Sure I did. I always do that. You never know, can you? ;-) I followed procedures! Yes sir, I did, so that is not the point. On a second (almost identical) machine I even removed every trace of kde ever installed. Still, the same error. On that machine I can only get older kde packages back, because the most recent one will not compile. As you can see in the error file lots of dependencies get compiled before the error takes place. It seems kde related. How to debug the sound driver?
Hi all, from Release 5.2.1 to 5.3 there were changes done at the soundcard support. (The release-notes say so.) Now my soundcard does not work anymore with 5.3. I have carefully studied the manpages (sound and snd_sbc), and did not find out what I could have done wrong. Now I am in the need some information or suggestions about how to debug this problem. I did not find useful debug switches in the driver sourcecode, or other useful approach. The soundcard is ESS ES1869 based ISA bus card. It should work after loading "sound" and "snd_sbc" (and did so until 5.2.1). I do not get any errors when loading "sound" and "snd_sbc". When loading "snd_sbc", the kernel issues a one-line message that it found the ESS ES1869 (and all the io-ports and irq and dma). This message is literally the same that I was seeing since Release 4.4, so this part seems ok. I also get the interrupt 5 assinged to sbc1. But the "sound" driver does not recognize the card anymore. In /dev/sndstat it shows no devices installed, and there are no "dsp" devicenodes. But since /dev/sndstat is present (and also some sysctl variables), it seems that "sound" also got operative. There is no problem with the hardware - I can reboot to Release 4.4, and it is still working there. >From my impression, the problem could be somewhere with the "sound" driver. I would like to find out what is going wrong, but my main difficulty is I have no idea about the logical-flow-of-functionality there - especially how "sound" and "snd_sbc" are supposed to inter- operate. I reported to freebsd-multimedia, but did not get an answer. Now, before I go the hard way analyzing changes via commitlog (actually I never had reason to understand how the sound system is implemented - it just worked), I would much appreciate any idea about more straight-forward approaches. Interesting. Host can look it up: bash-2.05b$ host mr-chips-.deviantart.com mr-chips-.deviantart.com has address 69.28.181.43 But the host name is itself invalid. From RFC 1035: The labels must follow the rules for ARPANET host names. They must start with a letter, end with a letter or digit, and have as interior characters only letters, digits, and hyphen. My guess is Windows is actually munging it, when it would be better to return an error. A meta port installs a number of packages by depending on them. For example in the ports/x11/gnome2/Makefile you will find a variable "RUN_DEPENDS=" and then a long list of things. All these dependencies are installed when you "make install" but since it is a run-time dependency, nothing happens if you just type "make". What you won't see, is that each of these packages most likely depends on other packages etc. that are also installed. Tracing this till the end is hard. What may give you some idea is to install the portupgrade tools and run portupgrade -rRn gnome2 This will not install anything (-n) but recurse up and down in the dependencies to tell you what would be done. This may not show you all dependencies as portupgrade should only want to upgrade what is _not_ up to date. Regarding gnome2-power-tools: First, it may install apache as a (sub-) dependency, but apache won't start unless you start it, as such it does not introduce new network accessible services. Second: Do you actually need all that? The easiest way to keep a system clean and updated is to stay at minimal needs, install as needed. You will learn that first time you try to upgrade a major package ... Now that FreeBSD-4.11 is deprecated, it will be the last release from the 4.xx series, what is it about RELENG-4 (the 4.11-STABLE)? This build will be /newer/ than 4.11R and always will be. Yes, it is possible - this is from man sshd_config: PortSpecifies the port number that sshd listens on. The default is 22. Multiple options of this type are permitted. See also ListenAddress. I have just tested it - your sshd_config needs to include something like this: Port 22 Port etc. It works just fine: # sockstat -4l | grep sshd root sshd 38948 3 tcp4 *:*:* root sshd 38948 4 tcp4 *:22 *:* HTH Dan -- Daniel Bye PGP Key: ftp://ftp.slightlystrange.org/pgpkey/dan.asc PGP Key fingerprint: 3B9D 8BBB EB03 BA83 5DB4 3B88 86FC F03A 90A1 BE8F _ ASCII ribbon campaign ( ) - against HTML, vCards and X - proprietary attachments in e-mail / \ pgpXQ0L2J403w.pgp Description: PGP signature

I don't know if "deprecated" is the word I would use about RELENG_4 (aka 4-STABLE.) It is true that no new releases planned from that branch, and since most developers have switched over to RELENG_5 (or -CURRENT) there is little new development happening for 4.x. There is still the occasional commit going in to the RELENG_4 branch but mostly bugfixes and few if any new features (and certainly not anything that is supposed to disrupt existing configurations.) I would expect new commits to trickle in slowly to RELENG_4 for another 2-3 years or so until it is completely abandoned. (The latest commit to RELENG_3 happened in Dec. 2003 - two and half years after the last 3.x release.) Since the commit rate has gone down considerably for 4.x since 5.x was declared as -STABLE, there is really very little difference between RELENG_4 and 4.11-RELEASE at