[Evolution] Notification on new e-mail

2016-01-11 Thread ThePsionic

Hello all,

I just started using Evolution and haven't found a way to make it pop up
a notification whenever new e-mails are received. Mail Notification is
no longer an option since it has been unmaintained since 2008 and does
not work on my Linux Mint 17.3 64-bit install. Are there any
alternatives to this, or does Evolution notify upon incoming mails by
itself now? Cheers in advance.

You will need to tell us what version of Evolution you are using.

And in this case, the desktop you are using as well is of interest.

You don't say what version of Evolution you have (Help->About). You
also don't say what desktop you use. This is relevant because Evo
stores passwords using the Gnome keyring system and if you aren't using
Gnome you have to work round this.

Evolution uses the Gnome desktop notification system for new mail
alerts.  Some configuration is possible at

Edit -> Plugins -> Mail Notification

(at least that's where it is in 3.18.x - I think 3.10 was the same, but
that version is old and unsupported now)

I have no idea how Cinnamon works or if it can use the Gnome alerts -
you'll have to ask on the relevant support forum.

Ah, I downloaded the version I have from Mint's software manager, which
currently hosts 3.10. Checking out Ubuntu's package listings (since Mint
is based off Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) it says that this is the latest version
available for 14.04 and that 3.18.x isn't supported until Xenial
(16.04). Is there any way I can get 3.18.x running on my machine?

(P.S. Cinnamon is based on Gnome 3 so it should be able to support Gnome
alerts.)

Use Ubuntu 15.10 and PPAs from Gnome3-team and Gnome3-team staging.  All this
works even on ancient PCs.  Have a backup PC that is an eight-year old hp/Compaq

The whole point of LTS versions (as Ubuntu calls them) is that the
versions of the software are stable over the whole lifetime of the OS.
If you want to keep the stability of the LTS version, then don't
upgrade a package to a non repository version. If you don't care about
that stability, then why bother with LTS.

3.10 should be popping up alerts - check the Gnome notification centre
that Evolution alerts are enabled.

I don't really care for LTS, it's just that Mint happens to be built on
top of Ubuntu 14.04, and I prefer it over normal Ubuntu. I tried
downloading the tarball from the official website, which said building
instructions would be in an INSTALL file, and then not providing the
file in the tarball. Any help setting up 3.18 would be appreciated.

I very much doubt you will be able to compile Evolution 3.18 on a
system that is based on Gnome 3.10 - at the very least you will need
Gnome 3.16.

In any case, I'm not an Ubuntu person, so I can't help much with that
environment.  Look in the list archives though since I seem to remember
a number of threads about getting recent versions of Evolution onto
Ubuntu and possibly some about how to compile it (it's not really
trivial).

Hi,
would it make it better to have all those "static" options at the top
and the list of labels at the very bottom of the combo box? I think
it's not a big deal for the users, especially when it'll make things
easier for them, once they "learn" the changed order. The labels might
be as in a sub-level as well, to not have too long initial drop down.
Neither of these would always help with the scrolling option, the
decision whether to scroll or not is made by the gtk+ itself, it's
completely out of the evolution hands.

A feature request in the GNOME bugzilla against evolution will help to
not forget of this.

Hi,
I do not know whether you already managed to figure out what is wrong,
but just in case, do not override EVOLUTION_DATA_SERVER_LIBS before the
./configure call, rather override LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable, like this:
   $ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
   $ export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/local/share/pkgconfig
   $ ./configure --disable-autoar

Hope it helps.

Hi,
Evolution uses the duration based on the selection in the view. As you
probably use the Day View, or the Work Week view, then first select the
right time, from and to, then double-click the selection and it'll open
the new event editor with that selected time prefilled. You can select
the times by dragging an empty space there.

Hi,
you can run evolution as:

   $ CAMEL_DEBUG=junk evolution

to see what the junk filtering does, whether it's run at all and so on.

Evolution usually doesn't mark messages as junk on its own, thus it
might be related to the actual spam filtering software being installed
and chosen in the evolution, as suggested earlier.

Hi,
it's kind of the way it works. The To field is filled from the source
message (the one you used the template on), it's either the Reply-To or
the From header.

The Cc/Bcc headers are copied verbatim from the template, thus you can
write there some people you always want to have in Cc/Bcc when using
such template. There is done no replacement in these headers.
Furthermore, when I check the saved template it has the $ORIG[xx] in
the To/Cc headers gone anyway. I suppose it's due to the fact that
those values are not real email addresses.

You can always file an enhancement request for a different way of
dealing with the To/Cc/Bcc headers for the template plugin in the
evolution, but I'm currently not sure how to work with that address
striping (removal of $ORIG[xx] from the To/Cc headers on the message
save).

Hi,
the Evolution has a similar plugin too, its configuration is a little
bit hidden, though. Go to Edit->Plugins->Mail Notification->
Configuration tab and select there what it should do when new mail
arrives. It is supposed to be enabled for your Inbox folders by
default.

[Evolution] Problems after upgrade to 3.18

2016-01-11 Thread Oliver Elphick
Upgraded from 3.10 to 3.18.3 using a self-built evolution under Linux
Mint.

1. On starting evolution, I had various messages from different
elements saying "the name 1.479 was not provided by any service files".

2. Contacts on two gmail accounts show nothing, although there are
contacts there, but the calendar on those accounts is partly working.

3. Calendar events already defined on the Gmail accounts can be read,
but on trying to create a new event I get "Cannot create calendar
object: Authentication Required"

4. On starting to write this email, I got the message:
"Failed to connect address book 'o...@lfix.co.uk : Contacts'
The requested resource was not found: https://developers.google.com/acc
ounts/docs/AuthForInstalledApps".

Should I wipe the evolution configuration and start again?  If so, how
can I do that without losing local addressbook data and mails?

Thanks
