VMware 5.5 w/FreeBSD as host OS?
All, I'm just curious, given the Linux support, if anyone is running VMware 5.5 with FreeBSD as the host operating system. VMware claims they "don't support it", but history has repeatedly shown me that "not supported" is not the same as "doesn't work". ICH7 w/multiple ar devices?
All, I've recently just picked up a couple of new boxes that come with a Tyan motherboard that has an ICH7[r, I believe] on the motherboard. I installed 2x500GB drives, and discovered that the card will allow me to put multiple arrays on the disk. For chuckles, I put a 100GB mirror (RAID 1), and a 700-and-chage (500x2 - the 200GB mirror) stripe (RAID 0) array. However, when I boot the installer (6.0), its only seeing ar0 (the RAID 1 array). Is there any way to get an ar1 to see the other disk array? I see a kern.disks sysctl knob, but I'm assuming its read-only, and atacontrol create smells about right, but again seems to assume 1 raid setup per physical device. -B ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
HP AMD64 booting problems...
I recently picked up an HP5460 AMD64 laptop, and I recently wanted to try FreeBSD on it. Unfortunately, both the x86 and AMD64 versions will not boot, actually shutting the power down shortly after the kernel finishes loading. I've tried 5.3 and 4.8 with similar results, also cycling through disabling ACPI, "safe mode", and going to the boot loader prompt and manually turning off whatever I can think of. Does anyone have any additional suggestions (either to boot it, or provide diagnostics), or will I be trapped to run Windows on this rather powerful machine? :) -Brian ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Recommendations for "All-in-One" device?
I'm currently in the market for an "All-in-One" device for the home network, mostly for the fax functionality (it'll be replacing an Canon scanner and Okidata 810e laser printer). Before anyone suggests their favorite FreeBSD Fax modem/app, I'll let it be known that I've been told that the expectation is that we'll have a "normal" looking/working fax machine for the house ;) I've searched the mailing lists for "All-in-One", and tried searches on printers, scanners, copiers, and faxes individually with no real good hits. I'm somewhat curious about the HPs, but wanted to get people's experiences with different devices, and what works/doesn't work with FreeBSD. -B ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Problems with ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500
I've been fighting with this for a day or two now, and I've run out of leads to fix it. Help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. I have an IBM T40 running FreeBSD 5.1 (stock) with a ports collection from 9/24, as there were apparently some changes to the XFree86 port between 5.1 and that date (and I wanted to make sure I had the latest patches). Using X -configure and xf86config generate similar, yet distinctly different config files. Both have the same problem, however, in that when I start X, I get either signal 6s, or signal 11s, and it crashes, whether I use XFree86 directly, or run xdm. I've gone through the log, and made changes to load the modules to get rid of the missing symbols from the generated config file. At this point, the only thing that looks odd is the reported screen resolution of 65536x65535, but can't find a way to over ride it. I've included my dmesg output from the laptop, so that the hardware I'm running can be seen. I've also included my XF86Config file, and the log from a typical run. Again, a working config or pointers on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. -Brian Copyright (c) 1992-2003 The FreeBSD Project. Need help getting NIS authentication working w/5.1
I'm having some problems getting NIS working with 5.1. Historically, I'd set up ypbind, add +: to the user database, and I was off and running. Not so, it appears, in 5.1. My understanding is that the servers are NIS+, although I do not have all of the details. I'm able to get ypbind to bind to the domain using "-m -S ,," syntax. I can use ypwhich, ypcat, and ypmatch to pull database records, so this side of it seems to work. However, if I add the +: to the user database, I can not log in as a NIS user. Using trafshow, I can see traffic to and from the server, so I'm guessing its a local authentication thing, so I pressed on. After reading the man page, it tickled my memory about using DES passwords, so I went in to /etc/login.conf and changed the passwd_format entry to des. Still no joy. So, more reading. Based on what the "defaults" are supposed to be, this should now be working. However, in believing that the docs might be wrong, I removed the +:, and created the following nsswitch.conf file, which I stuck in /etc. hosts:files dns passwd:nis [success=return] files group:nis files networks:files Still no joy, and playing with the file doesn't seem to help out a lot. The only log messages I'm getting is the stock "login failed..." messages. Can anyone give me a pointer as to what I'm missing? I can't believe that it would be totally broken, so I'm assuming its OE. If you could email me directly, I'd appreciate it, as I don't always get a chance to review the list digests. -Brian ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Sendmail relaying from remote domains?