this point in time, but there is some. The advantage of running RELENG_4 instead of RELENG_4_11 is that you will get a some extra bugfixes and possibly one or two minor new features. The disadvantage is of course that some of those bugfixes may inadvartently introduce new bugs that have yet been detected. Security updates will be applied to RELENG_4 as well as to RELENG_4_11 at least until 31 Jan. 2007. Personally I would certainly choose RELENG_4 over RELENG_4_11, but if you are extremely cautious (and have not run into any of the bugs fixed in RELENG_4 but not in RELENG_4_11) you might prefer RELENG_4_11. For a new installation I would recommend the upcoming 5.4-RELEASE, but for systems that already have 4.x installed and are happy with it might make sense to stick with 4.x for a while longer. (There are also some systems where 4.x works but 5.x does not - and vice versa. That 5.x is somewhat more resource hungry than 4.x could also be a consideration very low-end systems (here defined as '486 or slower and 32MB RAM or less.)) -- Erik Trulsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

In rebuilding a kernel, how do you know exactly what modules you need? The Handbook is a good start, and a lot of them are obvious (i.e. if I have no SCSI disks, disable all SCSI modules). Others aren't so easy, particularly serial devices, and the pseudo devices. my ethernet to my laptop/getting the tcp/X11 socket up
Well, I need to get two problems off my chest, so to speak, well, really 3 problems. May as well hit the easiest first, which is getting the X11 tcp socket opened up. BACKGROUND: I want to give the database I wrote to the friend of mine I wrote it for. I got a laptop that sort of fell into my lap, but it didn't come with an ethernet, so I had a ethernet card lying around (I forget the name of the outboard cards for laptops, this is the very first time for me, using a laptop). I installed it, it worked with the rl0 driver. Sometimes. Why sometimes? Smart guy, that's question 1. The indication I get is, I get an error (tcp error) soemthing like this one below (they're not all alike): Mar 30 21:37:52 september kernel: rl0: discard frame w/o leading ethernet header (len 2 pkt len 2) Well, the result is always the same, which is that the rl0 line stops dead in it's tracks. I can do a ifconfig down/ifconfig up and clear it, but every time I do that, I take a 1 in 5 chance of getting a kernel panic. It's not something I crave to do a lot, so I can't just dismiss it by making a utility to down/up the interface. I need this fixed. My kernel is 5.3 stable. I picked it because it was the only one of all of the ones I could pick (and I did try them all) that seemed compatible not only with the ethernet card, but also the usb trackball I like (I hate mice) and that the available X for that version knows the usb drivers. Too early and it won't work with ums0. OK, I'd like suggestions from someone who knows the history, is there any easy fix for the rl0 driver I'm using, that will allow it to work stably? Anyone know of any problem like what I've described? Second set of problems is easier to describe: I want to get the tcp sockets on X turned on. I know about the -no-tcp, and there are unfortunately too many places that it could be turned off. On my server, running FreeBSD-6.0 (it's an opteron, dual) I am running a very very reent kde (damn but that compiled easily!) On the other machine, well, today it's FreeBSD-5.3 like I said. Maybe you'll change my mind. On neither machine am I running any sort of login daemon, it's just startx. I sure wish that the darned security person who got them to bias the options against running that socket would undo his work. I don't mind the option existing, but making it the default was a rotten thing to do to me. I won't listen to anyone who tells me to upgrade my laptop for the hell of it, because my app is python/gtk, and needs too many parts to work together for me to risk breaking what works today just for the hell of it. Give me a solid reason, and then I'll do it. I'm quite, *quite* willing to buy another ehternet card. The one I have is a D-Link, the dmesg reports: miibus0: on rl0 Mar 30 21:44:23 september kernel: rlphy0: on miibus0 Mar 30 21:44:23 september kernel: rlphy0: 10baseT, 10baseT-FDX, 100baseTX, 100baseTX-FDX, auto Mar 30 21:44:23 september kernel: rl0: Ethernet address: 00:0d:88:27:c4:38 OK, so I'm looking for advice on the ethernet problem, and maybe -- Chuck Robey | Interests include C & Java programming, FreeBSD, [EMAIL PROTECTED] | electronics, communications, and SF/Fantasy. I still consider myself very new to most of this, though, so I'm not certain, but I think the system should be able to determine your CPUTYPE automatically, without needing it hardcoded in make.conf. I think you should only need to use this directive if for some reason it's improperly detecting your cpu type. Hopefully someone can confirm or disprove that for you, though. Fact. At least one of them claimed it was solved in RELENG_5. Sure wish I could locate the other mails in THAT chain (I spent 20 minutes trying to). So my fix sounds like it boils down to one of two items: either getting someone who knows 5.3 better than I do to recommend a cardbus device that would be sound (a vendor) and I would run right out and buy it, or I suppose I could get the required sources burnt onto a cdrom, and get them on that laptop that way, recompile, and see about reinstalling. I want to do the minimum necessary to get it working. So, if one of you folks can recommend a cardbus card that I oughta buy, that doesn't use the rl0 driver, that would be nice. mail me a *.ko for it, and I would love you forever. Although there is a small *possibility* that some bug has managed to sneak in to RELENG_4 that is not present in RELENG_4_11, you should contrast this to the *fact* that there are bugs which has been fixed in RELENG_4, but which has not been - and will not be - fixed in RELENG_4_11. device.hints help
