Dynamic DNS Updates

2003-12-26 Thread Evan Sayer
	FreeBSD-
I would like to know how to make my server running 4.9 update my
networks Dynamic Ip address on my domains DNS servers. My ip is
always changing because it's dynamic, so a domain is essentially
pointless unless i can get this up and running. You could say i want
my domain to function as though it were assigned to a Static IP. I
have been googleing for hours, and i can't understand any of it.
Please be advised, i am somewhat new to FreeBSD.

Thanks a lot.

[no subject]

2004-01-15 Thread Evan Sayer
FreeBSD-
Please help, this is really important. I was told that i could get rid
of the ^m symbols at the end of the lines in my web page's html code
by using sed. They said to execute sed "s//^m^m" index.html >
index.html or something like that. This got rid of everything in the
file. I really need this back, so any help would be greatly
appreciated.

BIND

2004-01-29 Thread Evan Sayer
Wondering if there is a way to configure BIND to automatically update a
dynamic ip within your own dns? If not, can anyone recommend a good
simple client? Also my isp is roadrunner, and they say that they don't
allow web services to be run on dynamic ips. Do they mean that they
block the ports literally or does it just mean they frown upon it?
	Thanks

Network Gateway

2004-01-29 Thread Evan Sayer
I am a little unsure of what hardware to buy for this network.

A is my cable modem, b is a freebsd gateway/natd/bind/httpd server
(lot's of stuff, but most of them don't get too many requests; the
webserver is very small). I use natd's port redirection to give f and
e the ability to be accessed from the internet via ssh and ftp. F is
the main file server, while E holds other unrelated files and is also a
bakcup server for F. E also does samba for another client i didn't put
on there. D is an unrelated lan. You'll notice i have skipped c.
This is because i don't know what to buy (router, switch, or hub). I
think when you run natd it acts as a firewall (the data under the
gateway needs to be protected), but is it enough to warrant not buying
a router? I'm not sure how hubs or switches work. Thanks a lot (i
hope someone has an answer becuase these stupid drawings took me like
an hour).

chrooted ssh/scp

2004-01-31 Thread Evan Sayer
Does anyone know how to make it so that users can ssh in and get a
normal shell or scp in and get or send files but only within their own
home directories via chroot?

sun ultra 5 boot problems

2004-02-09 Thread Evan Sayer
I have successfully installed freebsd on 9.1 gb hdd in my ultra 5
(freebsd had no errors during install.) However when i say probe-ide
at the obp it doesn't even find the disk, which would explain why it
can't boot of course. Any help would be appreciated. -Thanks

Symbios SCSI on Sun Ultra 5

2004-04-08 Thread Evan Sayer
Hello-
I am trying to install FreeBSD 5.2 sparc64 on my sun ultra 5. I have a
Symbios SCSI card and when FreeBSD probes the device sym0 (the symbios
card) it says
sym0: No NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-20, SE, Parity Checking
sym0: CACHE INCORRECTLY CONFIGURED
panic: trap: memory address not aligned
cpuid = 0;
Uptime: 1s

Before this when the openfirmware probes the devices it gives a "Fast
Data Access MMU Miss"- not sure what that means. Any help fixing this
would be appreciatied.

ISDN Jack Installation

2004-09-04 Thread Evan Sayer
Hello-
My new house is currently being built, and I am wondering if I should
install an ISDN jack now so that the SBC people don't have to do it
once the walls are up and I actually want an ISDN connection. What do
the people who install it have to do to get is upstairs when they
install it, is it difficult? How is an ISDN line added, and can I do
it myself? Thanks.

Hello-
Does anyone know how to get the ctime(3) format of the date in a script
(i.e without actually writing a C program to return it).

-Thanks.

Diskless Servers

2004-11-21 Thread Evan Sayer
Hello-
Is it a good idea to run a mail server or web server diskless? The
reason I want to do this is so that all of our server's files will be
in one place which will make backups more convenient. Basically I am
thinking of running one NFS/TFTP file server with disks, and those
disks will contain the partitions for a web server, a mail server, and
a login server which will all boot diskless. Is this safe and ok
performance wise? Thanks.

Vinum

2004-03-20 Thread Evan Sayer
I have a question about how vinum effects access to file systems. When
i have a vinum volume on a drive which contains the file system /usr,
which is being mirrored to another volume on another drive, are the
contents of /usr encompassed in the volume (like a partition) or is
the volume just a part of /usr. Basically i want to have a RAID-1
setup that mirrors the information on one drive to another. If i do
this will i be able to access all the files on the first hard drive as
though it was just a regular partition. If so how do i partition, is
there something special i have to do at the partition editor when i
install? Do i need subdisks and plexes just to mirror the file
systems' data? Sorry if this is a bad question but the handbook has me
a little confused. Thanks a lot.
