experiences with the beta nvidia driver
Last night I mentioned it is now avaible... has any one tried it with anything near this combo: P-35 Chipset GeForce 5200 GT (PCI) 7-CURRENT The reason for asking is when I installed it the kernel reconizes my card but Xorg (7.3) doesn't recognize it (same as before the beta) BTW it does not implement --enable-all-gpus it seems right now --Aryeh ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

url encoding a string with base system tools
I am creating a new port and part of the install procedure is the install script needs to send some data to a web server in the form of http://.?X where XXX is the url encoded plain text (can include any ascii printable character) that needs to be sent. Re: what cpu type to use for a intel duo e6850 (i386 or amd64)
Would the following procedure work to do an inplace upgrade: 1. Download the amd64 iso 2. Install it on a spare disk/partition 3. Do a cvsup on it's /usr/src 4. Make buildworld/buildkernel 5. Mount the x86 disk/partition 6. Copy /usr/obj (and /usr/src for good measure) from the amd partition to the x48 7. Reboot with x86 partition 8. Make installkernel/installworld mergemaster on x86 partition 9. Now the non-ports section OS is amd64 10. pkg_del /var/db/pkg/*; rm -rf /usr/ports/ /usr/local 11. Reftp ports.tar.gz and rebuild all the ports (I have about 10 top level ports installed the rest are dependicies so this straight forward) So does it work? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

OT: XML newbie

Now my question what is a good/reasonable set of command line tools for working with/debugging/testing all this in such a way I do not need to rely on the browser... specifically what types (and specific ones if there is a preference) tools do I need and are there any recommended procedures for dealing with XML from the command line in the future we may want to also do Java parsing of XML but that seems to be well handled already in the JDK (1.6) API thanks in advance ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

The issue your talking about is actually caused by a fundamental flaw in *ALL* pure open source projects namely in return for the freedom to look at the code and stuff we give up market forces. If there where real market forces then *SOMEONE* in the larger freebsd community would find it profitable to write such drivers (and other needed unglamorous but necessary tasks).A model I proposed (with about 3 others from different FOSS backgrounds) a few years ago is still as relivent now as it was then despite the lack of reconition that it allows for all the freedoms of open source but without the neglecting of user demands (i.e. market forces). The model is actually really simple: the source code is freely available to *ANYONE* for study/research/evaluation/educational *BUT* the minute you compile it becomes economically valuable to the user (assuming that there is no value to the above free uses [it is not a bad assumption if you look at it]) and thus *MUST* be paid for. Now the one small twist this has over any other model is that with basic (but careful) planning it always for anyone who has contributed to get their fair share of any revenue.Think of it as the idea that everyone must contribute to the project either with money and/or work to improve it (let their own enlightened self interest dictate what mix they choose). The only legal hurdle to this is that the OSD definition of open source does not allow for licenses to "descriminate" between classes of users (people who only read the source code but do not use it and those that do use it). ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
Re: Lennart Poettering: BSD Isn't Relevant Anymore
Just a side note I am the managing partner in a software development firm and they *ONLY* reason we have not released the majority of our internal lib is because we are essentially giving something of huge value (to us) up for nothing in return but if there was money involved to compensate for the time and effort we put into writing the lib we would gladly contribute it to any deserving project. But, sadly since we live and die as consultants by having a unique competitive advantage (in this case a lib that adds commercial value to our work by completing projects faster). Is there any way to get portmaster to reinstall every port in the *EXACT* same order they where installed in, preferably with out any knowledge of what ports where installed after the current one was the reason for asking is many times it seems that subtle incompatibilities solely due to either the order of upgrades in -ad and/or when a port gets updated autoconfig picks up stuff non-dependant ports that where installed later... a good example of the second is gettext compiles with java support if you reinstall after installing Java but does not do so if installing before you install it ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Fwd: FreeBSD on Rackspace Could
For us it is mostly cost but the other advantage (with RS at least) is you can size the "hardware" to fit your needs and not get any more then you need... for example when we first started our consulting firm back in July we bought 256MB of RAM (RS sizes the Disk, CPU, Bandwidth, etc. as a multiple of RAM) and then moved to 512MB in Sept. and except for the 10 mins it took for RS to transfer our server image from a 1U VM to a 2U VM (1U = 256MB/RAM) the move was completely painless and no time and effort was needed to update the OS, 3rd party apps, our custom made code, etc Like I said early the only downside of using RS as our primary server provider (even though we use it for internal development only [but since each of the 3 partners lives in a different part of the US it is much cheaper and easier then having it in one of our houses because none of our ISP's allow static IP's for non-business users which is twice the cost almost]) -- Forwarded message -- From: Tom Worster Date: Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 9:34 AM Subject: Re: FreeBSD on Rackspace Could To: dalesc...@shaw.ca Cc: FreeBSD On 11/13/10 6:32 PM, "dalesc...@shaw.ca" wrote: >> but dedicated/vps does not offer what cloud computing does. > >What do feel are the advantages of the cloud? i haven't used one yet but, as far as i can tell, the interesting differences derive from how the could platform implements network, storage and compute elements in a distributed hardware system meshed up with a mesh interconnect (presumably of the high-performance computing type). the resulting advantages for me: the storage arrays are raid 10 and all their responsibility not mine; shared file systems are part of the platform so i don't need to mess around with nfs; load balancing (which i currently can't afford) is part of the network platform; so is the address juggling needed for high availability (failover and restoration); and the price for each vm seems to allow me maybe 2 or 3x as many hosts as i get with dedicated servers so i can separate the db servers from the rest of the app and assign no more memory than i need to each vm. in summary, it seems i can get the high-availability, load-sharing architecture i want at a price that's beyond my budget with dedicated hosts. and it looks like there's a bunch of other nice aspects that aren't radical but will be time savers: backups, standby images, simpler sysadmin (there's a lot less to a cloud server "slice" than a whole computer), monitoring, persistence. does this begin to answer your question? this weekend i tried out gentoo on a wee celeron box i have. (someone here said gentoo was the linux most like freebsd and rackspace cloud offers it). it's the first linux experience i've had in which i didn't feel like a clumsy incompetent. the similarities and differences relative to freebsd are interesting. maybe i'll write up my initial impressions. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org" ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
