ADDENDUM : LC_TIME and STABLE..

2000-07-04 Thread Richard Stanaford

I forgot to mention guys..

I have not yet built and installed a 4.0-STABLE kernel yet. The kernel is
still 3.0-RELEASE.

Thanks,

2000-07-04 Thread Richard Stanaford

Sigh.. grr. I did read the file, but missed that little stipulation. I guess
it's too little too late now...

'make depend' for the kernel failed.. sh died with SIG 12.

I rebooted the box and I can't even enter single user mode now. I get another
SIG 12 when I try to enter /bin/sh for the shell. Then I'm asked to enter the
path again. No shell.. no access.

Any ideas or should I scrap the install, wipe the disk, and start clean?

Thanks,
-rs

think I'd screwed myself.

I'll certainly buy a copy when we finally get the FreeBSD core, source, ports,
and distfiles on DVD. To think, having all of that on one disk at my
fingertips. It'd be really nice in a server farm application. Put the DVD
drive on an NFS filesystem and you'd be set as long as you didn't need bleeding
edge changes and updates.

I'll certainly a DVD application when the means to pursue it becomes more
realistic.

Oh man.. I didn't know it was *that* bad.. 8-) And here I thought long
filename conflicts were a thing of that past.

... "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in to the water..."

Something will get figured out. It always has in the past. I've always
appreciated the effort of you, Jordan, and everyone else in keeping this
project going. I have scarcely found myself able to contribute due to either a
lack of coding ability, or time, or both... I find that regrettable and I am
working to change that.

I am looking forward to the time when I can honestly say that I'm more than a
user of FreeBSD... I'm a contributer as well.

Aye.. I did miss it. But something I did not miss was a message that was sent
out by someone yesterday referring to the "breakage" in the present tense... as
in things were still "broken." Ambiguity is not a good thing.

I will probably need to pull most of the src tree in order to go STABLE from
4.0-RELEASE and that is a seven hour download across a 56K dialup connection...
a significant investment of time. So you can understand my caution.

Thank you for the responses,
-Richard

:-P You're right my friend. Heh. I overlooked the fact that a tree sync need
not be an all or nothing venture. I'm grabbing them now.

Assembler probs and 4.1-RELEASE...

2000-07-17 Thread Richard Stanaford

Hello everyone,

I saw a message posted earlier regarding assembler problems while compiling
BIOS code either during a kernel build or a Buildworld. I too am having such a
problem.

I was attempting to build a kernel and got some spam regarding invalid
assembler instructions while dealing with a file in /tmp. I apologize for
being vague, but it's currently hard to grab a dump of the output for the
email.

I figured I had run in to a bad install when I put 4.0-RELEASE on the system,
so I CVSup'ed using RELENG_4 and built the world, which succeeded. The ensuing
'buildkernel' failed for the same reason. I thought that, perhaps, my NOVA
conf file was wacky so I ran 'buildkernel' with GENERIC and it died too for the
same reason.

*Shrug* I'm at a loss. I initially did a binary only install of 4.0-RELEASE
and have since added the additional distros such as the name pages and
documentation *before* trying to go STABLE. I figure I somehow mangled
something and am considering a full reinstallation but I am curious about the
impending rollout of 4.1-RELEASE. Since I have not seen a code freeze
initiated yet, is that still "a ways" off?

If there are any suggestions to help me deal with the apparent assembler
problem I would appreciate them before I wipe the install, which I'll probably
do anyway because I planned out the filesystems wrong... doh!

Thanks for the info,
-Richard

I may have used ..

make buildkernel KERNEL="NOVA"

If the quotes are evil I would have expected it to make more than just 'as'
mad. I'm going to CVSup, buildworld, and buildkernel again tonight *without*
the quotes to ensure I did it right.

I am doing this on a 336MHz Celeron. I did a clean upgrade to STABLE from
4.0-RELEASE on my DX4/100 box and I did use the quotes without difficulty.

One word... Febreeze. *snicker* j/k

On a serious note you do need to be careful with a fan. They create an
oscillating EM field that could corrupt data. Hold a fan next to your computer
monitor and watch what it does. *ripple* *ripple* 8-)

I did know a guy who ran some air conditioning ductwork down and taped it to
the side of his box. I'd be worried about it getting too cold then.

Recently.

I did a successful upgrade from 4.0-RELEASE to STABLE on the DX4/100 just last
week. The changes to binutils had been committed for some time I believe.

nlist - REHASH

2000-07-22 Thread Richard Stanaford

All,

I have been carousing the mailing lists, both -stable and -questions, and I
have not found a definitive answer for this problem...

PROBLEM : top (among others) is broken after going to STABLE.

I know this is a FAQ. What is the preferred method for fixing this? Should I
implement the patches referred to by :

http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/152/2000/5/0/3727446/

or should I fix the loader? What is exactly wrong with the loader and how is
it fixed?

Thanks,
-Richard

I did say this happened after going STABLE, which implies that I did rebuild
the world. For sake of clarity, the procedure I followed was..

cvsup
cd /usr/src
make cleandir
make buildworld
hacked /sys/i386/conf/NEBULA from GENERIC
make buildkernel KERNEL=NEBULA
make installkernel KERNEL=NEBULA
cd /
chflags noschg kernel
chflags noschg NEBULA
mv kernel kernel.orig
mv NEBULA kernel
chflags schg kernel
reboot to single user
make installworld
mergemaster
cd /dev
sh MAKEDEV all
reboot multuser
top: nlist failed

All of this completed yesterday with no difficulty.

Now... is it preferred to apply the patches or mess with the loader? If the
loader is the problem, what needs to be done?
