Sheng,

Its perfectly acceptable for PPMC members to vote on the release here.
From my point of view, it gives me a better feeling that the PPMC knows the
steps required to have a valid release go out the door, what checks have to
be done.  So I encourage PPMC members to vote here, please don't discourage
it.

Give a speech about Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) in QCon Beijing 2018

Hi IPMC,


I have been invited and are going to give a speech about Apache SkyWalking 
(Incubating) in QCon Beijing 2018. The subject is `the Development of 
SkyWalking, from a small project into global community`. Most things in that 
speech will be about the project itself, and its development, such as, refactor 
and rewrite 4 times in 2 years, work in global community with Zipkin, CNCF 
OpenTracing, Distributed tracing workshop, etc. And of course, will mention 
Chinese Apache projects(including TLP and Incubating), and show our honor to be 
part of them.


I will notice every time, I mention the project with `(incubating)` or 
`??`(incubating in Chinese).


I send this mail to inform the IPMC, in case there are others things I should 
take care. Hope IPMC community gives me some advices to do so.

Perhaps a silly question but I notice several people say they used rat to check 
this release. Rat clearly shows the jars, does rat need to flag these in a more 
serious way or were they hidden by a too wide rat exclusion file?

Rat is just a tool, so anything is allowed. It??s up to you to check it 
complies with ASF policy.

I??ve primarily used excludes in rat to exclude files that can??t include a
license header or that does have one but rat doesn??t recognize it (I??ve
seen this problem with a minified version of jquery for example).

The incubator has an ongoing problem with lack of mentor engagement. Mentors 
are a crucial component of the incubation process. Incubation is the time when 
projects learn the Apache Way, and they cannot learn in a vacuum.

I??d like to discuss possible solutions to this problem. I??d like to hear from 
both podlings (PPMC members) and from IPMC members.

(By the way, it??s not just a problem for podlings. As a mentor, I am 
demoralized when I feel my co-mentors are not pulling their weight, and I get a 
little closer to burn-out.)

How to detect deadbeat mentors? One solution that has been discussed before is 
counting mentor sign-offs on podlings?? quarterly reports. Any project that 
received one or two sign-offs was deemed to be doing just fine. This is an 
imperfect metric.

Another remedy is to require podlings to be proactive: if they are not 
receiving adequate supervision, they should reach out to the IPMC and demand a 
change in mentors. The problem is, podlings have by definition not been through 
incubation before, so do not know what to expect. They don??t want to rock the 
boat.

I propose another solution. Let??s add a question to the podling report 
template, as follows:

It isn't too onerous for the podling, and only embarrasses mentors who deserve 
to be embarrassed.

What to do about deadbeat mentors? The current thinking is that every project 
should have three mentors, and if at least one of them is active, that??s OK. I 
think that the ??rule of 3?? actually makes the problem worse. It??s difficult 
to find three motivated individuals (or find enough work for them to do), so a 
podling will inevitably have one or two inactive mentors. It has become the 
norm that most mentors are inactive.

I propose that we get rid of the rule of 3. If mentors are not active, they 
should be encouraged to step down, and if they don??t, the IPMC should remove 
them. If this leaves the podling with zero or one mentors, then IPMC can step 
in and appoint new mentors. A podling with two active mentors is probably doing 
just fine.

Is this problem as serious as I think it is? Would my proposed solutions help?

Hi sebb,


I see your point, that is why we provide the build document[1] if you want to 
build from GitHub tag. Git submodules are used in our project for binding multi 
repos. The source codes tar is provided by running some source code release 
process, by following project document[2] and script [3].


And for `dependency-reduced-pom.xml`, it is generated in building the project, 
when we run build and tar source code. If you think we should not include it, I 
think we can add an exclusion in next release.

However that does not actually have a tag with the name '5.0.0-alpha'

Also, when I compare the contents of
apache-skywalking-apm-incubating-5.0.0-alpha-src.tgz with the tag,
there are several files in the source release that don't appear to
have a counterpart in the Git repo.

