FYI, the latest Evo RPMs on Fedora 6 (stable) are for 2.8.3. If you go for the development version (essentially a beta of Fedora 7) you have to update a large number of Gnome packages, which in turn triggers updates to stuff that has nothing to do with Evo. Personally, I just recompile from the tarballs (it's not hard if you follow the README) and run Evo 2.10 quite happily on my Fedora 6 KDE desktop. I don't use Garnome or jbuild precisely because they enthusiastically recompile over 30 other packages which I don't care about. However I do appreciate the point you raise about supporting a large set of users; I certainly wouldn't want to do this in that case. poc ___ Evolution-list mailing list Evolution-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list

No. RHEL 5 is branched from the initial release of Fedora Core 6, and as such provides GNOME 2.16.0, which includes Evolution 2.8.0. But we support those versions for the lifetime of the RHEL release. I, for example, am still supporting Evolution 2.0.2 in RHEL 4. Exceptions to the rule have been made, however, and there is some talk of whether it would make sense to upgrade the major desktop applications (Firefox, OpenOffice, and Evolution) at some point before RHEL 6. I'm in favor of that; it would make my job easier. But nothing official has been decided. > FYI, the latest Evo RPMs on Fedora 6 (stable) are for 2.8.3. Given that RHEL 5 uses yum now, upgrading Evolution at your own risk might be as easy as pointing it to a Fedora repository. But Patrick is right about the dependencies and obviously we don't support that. [Evolution] Evolution and attachment names
Hello there, I am using Evolution 2.8.1 on Ubuntu (Edgy Eft) to connect to an Exchange Server, and I've noticed that whenever you attach a file whose name contains accented characters, the Outlook users receive the attachment as att.dat (for instance, at243765.dat), and therefore they are not able to open it directly within Outlook. The only way to access the information is to save and rename the file (if you know what kind of file it is). I doesn't happen in the opposite direction (Outlook -> Evolution). Evolution is able to display the accented characters normally. Has anybody gone through this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Marcus ___ Evolution-list mailing list Evolution-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list

I guess then, from my perspective (being a reseller/integrator trying to develop linux desktop offerings for customers) I would certainly vote to enable upgrade of "the major desktop applications" within versions. SUSE supports SLED for 5 years. That is a whale of a long time to expect staying at the same version for all of these apps. In fact, it almost seems ridiculous to even contemplate it. I can understand that only a few apps could be consistently upgraded over the life of the distro ... otherwise there would never be a new distro version, just updating the existing one. But at the same time, if customers have elected the stabilitiy of a distro supported for 5 years, that does not mean that they would willingly choose a commitment to outdated desktop applications. Anyway, thanx for clarifying ... it does appear as though this *could* be possible (ie upgrading SLED evo to newest version) but it is not trivial ... I do wish evo was a little less dependant on gnome parts ... Peter ___ Evolution-list mailing list Evolution-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list

Newer versions of RHEL and (I believe) SLED are released long before the support period for the previous version expires. The period between RHEL releases is about two years, even though we support a particular release (to varying degrees) for seven. This give enterprises the option to upgrade when *they're* ready. We still provide bug fixes for RHEL 4 and security updates (and, it turns out, DST updates) for RHEL 3. I assume SUSE uses a similar model for SLED.
