[Evolution] Evo and mail notification in KDE taskbar

2009-11-26 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hello,

This is with Evo 2.24.5 (I know that there are newer versions :-)) and
with KDE 3.5.10.

When new (unread) mail is in Inbox, Evo is showing the correct number in
Evo's entry in the taskbar, see in the centre of the screen shoot:

http://www.unixarea.de/notify1.png

where it reads "Inbox (2 unread, 25 total)"; sometimes it shows also a
golden letter, see the far right of:

http://www.unixarea.de/notify2.png

Why this golden letter only comes up sometimes and not always when new
mail arrives?

Thx

matthias

The notification area icon appears when new mail arrives and Evo doesn't
have focus - as soon as you "acknowledge" the arrival of new mail by
giving focus to Evo, the icon goes away. So it's a "new" mail icon
rather than an "unread" mail icon. It doesn't appear if Evo has focus
when the mail arrives.

Hi,
I do not have access to an Outlook machine, but isn't there any other
format to export your contacts from the Outlook? Evolution can import
vCard files very easily, and I think that Outlook is also able to export
your contacts in that format, but as I do not have access to the
machine, I cannot tell for sure. (I'm just thinking aloud).

Hi,
actually, the icon goes away as soon as you "read" a mail (any mail, not
only the new one). It's how it is working with 2.28. You can configure
behavior of the notifications in a way of "notify me for new messages in
Inbox only", thus receiving new messages in other than Inbox folders
will not show the notification.

This setup can be found in Edit->Plugins->Mail Notification->tab
"Configuration" or by right-clicking the notification icon in 2.28.x,
but it's different in 2.24 for sure. There definitely isn't that
right-clicking, and the option is probably buried somewhere under
Edit->Preferences->Mail Preferences, on some tab.

It's possible that the above is not a case for you. Do you use Exchange?
There was a bug report about not showing mail notifications for newly
received messages on Exchange. I do not have much idea what happened
with that bug report. I only noticed it quite long time ago.

I don't think that the fact that the icon does not appear, does not
depend on having Evo the focus; most of the time Evo sits in another of
my 4 desktops and I'm working on other stuff, i.e. Evo does not have the
focus, and the icon is not showing up;

In my 2.24 there is also Edit->Plugins->Mail Notification->tab Configuration
see screen http://www.unixarea.de/notify3.png
there is no right-click-action on the tab;

I have to use Exchange; do you know where to locate the bug report?

I posted a very similar scenario about a week ago; my new mail notice
doesn't even disappear with I mark the new mail as read. I must navigate
to the actual new msg and click on it for the icon to go away.

Hi,
so you have "for Inbox only" checked, thus if it receives new mail to
other than Inbox folder, then it silently ignores it, as you told it to
do so (or the default is set as such).

It's really a long time ago, I would bet for http:// bugzilla.gnome.org

Hi Bryan,

I had some luck with a combination of O2M ( a US$10 commercial bit of
software ) and Outport, for moving my mail data from Outlook to
Evolution at the end of 2008.

Steps I followed are here:
http://nickj.org/How_to_migrate_from_Outlook_2000_to_Evolution#Importing_your_Contacts_into_Evolution

It wasn't perfect for contacts (e.g. from memory, some of the phone
fields might have changed types? E.g. "business" might have become
"primary" or vice-versa?). However it was workable, at least with my
much smaller data set than yours!

There's also a new PST importer plugin for Evolution, although I haven't
personally tested it, so I don't know how it performs.

> because of the issues I mentioned in the first email.

I'd suggest logging a bug in bugzilla for any data import issues
encountered if they are at the Evolution end. That way they are properly
recorded and can be tested, worked on, resolved on, in a systematic
manner. You're not the first person to want to migrate across, and I'm
certain you won't be the last, so recording any issues to help make the
process as painless as possible, and to ensure that there's equivalent
functionality for needed features, is a good idea.
