Public bug reported:

When starting Calibre from the sidebar by clicking on it, the splash
screen is shown (a picture of a shelf of books) and the text loading
user interface is displayed. After this, the user interface is
corrupted. Not only for Calibre, but for other parts of the system as
well. For instance the comments when hovering over the icons of the
sidebar are displayed permanently, even when moving to hover over
another sidebar icon. When right-clicking the Calibre icon on the
sidebar and selecting Exit, the user interface seems to function normal
again

I tried the following, inspired by one of the comments in another bug
report. In a terminal I ran the following commands:

sudo rm -fr /opt/calibre
sudo rm -fr ~/.config/calibre

After that I manually removed calibre from the desktop starter bar.

After that I did an install from the Calibre website https://calibre-
ebook.com/download_linux and ran the command headlined "binary install"
in a terminal:

sudo -v && wget -nv -O-
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/master/setup/linux-
installer.py | sudo python -c "import sys;
main=lambda:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n');
exec(sys.stdin.read()); main()"

After that all seems fine now..