However that does not actually have a tag with the name '5.0.0-alpha'

Also, when I compare the contents of
apache-skywalking-apm-incubating-5.0.0-alpha-src.tgz with the tag,
there are several files in the source release that don't appear to
have a counterpart in the Git repo.

For example, apm-sniffer/apm-agent/dependency-reduced-pom.xml

our community is using GUI tool, such as source tree. We are trying to separate 
the steps.

From reading through this, I think I understand the confusion faced.

Typically when we see a source release, its tied to a single git repo.
Generating the source release in this case involves a special type of git
checkout, which IMHO is just fine.

It just needs to be documented that when you clone the repo, it's using the
--recurse-submodules flag.  This should result in

Also, when GitHub is used to grab the code as a Zip, it does not
include the submodules.

Maybe there is a setting that can tell GitHub to adjust the Zip
contents as well.

tag/release pages from GitHub, have no place to write build notice. Do you have 
any suggestion?


And for using git submodules, there are several requirements, we didn't use 
that from beginning.
1. SkyWalking community are building nodejs, C#, golang sdk/agent based on 
SkyWalking protocol, that is why SkyWalking protocol repo existed.
2. SkyWalking UI is very complex, and no Java tech stack related. The ci, tests 
are all Nodejs and react related.

Agreed that the Zip/Clone URLs on the GitHub page are not a canonical source.

However it's not at all obvious that using these links will not
actually create a copy of the full source, as I found out.

If it is not possible to update GitHub settings so that the Zip is
complete, then it would be useful if the relevant part of the
documentation made this clear.

AFAIK Git projects with submodules are relatively rare, so IMO
projects that use the feature should make it clear.

Now, we run dependencies by this way:
1) remove the direct dev dependencies manually 
2) run `npm-license-crawler --dependencies --relativeLicensePath --csv 
license.csv`. 
3) Run 
https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/blob/master/tools/releasing/generate-ui-depedencies.py
 script
4) Do some manual works.

By those, we also think it is not cool. I have already contact 
ECharts(incubating) team leader for some helps in nodejs field.

I already added an issue to track this: 
https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/issues/1013

We intend to fix this in beta release. 

Also if anyone in Apache community know nodejs/react/webpack well, please help 
us about this.

Please excuse the error on my part, which essentially missed this important
stage of VOTE'ing on general@ for official retirement of the HTrace Podling.
However, we are here now. The VOTE will be open for a minimum of 72 hours.
The previous community VOTE [0] took place on the HTrace dev@ list with a
lot of participation. I closed this off today with the RESULT [1].
I would like to explicitly note that a subsequent parallel thread was
initiated [2] which essentially suggested HTrace staying alive as a
Subproject. Unfortunately this thread petered out... my inclination is that
this outcome is that for HTrace to become a Subproject, essentially work
would need to be done by some people... which brings us back to the initial

Are MySQL driver and MySQL protocol allowed in distribution?

Someone asked whether could provide a mysql based storage implemention for 
SKyWalking.
I am aware mysql driver is under GPL, so should not be allowed, right?
Then how about the mysql protocol? If they implement the codes by themself, 
because the storage required a few features compared to the real driver.

You can't distribute the MySQL driver, but as long as you don't distribute
the driver, you are free to solve the problem any way you like.  You can
require that the user download the driver themselves, or you can develop
your own driver -- all of those are fine.

This is the policy that I think applies here:

Does the product work without MySQL?
It sounds like that this would be an optional storage method, so
depending on it would be fine.

The uses who want to use MySQL will have to download the driver (and
accept the terms of its license).
Those that don't wish to use MySQL aren't affected.

Is an incubating project allowed to release if it didn't follow Apache way.

Hi everyone,


I have to ask this, because some friends asked me today. 


Apache Weex (incubating) joined the Incubator at 2016-11-30, according to 
status page[1]. But someone talks to me about there is no Apache release since 
then, but instead, the project is still releasing under 
`com.taobao.android`[2], and the Apache repo includes new tags[3]. And I can't 
tell whether the releases are from Apache GitHub tags, but the time match. Also 
their Apache website includes these releases changelogs[4], also still can't be 
sure about matching the tag by reviewing the page.