Hello, I have two sound cards: SiS 7012 (C-Media Electronics CMI9739 AC97 Codec) - 'snd_ich' Genius Sound Maker Value 5.1 (CMedia CMI8738) - 'snd_cmi' The first is integrated in the motherboard, and it is detected first and used as the default output device (pcm0). The second it detected after the first, so it is used as the second output device (pcm1). I want to use my second sound card as the default output device. I tried using the loader.conf variables "*_after" and "*_before", but they always load them before booting the kernel, so the integrated card is detected first and assigned to the default output device (pcm0). So I have the drivers as modules, and load the driver for the second card when booting the kernel, and then from the command line I load the driver for the integrated card. Hello, Using CPUTYPE= in make.conf causes the complier to optimize for the specific CPU. Otherwise, it does a "generic" compile that would run on any CPU. The two easiest ways to improve system performance are to build a custom kernel that has all the uneeded options and devices removed and to tweak make.conf. Before doing either, read man tuning and man make.conf. Also, to find out what all the stuff in the kernel conf does, see /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/NOTES (assuming you're running 5.x on an Intel or Intel-compatible platform. hth, stheg __ Do you Yahoo!? top display weirdness
When I run top, the summary and memory lines at the top of the display are updating in the next line down, overwriting that line. The process #'s are showing up in the state line, state #'s in the memory line, memory #'s in the swap list. I saw a post recently about something similar caused by compiling with different userland and core versions or something: this is a straight 5.3 install from the CD set. Only disk 1 was needed. This is also the 3rd install from this same disk and the other 2 system do not exhibit the incorrect behavior. 1 of the other 2 system has the same MB, drives, etc. Ideas appreciated. Setting up network
Something I've never been able to figure out. Re: Setting up network
Essentially, the host is the 'name of the machine' if you will. So if you want, you can name it betty, or uberserver1. It doesn't matter. For that fact, as far as I really know, nor does the domain matter. However commonly when naming servers and such, they have corresponding names and domains so that they can be labeled and people who need to know, know what these machines do. In short, no, the names do not matter for your internal home network. On Thu, 31 Mar 2005 16:52:52 -0500, Jonathan Arnold <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Something I've never been able to figure out. If you're using DHCP via one of the ubiquitous broadband firewall/gateway thingies from Linksys or D-Link or whoever, it really doesn't matter. However, most people like to give their machines a name, anyway, even if they don't have a domain to attach it to. You might want to get your own domain, in which case you control the names in it, or one can use dyndns.org or one of the similar sites to obtain a reversible hostname in a domain like homeip.net, even when using a dynamic IP. "Making stuff up" is ok, so long as you don't make stuff up that conflicts with properly configured names. Pretending to be a host in a domain you don't belong to is considered impolite at best, and if you have a local config problem than ends up generating errors or messages sent to the real host (think bounced mail), you will not thrill whoever it is that has to clean up the mess -- -Chuck ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Modules are not your concern, they get built anyway (or mostly .. not sure but probably not each and every possible module gets built). The idea is that if you for example need support for a new soundcard, you can just load the module (loader.conf) without needing to recompile the kernel. On an IDE/ATA system I generally turn down the scsi delay (I always do) and remove: - all scsi raid cards and support - all ethernet cards, both pci/isa and usb except the one(s) I have (most can be loaded as a module also); beware whether it needs mii too - from the pseudo devices ppp/tun/slip as I'm connected via ethernet (cable) sometimes I disable ipv6 and gif/faith, sometimes I don't - all CPUs except the one you actually have (performance!) I also remove most scsi support but beware that cdrecord (atapicam) requires the basic scsi devices, as does umass (camera's, cf fards, usb scanners, ..). Generally unless you need to _add_ something to your kernel you don't really need to stray from GENERIC at all. If you want to have a kernel at least tuned for your CPU and without a lot of stuff you don't have anyway, do the above). But depending on the purpose of the box you can strip out quite a lot. Check NOTES, both in /usr/src/sys/conf and /usr/src/sys//conf. (on FreeBSD4 that is LINT). Also most if not all drivers and devices have manual pages and from the synopsis you can see which other devices or options come with them. Re: How to find needed modules for rebuilding kernel
