Well I sort of meant your whole home directory, including all the .*
files and directories.

> That would be just everything in ~/.local/share/evolution? Sorry,

Evo uses more than .local/share/evolution - although I can't recall the
exact ones for 2.28. That's why I said to backup everything.

The backup file created within Evo tars up all the requisite files plus
information on the configuration - then the restore process just untars
the file and leaves Evo to upgrade what's necessary when it restarts.
So you can do all this with just the Evo backup file, but it's safer if
you have another copy of the files elsewhere.

The file structure where Evo keeps all the data and account info changes
over time to take account of efficiency and improvements. When a new
version of Evo runs and it detects an old style file structure, the
first thing it does is to upgrade all the files and directories to the
new format(s). It is that upgrade process I'm talking about, not the
upgrade of the Evolution application.

If you do a large jump in versions, the upgrade process must go through
multiple procedures to get the data files to the most recent formats.
Some of those conversions are more monumental than others. There is
more scope for things to go wrong if you are doing 5 upgrade procedures
rather just one.

Here's one I posted from Aug 2013

===

Whatever the case, get your old mail into a temporary directory (copy
from the backup or untar the backup file), find the exact unix directory
that your files are in - if they are from your F16 system, I think that
already used maildir format, so they will be in
/.local/share/evolution/mail/local (where is the directory
you untarred the backup into - DON'T do it in your home folder).

Now within Evolution, create a new account - the email address you enter
doesn't matter, you won't be using it - and for "Server Type" select
"Maildir format mail directories" and point it at the directory you
located above (i.e. /.local/share/evolution/mail/local),

There will now be a new account in the left hand side bar containing all
the backed up mail. Copy that mail to the required location in
Evolution - either under "On This Computer" or a remote folder. Once
you have copied everything you want, then delete the account in
Evolution and delete the files from the temporary directory. Please
don't be tempted to just leave the temporary account in place and keep
using it - it won't be backed up by Evolution and it is better to let
Evo look after its data in its own private folders.

Because IMAP mail is held on a server somewhere so you don't have to
worry about migrating the data to a new version.

It's vulnerable certainly - but it's only critically exploitable if you
run externally facing services that call a shell. But yes, you should
run a version that isn't vulnerable.

Re: [Evolution] Your message was sent, but an error occurred during post-processing.

2014-10-04 Thread Mark Elkins
I occasionally get this too. I use Evolution with IMAP on various
devices (Desktop,Laptop). I like having all my sent messages "stored"
via IMAP... so regardless of device, I can see what I have sent.

The problem seems to happen when there is a poor network connection - so
Evolution instead stores the outbound message locally. Coincidently, my
outbound Submission is on the same server that hosts IMAP... (possible
workaround?)

It would be cool if when this happens, the message could be later
synchronised into my INBOX/Sent folder when comms are better.

I do understand that but since I haven't been using it, it would be of
no help now in migrating my existing data, most of which resides only on
my machine. Unless I'm missing something?

The OP asked how it would help now. The used account/s is/are POP, so
the answer seems to be, that it doesn't help right now, but it would
help to avoid issues in the future. JFTR I'm using POP, because I
experienced more issues when using IMAP.

You're missing that you might need to do such an update in the future
too. It doesn't help you right now, but _might_ prevent from the same
issue in the future. I prefer POP, but indeed most people claim to have
less issues when using IMAP.

Create an IMAP account now. Copy all your current mail to the IMAP
account now. Now don't worry about moving your data.

As I just said, it could help *right now* by copying all the mail to the

I have it set as .Sent in Maildir folder, the screenshot below shows
this. Permissions for the .Sent folder are

drwx-- 6 chris chris 4096 Oct 3 08:29 .Sent

Sometimes it saves to the correct sent folder but more often than not it
doesn't.