The question are:
1. Are this releases allowed? Since it is still an incubating project, maybe 
YES?
2. Should a project to do so, even it is allowed? From my experience, this is 
very strange to me. Because I am seeing other incubating projects are doing the 
Apache release right after they join the incubator.


By being an Apache incubating project, most important, should learn to follow 
Apache way to govern project. But didn't release in that way(vote, check, 
release) didn't seem right to me.


Anyway, those are questions I can't answer. So could someone help? I want to 
make sure that, I give the right answers.

Some podlings do continue to make non-Apache releases during
incubation, usually because they have an existing community. Such
releases must be clearly labeled as non-Apache releases.

Did you discuss this with your mentors? In principle they are the ones
who know the podling's situation best, in order to evaluate such
requests.

Ah yes got it now, sorry - so what I meant is that the podlings who
are doing such releases should clarify that with their mentors.

I understand (now ;-) SkyWalking is not in this situation. If a
podling doesn't have specific, documented reasons to do non-Apache

I'm  Adam,  who is a committer of Weex??maybe I can clarify the confusion of 
Weex's release process.

Actually,  Weex released its first version in Apache on 2017-06-08,  after 
that, we faced some license problems. Facebook's BSD+Patents license was added 
to Category X[1] and Weex had some dependencies which were using that license,  
including our layout engine Yoga[2] (though its newest version has changed to 
MIT).

Some committers found the issue[3] and started working on a new layout engine, 
it was a massive work and took more time than we expected, fortunately it was 
nearly done. Weex will release next version in May.

During that time, the community building and development should be continued,  
so we added some tags and some "feature notes" to the community, we will make 
sure they are clearly labeled as non-Apache releases.

I strongly recommend using suffixes like -RC1 in the release candidate

Thanks, sorry for we didn't remove this since the last vote. We spent some time 
to make sure the UI licenses are all right and necessary.


I will submit an issue soon, and try to remove those in our next (beta2) 
release, which should be soon, expected in 3 weeks.

I checked the signing key, and verify the check sum.
Built the binary kit from source.

There are bunch of Apache Licenses in the binary kit which are stand Apache
Licenses.
We can do some clean up these License file in the next release.

recreating the minified version, people can find out themselves that

If you are going to do service mesh component, let's discuss how SkyWalking 
works on your Mesher control panel, even data panel. I have already started to 
discuss this with Ant Finance team and Istio team. I heard some rumors that you 
are doing this right now. Glad to work together.

These fonts[1] are from "ant-design" project, which is already list in our 
License file. I think the mistake is, we shouldn't add Apache head to that 
file, instead, we should add exclusion in rat and put some comments there too.

incorrectly added.

- LICENSE is missing license information for icon fonts [1]
- NOTICE is OK
- No unexpected binary files
- all source files have headers

We used to have the same question, too. We discussed with ant-design community, 
here are their feedbacks could be found in GitHub.

1. The codebase of those fonts are here: ant-design/antd-init . They declared 
that free to use from their README[1].
2. For 100% confirm, our PMC submit an issue[2], their official member 
confirmed in MIT.

Hi,

The license in the source release is boilerplate and contains no 3rd party
licenses.

How are those fonts licensed? It's not clear looking at the ant design
project that the fonts are under the same license as the ant design code.
In fact AFAICS the fonts are not included in that project. If this question
can be answered I'll reconsider my vote.

Free to use may not mean that you are free to distribute or free to alter so it 
still may not be open source or compatible with the Apache license.

At the start of the project's incubation, this can be set up quite
informally by just deciding on a list of initial members.

After the incubation is further along, a bit more formality is a good idea.
At that point, have a vote, proclaim a result and be done. There is no firm
line that determines when more formality is a good thing.

