at the ant design project that the fonts are under the same license as the ant design code. In fact AFAICS the fonts are not included in that project. If this question can be answered I'll reconsider my vote. After the incubation is further along, a bit more formality is a good idea. At that point, have a vote, proclaim a result and be done. There is no firm line that determines when more formality is a good thing. As a project leaves incubation, there is an opportunity to tune the PMC and committer membership one last time. Commonly a few people will drop out at that time due to constraints on their time. On Sat, Jul 14, 2018 at 9:40 AM ???? [Question] Whimsy check about Image and website of SkyWalking project
Hi IPMC I have two questions 1. SkyWalking website is here[1], which already includes the links of Apache required. Such as: Apache website, donate, mail list, etc. But the whimsy check result[2] said no. 2. The other question is, project should include its log in here[3], but I didn't find the way to upload it. How should I do that? Thanks. [1] http://skywalking.apache.org/ [2] https://whimsy.apache.org/pods/project/skywalking [3] https://www.apache.org/img/ -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking

Re: [PROPOSAL] Zipkin for Apache Incubator
It is glad to see my and SkyWalking's good friend, Zipkin and its community to start their Apache journey. We have a lot of connections in open source world, even shared the same and first China meetup in Beijing. Even I can't be project mentor, I will try my best to help the Zipkin community, based my experiences of Apache SkyWalking. Welcome many good friends in Zipkin community. ------ Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking -- Original -- From: "adrian.f.cole"; Date: Fri, Aug 17, 2018 05:29 PM To: "general"; Subject: [PROPOSAL] Zipkin for Apache Incubator I would like to propose Zipkin as an Apache Incubator project. The text of the proposal can be found below as well as on the Incubator wiki: https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/ZipkinProposal I believe we should have 3 mentors.. currently we have 2 (plus Wu Sheng and I who are familiar but not mentor-grade :P). If another person can volunteer to mentor us, would be sweet. -Adrian = Abstract = Zipkin is a distributed tracing system. It helps gather timing data needed to troubleshoot latency problems in microservice architectures. It manages both the collection and lookup of this data. Zipkin??s design is based on the Google Dapper paper. = Proposal = Zipkin provides a defined data model and payload type for distributed trace data collection. It also provides an UI and http api for querying the data. Its server implements this api and includes abstractions for storage and transport of trace payloads. The combination of these parts avoid lock-in to a specific tracing backend. For example, Zipkin includes integration with different open source storage mechanisms like Apache Cassandra and Elasticsearch. It also includes bridges to convert collected data and forward it to service offerings such as Amazon X-Ray and Google Stackdriver. Ecosystem offering extend this portability further. While primarily focused on the system, Zipkin also includes tracing libraries which applications use to report timing information. Zipkin's core organization includes tracer libraries written in Java, Javascript, Go, PHP and Ruby. These libraries use the formats mentioned above to report data, as well "B3" which is a header format needed to send trace identifiers along with production requests. Many Zipkin libraries can also send data directly to other services such as Amazon X-Ray and Google Stackdriver, skipping any Zipkin infrastructure. There are also more Zipkin tracing libraries outside the core organization than inside it. This is due to the "OpenZipkin" culture of promoting ecosystem work. = Background = Zipkin began in 2012 at Twitter during a time they were investigating performance problems underlying the "fail whale" seen by users. The name Zipkin is from the Turkish word for harpoon: the harpoon that will kill the failures! Incidentally, Zipkin was not the first tracing system, it had roots in a former system at Twitter named BigBrotherBird. It is due to BigBrotherBird that the de-facto tracing headers we still use today include the prefix "X-B3". In 2015, a community of users noticed the project was not healthy in so far as it hadn't progressed and often didn't accept pull requests, and the Cassandra backend was stuck on an unmaintained library. For example, the Apache Incubator H-Trace project started in some ways as a reaction to the inability to customize the code. The root cause of this was Twitter moving to internal storage (Manhattan) and also the project not being managed as a product. By mid 2015, the community regrouped as OpenZipkin and the codebase moved from Twitter to an org also named OpenZipkin. This led to fast progress on concerns including initially a server rewrite and Docker based deployment. In 2018, the second version of the data model completed, and along the way, many new libraries became standard, including javascript, golang and PHP. The community is dramatically larger than 2015, and Zipkin remains the most popular tracing system despite heavy competition. = Rationale = Zipkin is a de-facto distributed tracing system, which is more important as architectures become more fine grained due to popularity of microservice or even serverless architectures. Applications transition to use more complex communication including asynchronous code and service mesh, increasing the need for tools that visualize the behavior of requests as they map across an architecture. Zipkin's server is focused only on distributed tracing. It is meant to be used alongside existing logging and metrics systems. Generally, the community optimizes brown field concerns such as interop over breaking changes such as experimental features. The combination of code and community make Zipkin a safe and easier choice for various sites to introduce or grow their observability practice. = Initial Goals = The initial go

[VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-RC2
Hi All, This is a call for vote to release Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) version 5.0.0-RC2. The Apache SkyWalking community has tested, voted and approved the proposed release of Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) 5.0.0-RC2 We now kindly request the Incubator PMC members review and vote on this incubator release. SkyWalking: APM (application performance monitor) tool for distributed systems, especially designed for microservices, cloud native and container-based (Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos) architectures. Underlying technology is a distributed tracing system. Last RC release broke in IPMC vote, because our source release LICENSE and NOTICE have issues[1], which are fixed in this release. Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-RC2
Hi, Justin First of all, yes, in this source release, the link is old. But because, I think only license and notice are blocks. I only update and fix these. For the guide, they are already fixed in codebase, just not in this release. Considering it is not block. Check our two major code branches, - master https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking - 5.x https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/tree/5.x The compile guide pointer in readme file is already the related path. When next routine release, it will be included, at the end of Sep. Is that OK? Try to think like a user of this software they download it and want to compile it, they read instructions, are asked to follow a link (annoying) and then the link gives a 404, at this point some of them are going to give up and you will never hear from them again. Sure some may be able to find How-to-build.md in the docs and get it working but their first experience of the project is not ideal. Releases need to include simple easy to follow instructions on how to build. Those instruction may changed form release to release so pointing people to URLs is not helpful. What for instance if you want to compile an older version and the URL only has instructions for the most recent version? I checked: - incubating in name - signatures and hashes good - DISCLAIMER exists - LICENSE and NOTICE good - no unexpected binary files - all source files have ASF headers - unable to build from source Thanks for fixing the license issue, however you also need to fix it in the binary release. Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-RC2
Hi, Justin, First of all, there is a direct link to that build page, in README of master and 5.x branches. See https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking#compiling-project We have both links to document and compiling guide. Besides that, because many users are using git clone tag as sources too, although in Apache, we consider our source tar only. But in the community, they really use in another way, in our github issue, many compiling issue, even after we put this detailed guide. Background story is, in our project repository, we are using git submodule, so we need the guide as detailed as possible. Such as git submodule init, git submodule update, etc. That is why we build a long guide abouy how to build for convenience users. I don??t think this is an improvement. So now I need to stop looking at the terminal, open up a browser, goto GitHub and look at the README.md there. Re: [VOTE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-RC2
We already only post source tar link in website. They are potential developers, because they code plugins for many open source or commercial libs. > Sounds to me like it's easier to compile official releases and that you > should be trying to release more often perhaps? Actually, yes. We discussed before in our community. We didn't want to release too often, like 1-2 weeks per releaae. Because that will burn the dev and ipmc people to do vote and check again and again. ?9?8 So we keep the release per 1 or 2 months. And let developer to build by themself. Btw, they perfer GitHub because it is easier to pull request new plugin and bug fix. Why would your users want to use unreleased source code? Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision making process have stabilized in a manner consistent with other successful ASF projects. I doubt that you vote on everyone of your nightly or snapshot releases at the PMC level and hence they can NOT be considered a proper ASF release. Coming back to your original question: convince binaries simply means binaries that PMC had a chance to vote on (just like they do for the source release). Once PMC votes on a set of binary artifacts they are allowed to be distributed as part of the release and they are called "convenience binaries". [ANNOUNCE] Release Apache SkyWalking (incubating) version 5.0.0-GA
Hi all, Apache SkyWalking (incubating) Team is glad to announce the first release of Apache SkyWalking Incubating 5.0.0-GA. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking
[Question] Is a mirror website of skywalking project allowed?
