I should add: that was with drm-61-kmod-6.1.128.1500034_2.

Historic

includes a hint that was not taken to the FreeBSD Handbook: 

> … i915kms … a flash of the console when the display driver is switched. …

I see no flash, from which I assume that whilst the module does load, it is not
effective. 

 in the
session at 12:34 today, in Konsole I loaded i915kms (without preloading
amdgpu). Plasma remained usable until I remotely restarted SDDM. Result: a
black screen.
