Ecolog-L Graduate Assistantship (M.S.), Rattlesnake Ecology

2025-03-19 Thread Waldron, Jayme
The Herpetology and Applied Conservation Lab in the Department of Biological
Sciences at Marshall University (Huntington, WV) is seeking a highly motivated
graduate student (M.S.) to conduct research on Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes
(EDB) at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. Applicants must
have prior field experience and an interest in rattlesnake ecology. Applicants
must be committed to following strict safety protocols and tolerant of
uncomfortable field conditions (hot, high humidity, biting insects). Applicants
must demonstrate maturity and have a history of working well with others (peers
and technicians).

Initiated in 2008, the EDB monitoring program uses individual-level data (radio
telemetry, camera traps, and mark-recapture) in an adaptive management
framework to maintain congruence among military training activities and natural
resource management, ensuring military readiness is not compromised by access
to training areas. With guidance from senior lab personnel, graduate students
in the Herpetology and Applied Conservation Lab are encouraged to develop and
implement M.S. thesis projects that match their research interests while
complementing the EDB monitoring program.

The funded position requires a 2.5-3 year commitment, with the successful
applicant starting field work in summer 2025. The student will work under the
mentorship of Dr. Jayme Waldron and will spend ~8 months per year in the field
(including summer and 1 semester/year). While on campus (1 semester/year;
Huntington, WV), the student will be expected to teach biology labs in the
Department of Biological Sciences as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. The student
will be expected to manage and train field technicians, as needed.

Salary and compensation: ~$18,000/year plus a tuition waiver (excluding fees).
Because the position requires use of personal vehicle, we will compensate for
mileage accrued at the study site @ $0.55/mile. Field housing will be provided.

Send application materials in one pdf file that includes unofficial
transcripts, resume (including contact information for three references), and a
1-page state of interest to Emily Gray (Lab Manager) at
emily.g...@marshall.edu. We will begin
reviewing applications immediately and the position will remain open until
filled.

Wetland Recontamination Literature
Review
Dear Colleagues,

The New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program is thrilled to announce a new
funding opportunity for a literature review on wetland recontamination in the
Hudson Raritan Estuary.

Habitat loss is the most significant driver of threatened species extinction
globally, and wetland restoration is needed to meet federal and local habitat
goals. HEP is seeking proposals to evaluate how the recontamination of restored
urban wetlands impacts wildlife, weighing these risks against the benefits of
urban restoration and the risks of inaction, such as habitat loss.

This opportunity will support one project for up to $25,000.

Interested researchers should submit a letter of intent through
ProposalCentral,
our grants portal, by 5:00 PM Eastern Time, April 11, 2025.

Click
here
for more details about the RFP and instructions for how to submit your letter
of intent.

Ecolog-L ONLINE COURSE: Plant Identification for Wildlife Biologists 🌿🌺

2025-03-19 Thread CWS Admin
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Plants structure ecosystems and provide habitat and food for wildlife. As
such, identifying and classifying plants are essential skills for wildlife
biologists but are often underemphasized in wildlife curriculums or
overlooked altogether. This course gives students a foundation in the
practical skills needed to identify and classify plants in their location
of interest (e.g., study area, forest, park, management unit). Students
will learn how to define characteristics of plants, classify plants into
major plant groups and common plant families, and use technical keys to
identify plant species from their local areas. By the end, students will
produce a digital plant collection for their location of interest. Credit
from successful completion of this course can be used to earn professional
certifications (e.g., The Wildlife Society’s Certified Wildlife
Biologist®), and if taken for academic credit, can meet the minimum
educational requirements for federal and state wildlife biology jobs that
require formal education in botany and the related plant sciences.

Ecolog-L Marine Parasitology Course offered at Shoals Marine Lab: June 2-16, 2025

2025-03-19 Thread via ecolog-l list
Please pass along to any interested undergraduate students!

Come to a beautiful island to learn all about the amazing world of marine
parasites. In June 2025, Marine Parasitology & Disease is being offered again
at the Shoals Marine Lab, located on Appledore Island, Maine:
https://www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org/marine-parasitology-disease

This course explore marine parasites and pathogens at multiple levels,
including: (1) the evolutionary perspective with an emphasis on co-evolutionary
relationships; (2) parasitic diseases and life cycles (from simple to complex);
(3) taxonomic and phylogenetic understanding of parasite and host groups (with
a focus on metazoan parasites and hosts); (4) ecological implications of
parasitism in marine systems-at the population, community, and ecosystem
levels; and (5) the effects of human-induced global change on parasitism in
marine communities.

Students in the course also get to take part in a short, hands-on research
project, learning valuable study design skills in the process. The rocky
intertidal is just minutes from instructional facilities and dorms, allowing
students to take part in multiple field activities, as well as working in the
lab. We also often visit multiple islands in the Isles of Shoals Archipelago,
learning about how parasite life cycles are influenced by free-living (host)
diversity and human activities.
