Re: Porters Handbook section 4.4

2017-10-11 Thread Mark Linimon
I had not commented before because I am on a long road trip.

But I'm very glad you have taken on this work. I had always wanted to
do something very much like this but never made the time to do it.

My old thought was that we have conflated "User's Guide to Ports" and
"Ports Reference Handbook". Certainly the bulk of the existing text is
the latter type (even if not well organized; it kind of "grew".)

I'm indifferent if the Guide parts (basically what you have been working
on) remain in the PH or become a separate piece. But depending on the
degree of rewrite, do you think that might be easier? It's certainly
true that the current PH is too bloated.

I won't have the cycles to look at your work for another week or two,
so consider this just "a voice from the peanut gallery".

It claims to "provide code reviews, image mocks, voting, and other

intended more for "problem reports". OTOH for small patches there
is an overlap.

These days the documentation people mostly use Phabricator instead

The separation is kind of artificial and still a little controversial.

While I agree with this, I'd rather let people know that they should
feel free to update content without stressing out over the markup.
Fixing the markup is a mechanical thing that doc committers can/should
take care of.

I'm much more concerned about getting our content fixed up :-)

Unfortunately this is not limited to doc PRs. We do a little bit
better at ports due to the "maintainer" concept.

We definitely need more people working on both documentation and
getting PRs fixed.

> Parts of the Handbook are outdated

I'd like to see this situation get fixed. OTOH I am personally
overcommitted.

If you see anything that is especially stuck, feel free to add me to
the Cc: line.

It is also fair to note that many doc committers are using Phabricator
(https://reviews.freebsd.org) for patch submissions. My view is that
it's slightly better for patch reviews and Bugzilla is slightly better
for actual bug submissions.

translations [was: Re: The Italian translation has not been updated since 2008]

I know that the translation projects are a thankless task.

What I'd like to discuss is where our efforts should go. I would
suggest we prioritize things that work as introductions for those new
to FreeBSD:

 - https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/index.html
 - https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/contributing/index.html

and then possibly

 -
https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/mailing-list-faq/index.html

IMHO the internal project documentation should not be a priority. The
translations will most likely stay out of date, as they are now.

Nor, do I think some of the very technical articles/books should be, for
the very same reason.

I think the above should be reasonable goals. What do other people think?

[A separate topic would be about getting rid of antiquated documentation that
is in English :-) e.g. pmake. I'll raise that elsewhere.]

Please attempt to create a wiki account (we prefer the style NeelChauhan).
It will partially create the account and then error out on the captcha.
Ignore that and send an email to wiki-ad...@freebsd.org with the account

Short answer: we do't automatically sync with one another.

Longer answer: it would take some investigation to find out if one or
the other of the 3 has a "canonical" set of manpages that the others
have copied. So, the best way is to open a PR for each.

 Thanks.

 Ben,

Okay -- I see what you mean--I was focused on that one piece, and
didn't note the other uses of "network address".

I think that what makes the page a little confusing is that it uses
both terms "Internet address" and "network address" without making it
clear that they are synonymous (and thus leaving the potential for the
reader to think they are not). This might not normally be problematic,
but given that the page is also talking about the 'network' and 'host'
components of the address, there is scope for confusion. Not a big
thing, I guess, but FWIW that's the confusion that I tried to avoid in
the Linux man page by using the term "binary address"; see
 http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man3/inet.3.html#DESCRIPTION

 Cheers,

 Michael

So, in theory, an attempt to parse /etc/fstab would be
an attempt to detect the type; however, my quick glance
at the code showed no real parsing of fstab. But in
my case, I followed to both the T and t flags, and just
glanced at what was done would they not be specified.
That was really as far as I got, and I attempted to use
very generic language in case it only does one, or the
 other, or both. :)

 Reasonable?