I realize this question is probably best served by the sendmail mailing list, but whereas I've added the Spam Assassin filter, I'm hoping to find a larger community here that is running FreeBSD + sendmail + SpamAssassin who have handled this, so I don't have to ask the question in 3 places :) The issue I seem to be having is that messages are coming in, forged from my domain, but sent to a valid user within my domain (e.g. from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) containing a virus attachment. I had assumed that sendmail would be smart enough to look at the fqdn portion, and see that the sender is not in fact from that domain at all (a quick reverse/forward DNS lookup of the inbound socket should prove this), and trash this. Is there an easy way to shut this down? An example mail log entry (for reference)... Setting up VLAN interfaces with Cisco gear... getting traffic on broadcast only...
All, I've got three Catalyst 6500s configured in a switching domain via fiber, with one "hub" 6500 connecting two remotes. Their port configurations are basically (the actual port number varies based on the device). interface Gigabit Ethernet 9/2 no ip address switchport switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q switchport mode trunk The switches have been working as-is for over a year now, so I know that part of the configuration is good. I've been asked to provide some Sun jumpstart services, and want to use an IBM x335 with a bge interface to act as a bootparams/tftp/rarp server, and figured that trunking it in to the main switch and bringing up vlans for the individual subnets that would be served would be the right way to go, so I configured up one of the gig-E interfaces, as above, with the only change selecting the UTP media. On the FreeBSD (6.0) side, I then ran: ifconfig bge0 up media 1000baseTX mediaopt full-duplex ifconfig vlan0 create vlan 1 vlandev bge0 ifconfig vlan0 10.86.154.221 netmask 255.255.255.240 The other devices on the subnet are 10.86.154.209 ("Hub 6500"), 10.86.154.210 ("Remote 6500 1"), 10.86.154.211 ("Remote 6500 2"), and 10.86.154.222 ("Another x335 server running Linux"). However, I don't seem to be able to get normal traffic through the link. If I ping 10.86.154.223 (the subnet broadcast), I see responses from all of the above devices - the first looking normal, and the remainder showing (DUP!), which I would expect. Pinging a device directly causes packets to get lost. They show up in the outbound stats, and the 6500(s) appear(s) to see and respond to it, but it never comes back in via the vlan0 interface. Any suggestions to try before I bang my head against the wall? -Brian ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Automatic Firewall software?
All, This morning, I woke up to find one of my systems under hacker attack (considerable multiple attempts to log in to ftp, ssh, etc., mostly using system accounts). I loaded ipfw and set up a couple of quick rules to block the point of origin. Unfortunately, the address appears to be DHCP'ed, so I expect the hacker will at some point get a new address, and start over. Rather than having to hang over my machine is there any software out there that will monitor logs (e.g. /var/log/messages), parse out failed logins like this, and run an ipfw command to block it? Perhaps something can be done via PAM? An added extra bonus would be if it would unblock after some period of time, in case a legit. user bungles their password, and can't get in (saves the service call). -Brian ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
USB Stack/# of bytes to read?
All, I have a couple of quick questions about the USB stack in 8.x that I'm hoping someone with a bit more experience than I can answer. I am currently working on a device driver for a Velleman K8055 board. Basically, it does digital and analog I/O under the control of a PC via USB. I've got the basic driver working fine, and I'm moving data back and forth without issue. What I'd like to be able to do, however, is poll the driver to see how much data is sitting in the input buffer, or at least see how many packet/buffers are waiting. Looking through the control structures, it appears that something like sc->fifo.fp[USB_FIFO_TX]->used_q.ifq_len would be the right field, but it never appears to be set anywhere (and is always 0). Using something like USB_IF_POLL() on the used_q suggests there is something to write, but not how much. On a similar line of thinking, how about flushing the queue entirely? Should I call usb_fifo_reset() directly? Or should I just reimplement the logic? -B ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
Changes to libfetch in 5.0 break proxy support?
I'm having a problem with fetch and libfetch in 5.0, and (given that I currently have a bad cold), I'm hoping to get a cheap answer before I have to start crawling through code. In the 4.x days, I was able to set up an apache web proxy, and then export FTP_PASSIVE_MODE=YES and HTTP_PROXY=:80, and then go to /usr/ports, and say, for instance "make all". Everything would then download correctly, and go on happily. Now, however, it appears that when I do this, the connection either times out, or I get a file with the right name, but the contents are an HTML document (wrapped to fit in 80 cols). ftp://space.mit.edu/pub/davis/jed/v0.99/jed-B0.99-15.tar.gz";> I know the proxy is working, as my 4.x boxes still go through it happily. Suggestions for embedded systems... ?
