State-Changed-Why:
this is not just possible, it does happen frequently. I'm seeing this @ work
several times a week.
If a script fires a signal to reboot and a few moments later, another
instruction tells init to just shutdown, init will forget about the reboot.
I've created a patch for that problem, which solves that problem (stress tested
my notebook with that):

Re: kern/149803: [patch] loader: set vfs.mount.rootfrom using label

2010-08-19 Thread vwe
Synopsis: [patch] loader: set vfs.mount.rootfrom using label

State-Changed-From-To: open->feedback
State-Changed-By: vwe
State-Changed-When: Thu Aug 19 19:40:56 UTC 2010
State-Changed-Why:
Thomas,
I tend to close this PR but would like to discuss that before.
A lot of machines I'm responsible for, do not have an /etc/fstab on the boot
filesystem at all, so loader(8) does not see anything at all.

If vfs.root.mountfrom is properly set, neither loader(8) nor the kernel
require any entries to find the root filesystem.

Thus, these machines boot and find the root filesystem without user
intervention and without an /etc/fstab.

All it takes is the correct filesystem type and device path to the device that
contains the root filesystem and that all can be set by loader.conf(5).
So in the end, what your PR is all about can be done without any code changes.
A code change for a problem that can be solved w/o a code change is IMHO
a KISS violation.

You can also use a glabel'd root filesystem. It's devicename at the mount
prompt is something like "ufs:ufs/MYLABELEDROOT". It just requires
geom_label to be loaded at boot time.

If you're able to let your machine mount the root fs by just using proper
loader.conf settings, I would like to close this PR.

I'm wondering if you're able to set your root fs to be mounted at boot time,
too?

please check your USB boot media and your BIOS settings. boot0cfg and every
other
piece of code heavily relies on correct BIOS implementation. In your case it
seems,
the BIOS doesn't feel, your USB media might be bootable at all.
If BIOS feels, your USB media is bootable, it will simulate it as a legacy
device
that is accessible to boot0cfg and friends.

As this issue is clearly neither a usb(4) nor a kernel problem, we're closing
this PR.
Please feel free to write to our fine mailing lists if you have problems

To me it looks like you screwed up your PATH and thus you cannot expect to
start the right binaries if you do this. For periodic /etc/crontab is the right
place to set PATH.
For a user .profile or .cshrc it's not recommended to screw up PATH that way.
You may risk a lot of problems more, not just with periodic and it's scripts.
As I don't think there's much room for an official fix to change this, I'm

State-Changed-When: Sat Aug 21 19:42:44 UTC 2010
State-Changed-Why:
I'm somewhat undecided about this report.
IMO if a tool is being told to do one thing and it can't be done, it can be
seen as a failure. If install is able to install a file / directory but isn't
able to set modes or owner (when told do set them), it should be seen as a
failed job (do everything right or signal error, but not do half the way right).

Changing that may break a lot of places where install is being used.
I've created a patch for that which is signalling a failure if mode or owner
can't be set only when -T has been given.

The patch can be found at:
http://people.freebsd.org/~vwe/files/patches/pr139314_xinstall.diff
but I'm really not happy about that.
Either use something similar to my patch or we can close this PR as WONTFIX.

Alex,
you're just seeing a warning. Nothing bad happens if /tmp/hostid can't be
written.
The hostid is also stored in the sysctl MIB. If have no idea, who's reading
/tmp/hostid. The rcorder can't be changed as some filesystem tools need it,
so it must be called early.

Vladislav,
w/o a backtrace or any other information, it's quite hard to tell where
the problem might come from.

Your screenshot suggests, there's a NULL pointer causing the trouble.

Can you please try at first the following command and post us it's output:
addr2line -e /boot/kernel/kernel.symbols 0x806aa114

If your kernel config is near GENERIC, the problem might be in
sys/net80211/ieee80211_node.c:2328

Having a backtrace would make things simpler. If you're brave enough, you
may try to get the kernel dump onto a usb thumb drive (I'm using this for
embedded machines, where I don't have the space to store dumps).
It works find, just take a look at dumpon(8).

If you got a dump, please use the kernel debugger to get the backtrace.

Vladislav,

please forgive me being stupid. I should have seen in my crystal ball
that you're unable to access your usb ports.

Anyway, I'm unable to crash my machine (just tested):

# uname -a
FreeBSD leto.sz.vwsoft.com 9.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT #0 r211914:
Sat Aug 28 14:54:58 UTC 2010
vwe...@leto.sz.vwsoft.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64

with net/ladvd just a few minutes installed before. ladvd doesn't run
but it doesn't crash my machine.

Still, we need a backtrace. You may want to make sure, your kernel
sources and ports tree are up to date.

the answer to your problem is in the output you were quoting:
"SEARCH_DIR("/lib"); SEARCH_DIR("/usr/lib");"
Just give ld(1) the additional search path using -L and you're done.
The optimal place to set -L is in your makefile. It often works that way.
AFAICT there's no ld.so.conf support for fbsd.

Synopsis: [panic] Panic when installing FreeBSD-8.1-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1

State-Changed-From-To: open->feedback
State-Changed-By: vwe
State-Changed-When: Sun Aug 15 21:03:12 UTC 2010
State-Changed-Why:
Vladislav,
I think you've got your screenshots wrong. You state, you've disabled ACPI (at
the fbsd boot loader, IIR) but the screenshot show ACPI errors.
Please try to fix your BIOS first and then try to run FreeBSD. Our experience
shows, there's a lot of broken ACPI implementations out there. Most likely,
you've got one.
Please feed back if you still have problems booting FreeBSD with an up to date,
fixed BIOS. Please contact ASUS support if you can't find one.

Synopsis: [request] dhclient(8): DHCP can make one interface to have multiple
IP addresses

State-Changed-From-To: open->suspended
State-Changed-By: vwe
State-Changed-When: Sun Aug 15 21:09:54 UTC 2010
State-Changed-Why:
Jin, I think most developers will agree with the current behavior of dhclient.
On the other side, I can really understand your point. Best would be to have it
in the hand of the user to have just one single IP address on a DHCP configured
interface, so it needs a parameter to dhclient.
Please feel free to send in patches. Until one is attached, we're putting this
PR on hold.

stdint.h is symlinked to sys/stdint.h so there should be no reason we cannot
commit this. It's safely symlinked for a buildworld but kernel sources do not
have to be touched.

This wasn't a gcc bug, but a runtime library bug. I'm sure it's been fixed for
RELENG_7 between 7.1-R and 7.2-R and for 8-CURRENT (and up) as I was
experiencing the same.
If somebody need some deeper insight, it would take me 2 hours to find the
commit that fixed this.

which in bootverbose prints a short message before probing and before attaching
the device.
