Good catch Alan. I agree with you that the jar files should be removed. I
have created https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HAWQ-1319 to address
this issue.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating (RC3)

2017-02-09 Thread Ed Espino
Alan,

Please, no need to apologize. We appreciate your review contributions
immensely. I was just getting a bit anxious as this is my initial time
being a release manager for an Apache project.

Does the existence of the jar files warrant another release candidate or
can we fix HAWQ-1319 in the next release?

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating (RC3)

2017-02-09 Thread Ed Espino
Alan,

Per your suggestion (which I agree with), I will be pulling this release
from IPMC release review consideration. We will be updating the Apache RAT
pom.xml file to refine the exclusions of the "src/test" directory so this
visibility of the jar files will be evident. Additionally, we will enhance
our verification steps to include searching for "jar" files throughout the
source tree.

Looking for ways to enhance the identification of release issues as early
as possible, would you be willing to share the release review process you
follow?

Thanks,

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating (RC4)

2017-02-22 Thread Ed Espino
Roman,

Thank you for filing HAWQ-1351.

I have added the following comment in the Jira: "On further inspection, we
will be removing this binary tarball and create it dynamically during the
test process from existing source test files (namely tweets-pp.json)." I
hope to have this file removed from our master branch today. This will keep
future reviewers from potentially tripping over it. We appreciate your
guidance and mentorship through this incubation period.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating (RC4)

Roman,

I have updated the description of HAWQ-1351 to reflect that we will be
removing the binary test tarball (tweets.tar.gz) from the source code base
and generating it dynamically.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating (RC4)

2017-02-23 Thread Ed Espino
Roman,

PR #1142 <https://github.com/apache/incubator-hawq/pull/1142> addresses the
issue (HAWQ-1351 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HAWQ-1351>) you
raised during your Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating RC4 review. The PR
removes the binary tarball (pxf/pxf-json/src/test/resources/tweets.tar.gz) from
the git repository. The test tarball will be dynamically generated when the
pxf-json gradle test task is executed.

[ANNOUNCE] Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating Released

2017-02-28 Thread Ed Espino
The Apache HAWQ (incubating) Project Team is proud to announce
the release of Apache HAWQ 2.1.0.0-incubating.

This is a source code only release.

ABOUT HAWQ
Apache HAWQ (incubating) combines exceptional MPP-based analytics
performance, robust ANSI SQL compliance, Hadoop ecosystem integration
and manageability, and flexible data-store format support, all
natively in Hadoop, no connectors required.

Built from a decade’s worth of massively parallel processing (MPP)
expertise developed through the creation of open source Greenplum®
Database and PostgreSQL, HAWQ enables you to
swiftly and interactively query Hadoop data, natively via HDFS.

FEATURES AND ENHANCEMENTS INCLUDED IN THIS RELEASE
- HAWQ Register enhancements and support for partition tables -
The HAWQ Register command registers and loads data files into
HAWQ internal tables using table metadata defined in a YAML
configuration file. HAWQ register now supports loading and
  registering 1-level partition tables.

- GPORCA upgrade - Many new features and bug fixes in the modular
query optimizer are integrated with HAWQ.

- ORC file format support is provided by a new PXF profile
exposed in the PXF Hive plug-in, named HiveORC. The HiveORC
profile supports access to data stored in ORC format through a
  Hive mapped table.

- PXF predicate pushdown and column projection availability -
HAWQ now makes available to the PXF service both the
predicate (filter string) and the column projection
information. With this feature, PXF plug-in developers can
implement predicate pushdown for their custom plug-ins.

- PXF now allows HCatalog/External Table queries to dynamically
select the most optimal profile for query execution based on
the underlying Hive file storage type.

- Ongoing ground work for Apache Ranger integration

- Fixes and enhancements on HAWQ Resource Manager, Interconnect,
Query Execution, Dispatcher, Catalog, libhdfs3 and more.

DISCLAIMER

Apache HAWQ (incubating) is an effort undergoing incubation at the Apache
Software Foundation (ASF), sponsored by the Apache Incubator PMC.

Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects until a further
review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision
making process have stabilized in a manner consistent with other
successful ASF projects.

While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection of the
completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate that the
project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.

Re: [VOTE]: Apache HAWQ 2.2.0.0-incubating Release

2017-07-05 Thread Ed Espino
Roman and John,

I have created the following JIRA to track this issue:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HAWQ-1496 ("Deliver LICENSE, NOTICE
and DISCLAIMER in main PXF RPM")

Regarding the comment "its a little odd that you only provide RPMs", this
is the project's first attempt at delivering convenience binaries. We are
learning a lot through this process and didn't want to chew off too much. I
believe the community will review delivering additional artifacts in
subsequent releases as demand hopefully increases.

Re: [DISCUSS] CloudBerry Proposal

2024-09-26 Thread Ed Espino
Dear Roman and Apache Incubator community,

As the chairperson of Apache MADlib PMC, I want to express my full support for
the Apache Cloudberry proposal. I believe this project presents a crucial
opportunity for the open-source MPP database community, particularly in light
of recent developments.

I'd like to add some context regarding MADlib:
- I support the recommendation of moving the Apache MADlib project under the
Apache Cloudberry umbrella. This closer collaboration is imperative for growing
the Cloudberry Database community and ensuring MADlib's continued development
and relevance.
- Recently, the majority of previous Greenplum participants have resigned from
the Apache MADlib project. While I fully respect any limitations they may have
in discussing their decisions publicly, this change underscores the need for a
new direction and community support for MADlib.
- The proposed consolidation with Cloudberry could provide a path forward for
MADlib, potentially attracting new contributors and re-engaging the broader MPP
analytics community.

I believe this integration aligns well with the goals outlined in the
Cloudberry proposal, particularly the aim to coalesce existing communities from
projects like Apache MADlib and Apache HAWQ. It presents an opportunity to
create a more comprehensive, open-source MPP analytics ecosystem.

I look forward to exploring how MADlib can contribute to and benefit from the
Cloudberry project. This collaboration could significantly strengthen the
open-source offering in the MPP database space, especially in light of
Greenplum's move to a closed-source model.

I'm eager to discuss this further and contribute to the incubation process.

Best regards,
-=Ed Espino