All, I've been browsing the FreeBSD site looking for a system I can embed in the car. Optimally, it will do video output via a RCA cable (ala your VCR) so I can plug it in to one of the new Alpine radios with an AUX in. Input will probably come via a USB gaming pad (arrow keys, a few buttons, and 16-20 keys). I'd like to have bluetooth and 802.11b/g for communicating with a base station and the in car GPS and phone audio systems. USB (4-6 ports) would be perfect - I can get the keyboard, bluetooth, 802.11g, and ODB II connectors in without a hub. Most I've seen boot from compact flash, but booting from a USB thumb drive or SD ram would also be useful. Audio would also be nice, but I can get away with the bluetooth link. The form factor should be as small as possible for under-seat, behind-dash, or trunk installation. I've seen the Soekris systems, and they're at a good price point, but while they'd support most of what I'd need, they don't seem to have RCA video output, which would be a major plus for real time color displays of status and information (has anyone played with the USB video options available? Does FreeBSD support them?) Suggestions? Comments? Re: Suggestions for embedded systems... ?
Thanks. The downsides I see are its relatively large size (ATX) and power requirements (full ATX). What I'm looking for is more along the lines of http://www.soekris.com/net4801.htm, only with an RCA video connector. Its small, takes virtually no power, takes car voltages (vs. upconverting back to 110AC for an ATX power supply), and has 80% of what I want. I just need the last 20% :) -B > > > --- "Brian J. if_bridge and VMware....
I'm in the process of doing something that is possibly a bit out of the ordinary with VMware. I have two stand alone PCs connected to a catalyst 2900 doing 802.1q trunking. I can configure the VLAN interfaces on the stand alone PCs, assign IP addresses, and communicate happily. I then add a PC running VMware's free software offering, again set up the ethernet for 802.1q, and load FreeBSD in to a VM. Like the stand alone PCs, I can configure the vlan interface, attach it to the "hardware" interface (lnc0), configure vlan interfaces, assign IPs, and life goes happily on. However, what I want to do is add another VM to the network, which does not support 802.1q natively, so thought I could create a host only network, add the network to the FreeBSD machine and the new VM, and then bridge the VLAN interface to the new network's "hardware" interface (lnc1). To test connectivity, I initally assigned an IP to lnc1 of the FreeBSD system, and an IP to the new VM's ethernet interface. The two systems communicated fine, so far, so good. I then rebooted both boxes, configured the "vlan100" interface with: ifconfig vlan100 create vlan 100 vlandev lnc0 ifconfig vlan100 up I then changed the mtu of lnc1 to match vlan100, and brought it up: ifconfig lnc1 mtu 1496 ifconfig lnc1 up I then created the bridge, and attached the interfaces: ifconfig bridge0 create ifconfig bridge0 addm vlan100 addm lnc1 ifconfig bridge0 inet 1.1.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 up The stand alone hosts are 1.1.1.1 and 1.1.1.2. The other VM is 1.1.1.20. At this point, the FreeBSD system can not ping either the stand alone boxen, nor the other VM. In playing with it, if I assign an IP address to vlan100, I can reach the stand alone boxes, but not the other VM. Running trafshow, I see broadcast ARP requests on bridge0, vlan100, and lnc1, but no responses. Any thoughts about what I can look at, or what additional information would be handy? Looking for a cookbook on Oracle clients...
All, I have a task that requires I extract a data set from a MySQL server, and push it on to an Oracle (9i) server. I figured I'd go the ODBC route, and installed unix_odbc_driver and its dependencies. However, its pretty clear that I don't fully understand what I'm doing, and each step forward is costing me half a day of debugging, reading code, and banging my head against the wall. From the documents I can find on the web, it seems all I should have to do is install, configure my odbc.ini and odbcinst.ini files, and go. So, the questions: 1.) Is anyone using unixODBC and oracle_driver_odbc against a 9i server? 2.) If so, can someone send me their .ini files and any other environment and oracle settings they needed to do to make it work (mine are below)? 3.) Have people moved over to the instantclient in ports? If so, does anyone have some sample code to test the basic ability to connect? -Brian [Oracle] Description = Oracle Configuration Driver = Oracle Trace = Yes TraceFile = /var/log/odbc.log Database= eengstg Servername = oracle_server UserName= Password= Port= 1521 [Oracle] Description = Oracle driver for FreeBSD Driver = /usr/local/lib/liboraodbc.so Setup = /usr/local/lib/liboradbS.so ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Mapping USB ugen 802.11g adapter to ndis
All, I have a USB 802.11g (DLINK) adapter that I would like to use to access a wireless network. I've been able to download the Windows drivers, convert them in to the kernel module, and load the module. However, when I plug the adapter in, the ugen driver picks it up. Historically, when I've had a new device, I had to tweak the USB driver to recognize the manufacturer and model. However, in the case of ndis, I've only found /usr/src/sys/dev/if_ndis/if_ndis_usb.c, which doesn't seem to have such a list. Can anyone point me to how I can get the ndis driver to take ownership for the USB device in question? Or is USB NDIS support just not there yet? -Brian ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
bootparamd doesn't allow parameters?
