I had hoped John's patch was in FreeBSD-15.0-CURRENT but it wasn't (as of June 20th snapshot) so I ended up adding the patch and doing the buildworld, buildkernel, installkernel and installworld process with FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE. I also second the point about the /boot/device.hints in Comment 45. At first I tried to reboot with an unmodified /boot/device.hints file, then I had to use loader prompt "3" to add the "hint.uart.1.disabled=1" in order to boot properly. Lesson learned. Slightly OT: why is the uart thing still necessary? I needed to do that on all computers that I installed FreeBSD on in the last couple of years.