Thanks for the info. My terminology is off...apparently what I really meant is I'm wondering what drivers I need to compile into the kernel. I've done what you've suggested - removed SCSI support, all of the NIC drivers besides the one I need, etc. I'm just wondering how I can find out EXACTLY what I need in there, so I can have as little as possible. It's a server, so it has a pretty narrow purpose, and I'd like to keep the kernel as small and fast as I can. Surely it's not going to run out of memory or disk space any time soon with a few kB more or less for the kernel. Like I said there _is_ documentation ranging from abundant to sparce to terse to the plain source. The latter is to be taken literally... some things are only documented in the sources, if you're lucky in a line of normal text in a header file (e.g. with device drivers). Reading NOTES would be a start. But I'd like to caution you not to put too much efford in this. The point is you only need to go that far if really needed, and I'm quite sure it's not. It would hardly matter. If you want to do it the hard way, well then see the above for the hard way :) You might be more interested in tuning(7) and the various device.hints to get the most out of your hardware. The "smallest size/footprint kernel" used to be a common issue when people had small drives, little RAM and had to use floppies. Also, if you want a server that runs well, invest some time into the configuration of your services. Things like maximum files, maximum forks, timeouts, ... Instead of executing it as a children (separated) process, so when the process finishes it returns back to the shell (like typing a command). So when the shell replaces itself with 'unclutter', it is not the shell anymore, so it never comes back to execute 'enlightenment'. The solution can be to run the first command in the background (apart from the shell) like this: unclutter -root & exec enlightenment See sh(1) (section 'exec' and 'jobs'). You haven't given alot of detail. That said I have an epox(socket A nforce2) and it seems they use the microsoft acpi stuff, which sucks. I have sent some problems reports to them, even one with a phatched asl I did myself. I got no real response, they said we support windows, not linux. Hold on, LINUX! I told I run FreeBSD! O well, I would recommend staying away from epox if you wnat to run a non-ms os. Have you tried the acpidump yet? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Not necessarily true. How about a web application? This would mean that the machines would only need to be able to run a web browser. IF they are very old you could install FreeBSD on them. Even a 200MHZ machine can run FreeBSD semi decently with X on it. It's some bunch of DBFs with associated indexes If you give me the extensions I can take a reasonable guess at what they are. You CAN copy them. You just need to write a simple program to open them and copy them. Should be near trivial once you have whatever they used. Given the clients need to be up 24/7, I though of filesystem snapshots as the only solution. With DBFs that won't work. You will very likely have corrupted headers if you do a copy/sync/snapshot depending on how busy your system is and how often writes are done to it. I'll keep trying a bit more, since it seems doing them on a daily schedule doesn't do any harm. The problems so far have only arisen when I manually started a backup script (possibly interrupting it, cleaning up, and starting again). And you say this system is 24/7? DBFs are not exactly very good at this.. specially if you have many deletes. Is this mostly a read only or write once only type of system? P.S. The firm who sold that crap, also implemented the file server before mine; just without any RAID and/or backup facility. These data are vital to that business. Many times it's a matter of how much a client wants to pay. On the last server I setup given the option of getting a RAID controller (IDE) for under $200 the client said no. You can only educate and advice a client so much if they are not willing to listen. The cost of unforseen crashes is usually far off in a small business owner's mind. -- http://stringsutils.com Utility for developers. Bring up all the file systems manually, and you should be set to edit any file with TERM=cons25. This should be something like: 1. Start in single-user mode. When you enter the root shell of the single user mode, there's only one filesystem (the root filesystem) and this one is mounted read-only. 2. If your system clock is set to local time (and not UTC), run adjkerntz. # adjkerntz -i 3. Do minimal sanity checks for all file systems: # fsck -p 4. Remount the root file system as read-write: # mount -u / 5. Mount all the rest, and then set your TERM to cons25 (TERM should be set IIRC only after termcap is available): # mount -va # TERM=cons25 ; export TERM 6. Edit your /etc/rc.local with any editor you prefer. 7. Exit the single user shell and let the system go on booting in multi-user mode, as usual. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Email messages are not a good medium for sending huge files. Many mail servers limit the size of the messages they accept to something like 1 MB, so you'd have to split the movie in an extremely inconvenient, huge number of short parts. There are other ways to do file transfers. FTP is, in fact, called ``File Transfer Protocol''. You could always fire up an ftpd in read-only, anonymous mode and invite your friend to download the file from you. > I know i know i read the man but its like this > [] long IMHO, the Handbook chapter on electronic email is more useful for Sendmail beginners, but I doubt people read it these days; which is rather unfortunate, given the amount of effort freebsd-doc people have put into writing it. - Giorgos ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