I have two questions
1. SkyWalking website is here[1], which already includes the links of Apache 
required. Such as: Apache website, donate, mail list, etc. But the whimsy check 
result[2] said no. 
2. The other question is, project should include its log in here[3], but I 
didn't find the way to upload it. How should I do that?

Sheng,

Your website base should be skywalking.incubator.apache.org.  Looks like your 
site generator is using skywalking.apache.org.  Some of the errors listed are 
because of this.

If you click on each of the links it'll explain the error, however I can see 
most of the links on your page.  Probably best to reach out to dev@whimsical to 
see why the parser can't read your page.  Even your disclaimer seems right.

also includes bridges to convert collected data and forward it to

Zipkin's core organization includes tracer libraries written in Java,
Javascript, Go, PHP and Ruby. These libraries use the formats

needed to send trace identifiers along with production requests. Many
Zipkin libraries can also send data directly to other services such as
Amazon X-Ray and Google Stackdriver, skipping any Zipkin
infrastructure. There are also more Zipkin tracing libraries outside
the core organization than inside it. This is due to the "OpenZipkin"
culture of promoting ecosystem work.

performance problems underlying the "fail whale" seen by users. The
name Zipkin is from the Turkish word for harpoon: the harpoon that

BigBrotherBird. It is due to BigBrotherBird that the de-facto tracing
headers we still use today include the prefix "X-B3".

In 2015, a community of users noticed the project was not healthy in

and the Cassandra backend was stuck on an unmaintained library. For
example, the Apache Incubator H-Trace project started in some ways as
a reaction to the inability to customize the code. The root cause of
this was Twitter moving to internal storage (Manhattan) and also the
project not being managed as a product. By mid 2015, the community
regrouped as OpenZipkin and the codebase moved from Twitter to an org
also named OpenZipkin. This led to fast progress on concerns including
initially a server rewrite and Docker based deployment.

In 2018, the second version of the data model completed, and along the
way, many new libraries became standard, including javascript, golang
and PHP. The community is dramatically larger than 2015, and Zipkin
remains the most popular tracing system despite heavy competition.

Zipkin is a de-facto distributed tracing system, which is more
important as architectures become more fine grained due to popularity
of microservice or even serverless architectures. Applications
transition to use more complex communication including asynchronous
code and service mesh, increasing the need for tools that visualize
the behavior of requests as they map across an architecture.

Zipkin's server is focused only on distributed tracing. It is meant to
be used alongside existing logging and metrics systems. Generally, the
community optimizes brown field concerns such as interop over breaking
changes such as experimental features. The combination of code and
community make Zipkin a safe and easier choice for various sites to
introduce or grow their observability practice.

Glad to see this come through!

One thing I'd like to point out is the thoughtful process OpenZipkin
went through in deciding to make the proposal.  Adrian led the community
through really figuring out what the community needed, and evaluated
either coming to the ASF, going to CNCF, or staying independent:

This is the kind of thing that would be great to write a blog post about
(from anyone, really) that the IPMC could point to as an example of how

Yes. Many people used to discuss on GitHub. We are OK with that. We have 38 
discussion issues[1] in this 5.0.0-RC development iteration(only a month).

+1. It's great that Zipkin can be a part of Apache Incubator project.

After going through the discussion here[1], I can see Zipkin leverage
Github infrastructure  a lot, we may need to figure out if we need to setup
the user mailing list for this project.
I agree with what John has said, you may consider twice for migration user
discussion from github to apache mailing list.
I think Skywalking may face the same issue, few people register the mailing

1. Sorry for 404 of how to build. It is caused by one of today's merge. 
Document location changed. Just after William checked our release. I should 
point it to our release TAG documents.[1]


2. The KEYS are used before and in ASF svn[2], and also in mail content, `Keys 
to verify the Release Candidate :` section. Is something wrong about this? I 
have checked locally again. .asc sign looks good.

iconfont hasn't independent license, we have already discussed that in last 
vote. It belongs to antd project, which's license is already included in our

Which is a good demonstration of why full instructions should be included in 
the release. :-)

There??s nothing wrong with teh KEYS or the signing it??s just a good idea to 
publish your keys so they are be easy to get at. This is a trivial issue, it 
just makes people life easier when reviewing or checking the release.

