Ecolog-L Hiring: Aquatic Monitoring Crew Lead, fieldwork in CA

2025-03-05 Thread Andrew Christensen
OVERVIEW

The Institute for Natural Resources (Portland, OR;
https://www.pdx.edu/inr/institute-natural-resources) is partnering with the
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to implement the Aquatic Assessment,
Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) program, which collects standardized data
from streams across BLM lands in the western U.S. Crews will be based
in Portland,
OR, with work sites in Oregon, Washington, and California. Work will follow
the AIM National Aquatic Monitoring Framework: Field Protocol for Wadeable
Lotic Systems (TR 1735-2).

We are recruiting multiple Crew Leads to supervise two- to three-person
crews. The season begins with mandatory paid training from June 8 – 15, 2025,
followed by fieldwork through early October. Crew Leads are
responsible for hitch
planning, data collection, gear management, and coordinating with BLM staff
and INR supervisors. Fieldwork follows an eight-day (Wed–Wed) hitch
schedule, with 10-hour days, followed by six days off.

This is a field-based position requiring extended camping in remote areas
with minimal amenities. Crews will work in extreme heat, sun exposure,
wildfire smoke, and rugged terrain, often traveling long distances on 4x4
roads. The work is physically demanding, requiring crew members to carry 40–50
lb packs and wade through streams. INR provides vehicles, sampling gear,
waterproof boots, and shared field equipment, while crew members must
supply personal camping gear. Housing between hitches is the responsibility
of crew members.

This position offers hands-on leadership experience in field operations,
hydrology, and ecological monitoring while applying a standardized protocol
used across the Western U.S. Crew Leads will gain valuable experience
managing field logistics, troubleshooting challenges in remote settings,
and working with BLM and INR teams to support conservation efforts.

CREW LEAD POSITIONS REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING:

   -

A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Aquatic Ecology, Fisheries, Hydrology,
Water Resources, or a related subject.
   -

A minimum of one full year or two full seasons of fish,
macroinvertebrate, hydrology, or water quality field data collection.

   -

Experience following established field protocols to conduct sampling and
field data collection on new and existing monitoring sites.
   -

Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Access)
   -

Experience navigating and collecting coordinates with hand-held GPS
units and other electronic devices such as Survey123.
   -

Experience driving and maintaining 4WD trucks, especially in off-road
situations. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Experience
   driving UTV/side-by-side vehicles is preferred.
   -

Demonstrated ability to work productively as part of a team to
accomplish mutual goals, and to work independently as required.
   -

Experience in and willingness to spend multiple days camping in the
field where hazards (snakes, bears, deadfall, lightning, poison oak, flash
floods, fires, etc.) may be encountered.
   -

Willingness to work irregular hours in harsh environments and
challenging weather, and carry 40-50 pounds in a backpack over uneven
   terrain.
   -

   CPR and First Aid Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

   -

Experience characterizing aquatic habitats in the field using
standardized protocols, including establishing transects and thalweg
profiles, identifying bankfull width, stream classification (Rosgen or

Ecolog-L M.S. Assistantship - Interior Douglas-fir Drought Resistance Genetic Variability

2025-03-05 Thread asnelson at uidaho.edu (via ecolog-l list)
A Masters of Science assistantship is available at the University of Idaho to
study genetic variability in drought resistance of interior Douglas-fir in
northern Idaho. The student will join the Center for Forest Nursery and
Seedling Research (CFNSR) and will be supervised by Dr. Andrew Nelson. The
assistantship includes a competitive stipend, waiver of out-of-state tuition,
full coverage of in-state tuition and student health insurance. Additional
funds are available for research supplies and travel. Funding is available for
2 years as a research assistantship.

The student will work on a project examining genetic variability of interior
Douglas-fir as part of a second-generation Douglas-fir tree improvement
program. Seedlings are being grown from various controlled crosses of different
ramets selected for superior growth and form in a tree orchard at the Franklin
H. Pitkin Forest Nursery. Most of the seedlings are destined for progeny test
sites, but additional seedlings will be available to evaluate genetic
variability of various drought resistance and drought avoidance traits.
Additional measurements will include evaluation of cold tolerance and growth
potential. Parent ramets are available at the nearby tree seed orchard to
measure drought and cold traits. The student will conduct a controlled drought
experiment in a greenhouse and potentially collect additional data at progeny
test sites located in North-Central Idaho. Results from the research will
contribute to ongoing tree improvement efforts in the Inland Northwest and lead
to new understanding of potential trade-offs in growth and stress tolerance as
variability in drought and other abiotic factors continue across the region.

The student will frequently interact with scientists, forest managers, and tree
improvement professionals at scientific conferences, regional outreach events,
and conversations with collaborators. The student is expected to publish their
results in peer-reviewed journals. The student will have access to
laboratories, field sites, and greenhouses at the University of Idaho and
across North-Central Idaho. The labs are fully outfitted with equipment to
measure plant physiology and morphology.

Required qualifications include a B.S. degree in forestry, plant ecophysiology,
botany, or closely related discipline and an interest in working in forestry or
tree improvement in the future. The successful candidate will demonstrate an
ability to work both independently and as a team member, and be comfortable
traveling and working in the greenhouse, lab, and field. The student must be
able to pass a criminal background.

The student is expected to begin August 2025. The position is based in Moscow,
Idaho, home to the University of Idaho. Moscow is in northern Idaho on the
border with Washington in a region known as the Palouse. The area offers ample
outdoor recreational opportunities within a short distance from Moscow.

Interested applicants should first complete an online application form
(form). Once the form is complete, send a
brief email introducing yourself and your interest in the position along with a
curriculum vitae, contact information for three professional or academic
references, and unofficial transcripts to Dr. Andrew Nelson
(asnel...@uidaho.edu). Review of applications will
begin immediately until a suitable candidate is found.

Best regards,
Andrew