Hi, SkyWalking has official Apache website[1], also SkyWalking has another website[2] which uses the same codebases of our Apache website(same content), but hosted in GitHub(not a redirect). I want to ask, is this allowed by Apache? We are talking about graduation now, our mentor Mick suggests us to ask at here. IoTDB is a database for managing large amounts of time series data from IoT sensors in industrial applications. The proposal is available as a draft at https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/IoTDBProposal . I have also included the text of the proposal below. = IoTDB Proposal = v0.1 == Abstract == IoTDB is a database for managing large amounts of time series data such as timestamped data from IoT sensors in industrial applications. == Proposal == IoTDB is a database for managing large amount of time series data with columnar storage, data encoding, pre-computation, and index techniques. It has SQL-like interface to write millions of data points per second per node and is optimized to get query results in few seconds over trillions of data points. It can also be easily integrated with Apache Hadoop MapReduce and Apache Spark for analytics. == Background == A new class of data management system requirements is becoming increasingly important with the rise of the Internet of Things. There are some database systems and technologies aimed at time series data management. For example, Gorilla and InfluxDB which are mainly built for data centers and monitoring application metrics. Other systems, for example, OpenTSDB and KairosDB, are built on Apache HBase and Apache Cassandra, respectively. However, many applications for time series data management have more requirements especially in industrial applications as follows: * Supporting time series data which has high data frequency. For example, a turbine engine may generate 1000 points per second (i.e., 1000Hz), while each CPU only reports 1 data points per 5 seconds in a data center monitoring application. * Supporting scanning data multi-resolutionally. For example, aggregation operation is important for time series data. * Supporting special queries for time series, such as pattern matching, time series segmentation, time-frequency transformation and frequency query. * Supporting a large number of monitoring targets (i.e. time series). An excavator may report more than 1000 time series, for example, revolving speed of the motor-engine, the speed of the excavator, the accelerated speed, the temperature of the water tank and so on, while a CPU or an application monitor has much fewer time series. * Optimization for out-of-order data points. In the industrial sector, it is common that equipment sends data using the UDP protocol rather than the TCP protocol. Sometimes, the network connect is unstable and parts of the data will be buffered for later sending. * Supporting long-term storage. Historical data is precious for equipment manufacturers. Therefore, removing or unloading historical data is highly desired for most industrial applications. The database system must not only support fast retrieval of historical data, but also should guarantee that the historical data does not impact the processing speed for ??hot?? or current data. * Supporting online transaction processing (OLTP) as well as complex analytics. It is obvious that supporting analyzing from the data files using Apache Spark/Apache Hadoop MapReduce directly is better than transforming data files to another file format for Big Data analytics. * Flexible deployment either on premise or in the cloud. IoTDB is as simple and can be deployed on a Raspberry Pi handling hundreds of time series. Meanwhile, the system can be also deployed in the cloud so that it supports tens of millions ingestions per second, OLTP queries in milliseconds, and analytics using Apache Spark/Apache Hadoop MapReduce. * * (1) If users deploy IoTDB on a device, such as a Raspberry Pi, a wind turbine, or a meteorological station, the deployment of the chosen database is designed to be simple. A device may have hundreds of time series (but less than a thousand time series) and the database needs to handle them. * * (2) When deploying IoTDB in a data center, the computational resources (i.e., the hardware configuration of servers) is not a problem when compared to a Raspberry Pi. In this deployment, IoTDB can use more computation resources, and has the ability to handle more time s