[Evolution] Some HTML messages cause evolution to take all resources

2014-10-04 Thread John Lauterbach
RE: Evolution 3.10.4 running under Ubuntu 14.04 on DELL Vostro 3500 with
8 GM RAM

Increasingly, evolution is taking over my PC when it encounters messages
written in HTML These are business-related messages that cannot be
ignored. This morning, I have had message take all available RAM and
all of a 6.6 GB swap file. This causes PC to lock up or become useless
for minutes at a time while evolution does its thing. These are not
"new" types of messages, but one similar to those I was receiving a few
weeks ago.

I hope someone can explain what is happening.

Thank you,

I'm not entirely clear about something here - your screen shot shows
that the sent folder is "ChrisP/INBOX/Sent" - so presumably the
Evolution account "ChrisP" is a Maildir folder on your own computer? If
so, then surely the folder name should be ".INBOX.Sent"? Or if the
"INBOX" mail folder is really the "Inbox" (other than just being called
that!), then it would be "..Sent". The .Sent directory refers to the
Maildir folder "ChrisP/Sent".

I guess you could call this a 'local' IMAP setup since the the folders are not
on a remote
server but here on the desktop. I've been using the type of setup for
years and until my Mandriva box died back in July never had any issues
of this type with Evolution.

Correct, all mail goes to a Maildir folder with their own '.' name. This
is exactly the same way Evo was setup on my old Mandriva box before it
died including the settings that were in the screenshot. All that should
be doing is telling Evo that 'Sent' is a separate folder in the Maildir
folder. Maybe I should have mentioned, if I didn't, that I have this
setup as a local IMAP account using CourierIMAP so in the Maildir folder
I have cur, new, tmp for the INBOX and the rest of the folders are in
'.' format. that have their own cur, new, tmp folders. But, you probably
know this. And again, this problem doesn't happen every time but it's
intermittent. For instance I just replied to another post on this list
and it saved to the correct 'Sent' folder. I guess the real question is
what does this mean:

Error appending message: Stream has outstanding operation

Why not just have it as a local Maildir account rather than getting
Courier involved in it?

Anyway, presumably the setup of having all the mail folders appearing to
hang off INBOX is a Courier config thing and is just presentational
rather than reflecting the structure of the folders on the disk.

It's a Glib error - from the source code:

==
  if (stream->priv->pending)
{
  g_set_error (error, G_IO_ERROR, G_IO_ERROR_PENDING,
/* Translators: This is an error you get if there is
   * already an operation running against this stream when
   * you try to start one */
  _("Stream has outstanding operation"));
  return FALSE;
}
=

Can you see from the logs if the error is generated by Evo or is it
passed back to Evo by Courier? It strikes me that some thread may be
having problems writing - the problem is finding what: is it Courier
writing to the disk or Evo writing to IMAP.

You can download from an IMAP server and delete them there too and even
store IMAP in your home, but that's where the issues with IMAP started
for me, by getting duplicated emails. I'm using POP, but I never
upgraded by such huge steps as 2.28.3 to 3.10.4. Nowadays I'm using a

I can't find any logs for courier or the imap daemon anywhere. The issue
is still intermittent. Of 5 test posts to myself 2 saved to the right
sent folder the other 3 showed the error. Stopping the imap daemon of
course kills the connection.

There also exists a program called grepmail,
http://grepmail.sourceforge.net/, to scan emails.

While the issue of IMAP v. POP has been widely commented, I have not seen
comments in the thread about the Linux Mint update procedure outlined here:

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2

The process involves making an backup of the home directory (for which Mint
provides a tool), which would include the Evo data. I would follow the Evo
backup procedure to try to restore later. However, the Mint update procedure
should be sufficient to assure that there is a separate copy of all data.

In response to a prior suggestion, I recently had to move selected messages
from one Evo installation to another and used the procedure described earlier
for creating a file and treating it as a separate account and then moving the
messages to "my" account. The approach works perfectly and is something I first
learned after trying Kmail . . . and discovering after the fact that it had no
export function!
