building cvsup from ports
Hello all, Sounds like a silly place to post this but...here goes. I'm getting errors compiling cvsup from ports. The ports tree installed is the default coming with the 11/12/01 snapshot. I want would use CVS, but I don't know how (and yet I call my self a computer science student). It complains about nfs/nfs.h not existing (I checked, it doesn't). This is the first thing I have built from ports except X in -current, so all of the dependencies besides X were built with this port during "make install". I remeber seeing this post on stable a while ago, but can't find the message for the life or me. The error is appended for amusment to those individuals who understand such things. regards, Galen Sampson # cd /usr/ports/net/cvsup # make install To build this port without X11 (and without the GUI), define "WITHOUT_X11". ===> Extracting for cvsup-16.1e >> Checksum OK for cvsup-snap-16.1e.tar.gz. ===> cvsup-16.1e depends on file: /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3formsvbt.so.7 - not found ===>Verifying install for /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3formsvbt.so.7 in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms ===> Extracting for pm3-forms-1.1.15 >> No MD5 checksum file. ===> pm3-forms-1.1.15 depends on file: /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3vbtkit.so.7 - not found ===>Verifying install for /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3vbtkit.so.7 in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui ===> Extracting for pm3-gui-1.1.15 >> No MD5 checksum file. ===> pm3-gui-1.1.15 depends on file: /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3tcp.so.7 - not found ===>Verifying install for /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3tcp.so.7 in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net ===> Extracting for pm3-net-1.1.15 >> No MD5 checksum file. ===> pm3-net-1.1.15 depends on file: /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3.so.7 - not found ===>Verifying install for /usr/local/lib/m3/FreeBSD4/libm3.so.7 in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-base ===> Installing for pm3-base-1.1.15 cd boot-FreeBSD4/m3core/FreeBSD4; gmake -f make.boot "CC=cc" "CFLAGS=-O -pipe " "AS=as" "ASFLAGS=" "AR=ar" "ARFLAGS=rv" "RANLIB=touch" "EXTRALIBS=-lm" "LDFLAGS=" gmake[1]: Entering directory `/usr/ports/lang/pm3-base/work/pm3-1.1.15/boot-FreeBSD4/m3core/FreeBSD4' cc -O -pipe-c -o RTHeapDepC.o RTHeapDepC.c RTHeapDepC.c:101: nfs/nfs.h: No such file or directory RTHeapDepC.c: In function `mount': RTHeapDepC.c:719: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type RTHeapDepC.c:719: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type RTHeapDepC.c:720: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type RTHeapDepC.c:720: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type RTHeapDepC.c:721: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type RTHeapDepC.c:721: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type gmake[1]: *** [RTHeapDepC.o] Error 1 gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/ports/lang/pm3-base/work/pm3-1.1.15/boot-FreeBSD4/m3core/FreeBSD4' gmake: *** [boot] Error 2 *** Error code 2 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-base. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-base. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-base. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-net. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-gui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/pm3-forms. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/net/cvsup. __ Do You Yahoo!? netstat -a -f inet sometimes leads to kernel panic
Hello all, I have -current source and kernel from 11/12/2001. The source tree is that installed from /stand/sysinstall of that date. I have rebuilt the world using it, followed by the kernel. All appears well. Today I tried started up gdm for the first time. After it was running I switched to a virtual terminal and endered "#>netstat -a -f inet" from a root prompt. The lines "Panic: too many open files, syncing, automatic reboot in 15 seconds" appeared, followed by a reboot. I am new to this, indeed this is the first panic I have experienced. I could find nothing in the log to provide more useful information. I also realize that perhaps this bug is known. Infomation about when to submit to this list, where/how to find information about previous bugs, and how to retrieve information about a crash so developers can fix bugs would be most useful. regards, Galen __ Do You Yahoo!? Fatal Double Fault
Hello all, I was in X today and the computer spontaneously restarted so I didn't see and panic. After a restart fsck started in the background (I'm using soft updates on all of my filesystems). While trying to determing what caused the crash by looking in the system logs the computer crashed again. The message on the console was:
Non-network Fatal Trap 12
Hello all, Today I cannot boot into my machine with either kernel or kernel.old. Both panic after trying to mount the filesystems. "kernel.old" is a generic kernel, but "kernel" is a generic kernel from 11/12 source. Neither kernel is a debug kernel. This panic does not seem to relate to the one posted earlier (fatal trap 12 resulting from network access) as it happens at different places with different programs during init scripts execution. Each of these kernels worked well until this morning (after a clean shutdown last night). Thoughts or requests for more information welcome. One of the many attempts to start the kernel is below. A guess as to the root of the trouble is filesystem corruption (softupdates + deffered fsck checking). Re: Non-network Fatal Trap 12
