Pike (lang/pike78) on FreeBSD 7.2

2009-06-29 Thread Arjan van Leeuwen
Hi,

Since I upgraded to FreeBSD 7.2 (from 7.1), my Pike installation has been
hanging regularly. When this happens, there is always one pike process in
[wait] state and one in [umtxn] (from top).

Thinking I might solve it by recompiling, I tried removing it and compiling
from ports. However, the installation from ports hangs while installing with
exactly the same problem.

I've tried recompiling my world to make sure everything is in sync (some
people reported problems like this with other applications because of libthr
/ libc being out of sync), and I've tried recompiling all ports that pike
depends on, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Arjan

I use Pike frequently on 7.2 systems, but haven't seen this problem yet.
You should probably ask this on the Pike mailinglist, where the
developers may come up with suggestions to further investigate this,
http://pike.ida.liu.se/forums/

A new Pike 7.8 release is due "real soon now" by the way, and I will
update the FreeBSD port once it's released (and it works for me).
For now you might try to install the release candidate from
http://pike.ida.liu.se/pub/pike/beta/7.8.316/Pike-v7.8.316.tar.gz
to see if that one still has the same issues.

Is pike multithreaded ? If yes, does it forks ?

This might be the issue fixed in

Thanks, that was it! I should have tried updating FreeBSD before spending
way too much time trying to debug pike :)

call for testing: print/hplip update

2009-06-29 Thread Dmitry Marakasov
Hi!

Chris Petrik made an update for print/hplip
port to version 3.9.6. The maintainer didn't respond, so I thought
it'd be nice to test the update before committing and also decide
whether it requires a repocopy to preserve current version of hplip.
The port is here:

I have the latest version available in ports installed. I will be glad
to test this newer version. I do have one question though; what is a
'repocopy'? My funky Webster doesn't list it. Would I be correct in
assuming that you are referring to backing up the installed version
in case it has to be reinstalled if the newer version bombs out?

devel/boost: new patch for testing update to 1.39

2009-06-29 Thread Alexander Churanov
Hi folks!

I've made several changes to new set of boost ports. Please, review
them and test new set of ports, if possible.

The updated diff is at
http://alexanderchuranov.com/boost-port/boost-2009-06-29-14-38.diff
The updated tarball is at
http://alexanderchuranov.com/boost-port/boost-ports-200906291349.tar.bz2

The procedure is as follows:

1) Download the tarball and unpack under /usr/ports/devel
2) Go to /usr/ports, download and apply the patch
3) Remove 'devel/boost' and 'devel/boost-python' ports
4) Rebuild ports

The changes are:

1) Old ports removed from devel/Makefile, new added
2) URI for downloading source tarball is corrected
3) Python versioning issue in boost-python-libs is fixed
4) Minor changes in Makefiles of ports that were recently updated

Sincerely,
Alexander Churanov,
maintainer of devel/boost-*

Re: Mysq server 5.4 port

2009-06-29 Thread Ian Lord
It's just that we have a software using mysql as a backend and we have a
performance problem that was fixed in mysql 5.4.

We compiled it by hand and we are satisfied with the stability of it.

We would like to have it before the 10th of july because we are planning a
maintenance window on the 17th and we want 7 days to test it out in the field
before we roll it in production...

We could compile it manually, but for future upgrades it's easier to have the
port system so we would like to do a modest contribution to the cause to have
it sooner :)

Thanks

Sergey, thank you so much for pointing out the DISABLE_VULNERABILITIES
environment variable. This is the method that got me past the problem, though
I used it to upgrade only linux-pango and those of its dependencies that hadn't
yet been upgraded. After that, I unset that variable and resumed the upgrade
of the rest of the software dependent upon perl.

Okay. Thanks for that explanation. How about a cautionary note to that
effect in /usr/ports/UPDATING? Maybe a suggestion also that people not attempt
the perl upgrade unless they really need the newer version?

Oohh, wow. Looks like you got rather more out of my message than I put
into it. No offense was intended, I assure you, but rather expression of a
sense of disappointment that the FreeBSD project considers implementation of
all the latest and greatest networking facilities and features, as well as
new stuff in other areas, to the exclusion of fixing the fragility of the
ports system for major release after major release. This is not to say
anything disparaging about the implementation of all those nice features, even
though I doubt that the vast majority of FreeBSD users ever use a lot of them.
The ports subsystem is a major part of what makes FreeBSD an option for many
people and is very heavily and widely used, so it's a shame to see its
problems neglected for so long.

Ah. Then you do understand why so many of us run into so many problems
in trying to use it.
Anyway, there is good news to report this time regarding my trials with
the perl upgrade. Sometime Thursday afternoon, I appear to have encountered
the last "make deinstall && make reinstall" case, after which the upgrade
(still using portmaster) ran another five or six hours and completed normally.
Many thanks to Sergey Dyatko, Doug Barton, and other respondents for
helping me get this done!
Now I am left with a couple of questions in dealing with future ports
and packages updates. The first is, which is the best tool for doing updates
with a preference for using packages rather than rebuilds of ports (a la
"portupgrade -aP")? The man page for portmaster doesn't seem to allow a way
to use packages at all, even if they are as current as their corresponding
ports. The man page for portmanager also shows no option to use packages at
all. Is portupgrade the only tool that can do this? My concern is over
ports that are infamously painful to rebuild (e.g., openoffice.org,
math/atlas). (X.org can also be a bad batch of stuff to rebuild, mostly in
terms of the time and spac

Ok, please close PR 136117. I just submitted PR 136174, which does the
following:

* Upgrade port from version 0.5.0.45 to 0.5.0.82
* Add option to enable aim-toc service (default off)
* Add option to enable icq-toc service (default off)

My preferred quotation of Robert Louis Stevenson is "You cannot
make an omelette without breaking eggs". Not because I like the
omelettes, but because I like the sound of eggs being broken.
