Compiling Linux Driver under FreeBSD

2004-07-15 Thread Ahmad Zulkarnain
Hi guys!
I'm a newbie runnin FreeBSD 5.2.1 on Clevo M22ES laptop. Sorry if my
question has been asked before. I have a built-in SmartLink modem (SiS
chipset) and I grabbed myself the official linux driver from their
website. Can I just compile the driver in FreeBSD? I'll be glad if
someone can point a howto sites fer it.

Thanks in advance.

you can't really do that, ahmad. the linux drivers will probaly be using
linux kernel syscalls which are not the same as for the freebsd kernel.
what chipset is the smartlink modem using ? if it's the lucent chipset,
you can use the ltmdm port at /usr/ports/net/ltmdm.
btw, i'm in malaysia too, so do holler if you need any help.

Thanks fer the explaination Dinesh, Kris, Ken and Jerry! Sorry I took
your time by answerin it. It seems this question of mine has already
been asked a few times already. I tried ltmdm but it didn't work.
Definitely not a lucent chipset I guess. Anyway, thanks again. I'll
google some more of it.

Can't log in KDE, kdeinit.core & ksplash.core dumps

2004-08-03 Thread Ahmad Zulkarnain

Hash: SHA1
Hi guys,
I try loggin in KDE usin Alsemo (my normal user's id) and put the
password then I hit [Enter]. The KDE's splash screen appeared and all
of the sudden the splash screen is gone and froze. Ctrl+Alt+F* and
Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace didn't do any good and the mouse is immobilized. I
had to hard-reboot and when the KDM greeted me again, I try loggin in
to KDE again usin Alsemo but after I hit [Enter], the screen went back
to KDM creatin an endless cycle of tryin to log in but failed. dmesg
tells me:
pid 676 (ksplash), uid 1001: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
pid 687 (kdeinit), uid 1001: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
pid 688 (kdeinit), uid 1001: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
pid 690 (kdeinit), uid 1001: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
pid 693 (kdeinit), uid 1001: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
and there's kdeinit.core and ksplash.core dumps in my home directory.
There's also a .xsession-errors file which says:
startkde: Starting up...
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

startkde: Shutting down...
KLauncher: Exiting on signal 1
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
I'm totally lost. I tried disablin KDM in /etc/ttys and Alsemo can log
in X (not KDE). When I enable KDM again, the same error persist. The
mind-bogglin thing bout this is that root can log in KDE without
problem. Help/tips are very much appreciated. If the output of
kdeinit.core & ksplash.core is needed, I'll post it in the next email.
Thanks!

Hi Ridzuan,
It's quite shockin to be noticed and receive technical question at the
same time because honestly, I don't think I'm elegible enough to
answer any technical related question about FreeBSD ;) . Anyway, nice
knowin you. Yes I did some configuration but not on the adsl modem but
in the /etc/ppp/ppp.conf file. As a FreeBSD newbie meself and my
Streamyx's speed is just a mere 512Kbps, I think it's the best that I
forward this mail to the appropriate FreeBSD mailing list so that you
will have a much better explaination, tips etc. Do include relevant
.conf files (/etc/ppp/ppp.conf) so that others can easily help you out.
It's also a good practice to subscribe to
FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.org for technical related FreeBSD uhm,