Hello all, Your input was most appreciated (I hadn't thought to boot to single user to run fsck). When I ran fsck -p all filesystems generated output as if the filesystems were clean. After attempting to bring it to multi-user mode it passes through init scripts, but panics where the login prompt should be. I've never experienced filesystem corruption before. I'm curious as to what the cause of my problem is. Does this sound like filesystem corruption, or some other problem? Galen __ Do You Yahoo!? Buy the perfect holiday gifts at Yahoo! RCNG diskless booting bug in /etc/rc.d/fsck
Hello all, I recently updated my world to a releng5 source tree from 12/27. I noticed that almost all of the RCNG scripts work perfectly for diskless (PXE) booting. There is one minor problem that can easily be fixed. Upon booting the rc scripts immediately initiate fsck of file systems. Since all every file system in a diskless case is NFS except the memory disks, and since fsck_nfs does not exist, the boot process stops and exits to an sh shell. This can be fixed by adding the flag -t nonfs to the fsck script in /etc/rc.d. Regards, Galen Sampson __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. "The World" and MIT krb5
Hello all, I have installed the MIT krb5 port. I installed this port and left KRB5_HOME=/usr/local (this is where I installed the port) in make.conf. I assumed that building the world would use this variable and link the world (ssh[d], telnet[d], login, ...) against the libraries installed by the port. That didn't seem to happen. I didn't want to define MAKE_KERBEROS5 in make.conf because I already installed the port and I thought that defining MAKE_KERBEROS5 would overwrite some of the port. 1) Are the worlds daemons written to link against kerberos (as apposed to the heimdal replacements replacing their traditional counterparts)? 2) If 1), is there a way to link the world against the port? If so, how? 3) If 2) is possible, is it a bad idea? 4) Are people that use the MIT kerberos port replacing their daemons (telnet [d], login, ftp[d]) with the ports versions with good success? I'd imagine that since the port is installed in /usr/local things might not work so great if /usr/local can't be accessed (because of mount failure, etc.) unless the daemons are statically linked (NO THIS IS NOT A THREAD ABOUT STATIC LINKING, THIS IS AN OBSERVATION ABOUT THIS PORT AND A POSSIBLE ANSWER TO 3). gdb: apropos core dump
Hello all, I was recently playing around with gdb. I do not use it much but I found that it had an apropos command. I hoped that apropos would make it quicker for me to find information about gdb's commands so I wouldn't have to go hunting in info. Turns out there is a bug in gdb on current where apropos causes gdb to dump core. I did not build my gdb with debugging symbols but the problem can be reproduced easily: Script started on Sat Jun 28 18:38:10 2003 [101] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> gdb GNU gdb 5.2.1 (FreeBSD) Copyright 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Mergemaster Bug (Though not a serious one)
Hello All, I just cvsup'd -current last night and ran "make buildworld, make buildkernel, make installkernel, reboot, make installworld, mergemaster" (thus updating my system from a May -current). One thing that I found interesting during mergemaster was the grouping of changes. For instance mergemaster determined that my /etc/group file was lacking some groups. The 4 groups that needed changing were on adjacent lines. Mergemaster gave me the option of merging all 4 changes at once as apposed to merging the changes 1 line at a time. Example: Existing /etc/group | New /etc/group __|_ wheel:root, galen | wheel:root foo:x,y | foo: mergemaster would show something like above and I would have to choose which of the (group of two lines) I want. IIRC the old mergemaster merged changes like this one line at a time. I know mergemaster has been changed since May (been rewritten to use sh instead of perl). I looked at the man page, didn't see any relevant options to this situation. I don't know if this is intended behavior, if a fix was recently posted, or it is pilot error on my part. I just thought I would let someone know in case this needs fixing for 5.0-release. regards, Galen Sampson __ Do you Yahoo!? Hello all, After looking in the mailling list archives for problems with mergemaster and reading the man page I noticed the -p option. I have been building the world with the sequence (as denoted in the handbook section 21.4): "make buildworld, make buildkernel, make installkernel, reboot, make installworld" If "make buildworld, ..., reboot, make installkernel" ^ mergemaster -p, is the propper way to upgrade then that information could be added to the handbook as it is not there. Internal Compiler Error (not from ports)
Hello all, After updating to -current sources last night I found that I can reproduce an internal compiler error with my own source code. I'm not sure if it is related to the internal compiler error people are having with the ports are not. the command: g++ -Wall -c btree.cpp generates the error (source code attached). To help track this down line 12 of btree.h is commented out. Uncommenting this line allows the compiler to produce a .o file. rcng script bugs