The community is diversity, contributors from different companies or as individuals. -- Sheng Wu Apache SkyWalking -- Original -- From: "zhangli...@apache.org"; Date: Mon, Oct 29, 2018 05:27 PM To: "general"; Subject: [DISCUSS] Sharding-Sphere incubation proposal Dear Apache Incubator Community, I would like to start a discussion about the incubation of Sharding-Sphere at Apache. Please accept the Sharding-Sphere podling into the Incubator. We have 4 mentors, also we are welcome other volunteers to mentor us. The proposal can be found at https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/ShardingSphereProposal . Here is the text of it: = Abstract = Sharding-Sphere is an ecosystem of transparent distributed database middleware, focusing on data sharding, distributed transaction and database orchestration. It provides maximum compatibility for applications through Sharding-JDBC (a driver to implement JDBC) or Sharding-Proxy (a proxy to implement database protocol). = Proposal = With a large number of end users, Sharding-Sphere has a fairly huge community in China. It is also widely adopted by many [[ http://shardingsphere.io/community/en/company/|companies and organizations]] as a solution to process their massive amounts of data. We believe that bringing Sharding-Sphere into Apache Software Foundation could advance development of a stronger and more diverse open source community. Dangdang submits this proposal to donate Sharding-Sphere's source codes and all related documentations to Apache Software Foundation. The codes are already under Apache License Version 2.0. * Code base: https://github.com/sharding-sphere/sharding-sphere * Web site: http://shardingsphere.io/ * Documentations: http://shardingsphere.io/document/current/ * Community: http://shardingsphere.io/community/ = Background = Relational database hardly supports such huge amounts of data any more which has increased rapidly in recent years, but for reason of technique maturity, developers and DBAs still want to use it to persist core data. Sharding-Sphere was open sourced on Github in 2016. At the very beginning, Sharding-Sphere is just a JDBC driver for data sharding (name as Sharding-JDBC) at Dangdang internal framework; now it offers data sharding, distributed transaction and database orchestration. Besides JDBC, proxy to implement MySQL database protocol is also supported at present. Furthermore, our roadmap includes Proxy for PostgreSQL protocol, Sidecar model, data repica and elastic data scalability function as well. Due to the extension of project, we provide proxy model and sidecar model in addition to JDBC model. Therefore, we rename it to Sharding-Sphere by [[ https://github.com/sharding-sphere/sharding-sphere/issues/788|a public vote]], which refers to a sharding ecosphere with Sharding-JDBC, Sharding-Proxy and Sharding Sidecar as its three sub-projects. Sharding-JDBC has won the [[http://www.oschina.net/project/top_cn_2016|TOP 20 most popular open source projects in China 2016]]. = Rationale = Relational database still plays a very important role on current application system. The maturity of products and surrounding ecosystem, the friendliness of its data query and developers' and DBAs' mastery of it, cannot be completely replaced with other types of database in the near future. However, current relational database cannot support cloud native very well and it is not friendly to distributed system. It is the ultimate goal of Sharding-Sphere, which manages the databases scattering around the system, to make user use distributed databases as simply as using a single one. Without extra cost, Sharding-JDBC directly connects database with Java application to get the best performance. Sharding-Proxy is deployed as a stateless server and supports MySQL protocol at present. In the paper [[ https://db.cs.cmu.edu/papers/2016/pavlo-newsql-sigmodrec2016.pdf|What??s Really New with NewSQL?]], three types of NewSQL are introduced, among which Sharding-Proxy is a Transparent Sharding Middleware. Sharding-Sidecar can be understood as a data panel in Service Mesh. The interaction between the application and the database provides a mesh layer. The concept of Database Mesh is similar to Service Mesh, and it focuses on how to connect data access applications to the database. Database Mesh will set up a huge grid system between applications and databases. Applications and databases need be placed in the grid system. They are all objects managed by the meshing layer. = Current Status = == Meritocracy == Sharding-Sphere was incubated at Dangdang in 2015 and open sourced on GitHub in 2016. In 2017, JingDong recognized its value and determined to sponsor this project. Sharding-Sphere h