All, I'm in the process of trying to set up a Solaris jumpstart server in a lab, and I decided for chuckles to do it with FreeBSD. The problem I'm running in to is that apparently, the Sun bootparamd allows you to pass parameters as fields, for instance, as a couple of sample fields out of the Solaris-generated /etc/bootparams (note: entry is clearly not complete, but I didn't want to distract) testserver rootopts=:rsize=32768 term=:vt100 However, if I move this directly in to FreeBSD's /etc/bootparams, it will complain that it can not answer the request for "rootopts" from the Sun box. Is there something I'm missing? the man page seems to allude to the fact that all entries should be in the format of :. Or, am I going to have to look at finding another bootparamd than the stock one? -Brian ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

NFS hangs (client) when rebooted server tries to [re]mount filesystem
All, I'm seeing an odd problem while using a FreeBSD system as a Solaris jumpstart system. If I run a client box through the process, its fine the first time. However, if there is an error, or I'm testing, subsequent passes hang up right around the time it should be trying to do an NFS mount. Rebooting the server (FreeBSD 5.4) and restarting the jumpstart process on the client cleans the issue up, and it runs through again (once) fine. Upon running "showmount localhost" after a good pass, I see that the server is registered, even after its been booted, powered off for some time, etc. I expect this is because its not properly doing a unmount. However, the registration can persist for days. I don't have the lock or stat daemons running (didn't see a need), but that may be next on my things to do. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to flush this list, or see what may be causing the client to lock up? I've seen the notes in the bootparams file about setting up an all-0s alias for SunOS broadcast, and have done that, as well. ancontrol turns on WEP for Leap on 5.1-RELEASE

I just installed 5.1-RELEASE on my laptop, reloaded my script that sets up my Cisco wireless card, ran it, and BAM! no networking. Upon inspection, it would appear that when using LEAP as the authentication method, WEP is coming on when you run the authentication (-L) step. My understanding is that using LEAP means you can't use WEP, let alone it being the default. I haven't gone back to 5.0 to compare yet, but i don't believe it worked that way there. FIONREAD behavior possible on uhid?
All, I recently picked up a Velleman K8055, which is basically a Digital and analog I/O board that connects to a PC via a USB connection. So far, its worked fine w/FreeBSD, the uhid driver picks it up, and a simple cat < /dev/uhid0 will start pulling the 8 bytes that represent the inputs and counters available. However, once the device is open, it polls several times per second, and uhid begins to buffer the board's output in a clist. Since I don't need that level of resolution, I'm looking to have the application back down to once per second, perhaps slower (every 5 seconds). However, in order to do this, I need to either stop the over sampling or flush the buffer, and then pick up the first "new" read. However, performing both a TIOCFLUSH (have ioctl flush the buffers) as well as a FIONREAD (return the number of bytes waiting so the application can read them and throw them away) fail. I also tried to add a FIONREAD to uhid_do_ioctl() and uhidioctl() at different times. My understanding is that with the ioctl calls, the infrastructure should be able to do the copy out, so a simple: case FIONREAD: { *addr = sc->sc_q.c_cc; break; } should have done the trick, and it compiles happily, but it fails with an invalid address error when the ioctl is called. I also tried using copyout directly, but from the little reading I did, addr is already supposed to be in the kernel address space, and it returns EFAULT. Its been about 10 years since I've played seriously in the kernel space, so I hope its something simple I've just forgotten. Can someone point me at a way to get this functionality, short have having to write a device-specific driver (a-la uvisor) ? -B ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Does "ifconfig -a" confirm that everything gets set up ok? > and my switch config looks like this: > > interface FastEthernet0/12 > switchport access vlan 254 > switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q > switchport trunk allowed vlan 100,200,233 > switchport mode trunk > logging event trunk-status > duplex full > speed 100 > end The "switchport access vlan 254" looks suspect. A trunking port shouldn't have access port parameters. You're also missing vlan 1. See below... > I'm getting to the point that the vlan interfaces (100,200,233) can > talk to machines on their subnet but I cannot seem to ping anything on > the 10.254.254.0/24 subnet (ip address applied to vr0 interface) or > anythnig via the default route. Well, if you can't ping anything on the subnet, that would assume you can't reach the default gateway, and therefore, its not surprising you can't ping anything further upstream :) >From what I see here, you never allow vlan1 to travel on your trunk. vr0, as >an "unvlan'ed" interface, will default to vlan1 with dot1q. > If anyone can assist me I'd appreciate it, please contact me off list > as I am not subscribed to -questions. > > Cheers, > > Will ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