The MIT license specifies "The above copyright notice and this permission 
notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the 
Software.?? I believe you are missing that. This text (or a pointer to a file 
containing it) it is usually added to LICENSE. [1]

Yes in general MIT and BSD don??t need to be included in NOTICE. (Also [1])

It is in the source release, but it could be simpler to find.

I think it would be fine if you added to the README.md a "Building" section like

```
# Building
See documentation in docs/en/How-to-build.md
``` 

With this you can/should remove the 
"Guide to build the release from source" section from your release 
test/vote/announce emails.

Yes you will need a new release and vote :(
Both LICENSE and NOTICE needs fixing. 

AFAIK regardless if you include antd, as iconfont is transitively included then 
the MIT license must be included too.

Hi,

Do remember that a -1 is not a veto on releases, if you get 3 +1s and more
+1s than -1s you can still release. (Assuming you think the issue brought
up isn't serious and can be fixed in a later release.)

You can also try to change a person's mind who voted -1 and people can
change their vote.

This is a call for vote to release Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) version 
5.0.0-RC2.


The Apache SkyWalking community has tested, voted and approved the proposed
release of Apache SkyWalking (Incubating) 5.0.0-RC2


We now kindly request the Incubator PMC members review and vote on this
incubator release.


SkyWalking: APM (application performance monitor) tool for distributed systems, 
especially designed for microservices, cloud native and container-based 
(Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos) architectures. 
Underlying technology is a distributed tracing system.




Last RC release broke in IPMC vote, because our source release LICENSE and

First of all, yes, in this source release, the link is old. But because, I 
think only license and notice are blocks. I only update and fix these.


For the guide, they are already fixed in codebase, just not in this release. 
Considering it is not block.

The compile guide pointer in readme file is already the related path.


When next routine release, it will be included, at the end of Sep.

Hi,

Sorry but I still cannot vote +1 own this as the README.md still points to 
https://github.com/apache/incubator-skywalking/blob/master/docs/en/How-to-build.md
 for build instructions which gives a 404, please include the instructions on 
how the build the source in the release in the README.md or in a BUILD.md (or 
similarly named file) in the base directory.

Try to think like a user of this software they download it and want to compile 
it, they read instructions, are asked to follow a link (annoying) and then the 
link gives a 404, at this point some of them are going to give up and you will 
never hear from them again. Sure some may be able to find How-to-build.md in 
the docs and get it working but their first experience of the project is not 
ideal. Releases need to include simple easy to follow instructions on how to 
build. Those instruction may changed form release to release so pointing people 
to URLs is not helpful. What for instance if you want to compile an older 
version and the URL only has instructions for the most recent version?

I checked:
- incubating in name
- signatures and hashes good
- DISCLAIMER exists
- LICENSE and NOTICE good
- no unexpected binary files
- all source files have ASF headers
- unable to build from source

Thanks for fixing the license issue, however you also need to fix it in the 
binary release.

First of all, there is a direct link to that build page, in README of master 
and 5.x branches. See

We have both links to document and compiling guide.


Besides that, because many users are using git clone tag as sources too, 
although in Apache, we consider our source tar only. But in the community, they 
really use in another way, in our github issue, many compiling issue, even 
after we put this detailed guide.


Background story is, in our project repository, we are using git submodule, so 
we need the guide as detailed as possible. Such as git submodule init, git 
submodule update, etc.


That is why we build a long guide abouy how to build for convenience users.

In which README no longer contains any build instruction or direct pointers to 
them. I don??t think this is an improvement.

So now I need to stop looking at the terminal, open up a browser, goto GitHub 
and look at the README.md there. I need to know to click on ??Documents??, one 
page into that content, then read through two pages before finding a link on 
building, click on that and then read how to build from GitHub (not what I 
want) and then finally find after that it??s a single line "./mvnw clean 
package -DskipTests??. Why not just put that single line in the README?