Hello all, I recently decided that it would be a good idea to set up a diskless workstation at home. While I was working on setting it up I ran into numerous problems with the rc scripts, particularly chick-and-egg type mounting problems. However I also noticed some problems with scripts that are important to everyone, not just diskless users. /etc/rc.d/named: The pid file used by the rc script uses the file /var/run/named.pid for use in reloading, restarting, etc. The default named.conf file in /etc/namedb contains explicitly sets the pid file to /var/run/named/pid. I assume that the reason FreeBSD puts the pid file in /var/run/named instead of just /var/run is because of permissions (the default rc configuration starts named with '-u bind -g bind') and thus could not write to /var/run. I propose the following change to /etc/rc.d/named 17c17 < pidfile="/var/run/${name}.pid" --- > pidfile="/var/run/${name}/pid" in order to match the default named.conf file. /etc/rc.d/network1: When using a diskless configuration this file took the interface offline, preventing the machine from booting. I noticed that a change has been added to check if an interface is up and skip configuring it if it is. Instead of using grep it is possible to use ifconfig's -d option (see man page) to only list interfaces marked as down. This is my change for /etc/rc.d/network1 140c140 < network_interfaces="`ifconfig -l -d`" --- > network_interfaces="`ifconfig -l`" 148a149,153 > if ifconfig ${ifn} | grep -s UP, > /dev/null 2>&1; then > # Interface is already up, so ignore it. > continue; > fi > Hope this helps someone. regards, Galen Sampson __ Do you Yahoo!? named timeouts on localhost
Hello all, I recently during a configuration of a diskless workstation I decided to set up named to use with the isc-dhcpd3 port. I have configured named to my liking. Unfortunately when I try to connect using ssh the connection times out because sshd cannot resolve the name of the connecting host. If I log into the machine running named I found that if I type nslookup I get nameserver timeouts. If I type nslookup on another machine on the network (which uses the machine in question as its nameserver) all queries work exactly as expected. When I run tcpdump -i lo0 I find that the queries are sent. Named logs the query (query loggin is turned on) so I know named recieves the queries. Unfortunately named never responds. I do have a filewall (ipfw), but I flushed all rules, and looked at 'ipfw show' before and after a query to localhost and no packets are denied. I am stumped. extended attribute files sizes
Hello all, I am curious about the file sizes of the backing files for extend attributes. I have compiled a custom kernel that has both extended attribute support and acl support. I can sucessfully add and remove acls for files. I am quite impressed. I used a sparse backing file (i.e. no -p option when creating the backing file) to see if acl's would work. I am aware of the security implications of this, but my only goal was to test them out. The size of the backing file when used with -p and 388 bytes is too large of an overhead for me to live with anyhow. I am curious about the file sizes displayed in 'ls -l' for these sparse backing files. The sparse files are indeed small. Unfortunately I see strange results with 'ls -l'. An example... /usr/home/.attribute/system> ls -l total 49 -rw--- 1 root wheel 544094812 Feb 28 23:13 posix1e.acl_access -rw--- 1 root wheel 12 Feb 28 23:05 posix1e.acl_default /usr/home/.attribute/system> du -h 50K. /usr/home/.attribute/system> Is there any reason the file is shown as being 544,094,812 bytes? I'm sure it is actually only 50K. Just curious if this is something a developer should look at before the release (this is obviously quite minor compared to other things). SIGHUP during local package initialization
Hello all, I have recently experienced some interesting behavior. During the boot process multiple programs seem to be receiving a SIGHUP. I have the stable version of samba installed from ports, and this causes nmbd to core dump during the machine startup. I have talked with the samba people about this and donated the core file to them. They did feel that it was strange that nmbd would be getting a signal during startup though. This problem was hard to track down. It seems that it programs only receive this SIGHUP sometimes. My only thought to the intermitant occurance is that something is SIGHUPing all of the processes, but sometimes local initialization starts before this happens. My /var/log/messages showed that samba and cyrus (my only programs started during init that were not part of the base system) both caught this signal. This should be a trivial task for me to track down. Unfortunately I'm having problems. My main method of searching was performing grep for "kill" in the /etc directory. This did not yield anything promising. I was wondering if someone could give me hints about tracking this problem down. regards, Galen __ Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo! Hello all, I read here http://www.freebsd.org/smp/index.html in the known bugs section that "Serial gdb does not work at 115200 baud". I found no open reports in the gnats database at the main site. Is this statement still true for current? Going to try gcc 3.1 :). regards, Galen Sampson __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! It turns out I ran the following sequence: buildworld (failed), buildworld -DNO_WERROR, shutdown now, buildkernel -DNO_WERROR, installkernel, installworld, shutdown -r now (su error after reboot), mergemaster (still error), and after a restart all was well. Don't mind shooting myself in the feet...just interested in the development process of large projects. I'm a senior CS major graduating in June. This is just a hobby. Pthreads
Hello all, Experiencing some troubles with pthreads building ports. An example: configure: error: --with-pthreads specified for a system without pthread suppor t ===> Script "configure" failed unexpectedly. Please report the problem to [EMAIL PROTECTED] [maintainer] and attach the "/usr/ports/www/mozilla/work/mozilla/config.log" including the output of the failure of your make command. Also, it might be a good idea to provide an overview of all packages installed on your system (e.g. an `ls /var/db/pkg`). *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/www/mozilla. Others seem effected as well. Build system is "FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #0: Fri May 10 21:04:46 PDT 2002" with source from 10am that day. Galen __ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo!
