[Dx-packages] [Bug 1307657] Re: UBUNTU_MENUPROXY should not be set in Xfce

2014-04-14 Thread Ted Gould
I think for a quick fix we could just put a pre-start script in that
checked to see if the desktop was Unity. Longer term it should check a
dconf key (and run if that key is changed with the upstart-dconf
bridge).

Title:
UBUNTU_MENUPROXY should not be set in Xfce

Status in “unity-gtk-module” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
To reproduce: either start with a fresh Ubuntu install and then
install xubuntu-desktop, or start with Xubuntu and then install
ubuntu-desktop - ie have both Xfce and Unity installed on the same
  machine.

Xfce now has support for gtk3 indicators launched by upstart, but
indicator-appmenu is totally broken - it will constantly crash the
panel and applications. Xfce has a mechanism to hide indicators, and
then the frontend UI will not be loaded in the panel, but it seems
that UBUNTU_MENUPROXY is still being set in Xfce, which causes menus
to disappear from applications, even though nothing is available to
  receive them.

I discussed this with tedg and he suggested that the problem may be to
do with the upstart service which sets UBUNTU_MENUPROXY, ie
  /usr/share/upstart/sessions/unity-gtk-module.conf

We may in future get the appmenus working in Xfce, and then we would
need some way to turn the menuproxy on and off depending on the user
configuration. But for now, since they are broken anyway, it would be
easiest to simply blacklist xubuntu desktop completely.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1323654] Re: error launching calendar/g+ from gmail webapp

2014-05-27 Thread Ted Gould
It seems that the URL database isn't getting updated properly, as there
are some insert failures in bfiller's update logs. After removing the
database and rerunning the update, there are no errors. I'm not able to
recreate those errors on a database. We're going to keep this open and
push through an MR to create recoverable errors on the insert failures
to see if we can get more data and see if the bug occurs in other
situations.

Bug description:
By design the indicator-sound is only storing/restoring the master
  volume, not handing sink-port specifics.

Meanwhile we have pulse also storing/restoring the per sink-port
values once the daemon is started, but it gets reset again once
indicator-sound is started with the system-wide value stored by the
  indicator.

This is a problem with ubuntu touch specifically, because of the following
use case scenario:
  - Set speaker volume to 90 % using the indicator
  - Connect wired headset, set volume to 10%
  - Disconnect wired headset, volume will change to 90% automatically (because
of pulse)
  - Reboot with the wired headset connected

After boot the volume will be 90% instead of 10%.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1340952] Re: media player doe not play videos indexed from outside ~/Videos

2014-07-15 Thread Ted Gould
The URL dispatcher current has two file:/// based URLs that are for
backwards compatibility with the URLs that came from the Unity 7 scopes.
Those two are for ${HOME}/Music and ${HOME}/Videos which are routed to
their appropriate players.

The long term solution is to kill those URLs for usage in the video and
music scopes as they don't really do what we want. Researching to see if
that's reasonable in the RTM timeframe.

of making the HUD unusable. I ran top while I was typing and I watched
dash start up multiple copies of 'locate' as I typed into the HUD.

Look at how much CPU time locate takes on my file system for a non
  existent string.

  jonsmirl@terra:/var/lib/mlocate$ time locate dkdkdkddk
  real 0m4.913s
  user 0m4.864s
  sys 0m0.032s

As I type three or four copies of 'locate' are getting spawned as the
letters are typed in or I hit back space. The effect of this is to
completely saturate my I7 CPU to the point of making the system
  unresponsive.

  1) don't start these incremental searches over the entire file system
until you have at least four letters to work with. The results from
less than four letters are useless because they will match too many
files. Limit the short string searches to only installed applications.

  2) don't let multiple 'locate' commands get started. If you want to
change the string make sure the prior locate is killed first.

  3) Get a project started for Ubuntu 13 where an incremental search
feature is added to the 'locate' command.

Title:
hud-service frequently tries to accesses non existing files causing
  high disk/network activity

Status in The Application Menu:
  Confirmed
Status in System Load Indicator:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-appmenu” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  /usr/lib/indicator-appmenu/hud-service is frequently calling access()
  for the following three files:

  access("/.cache/indicator-appmenu/hud-usage-log.sqlite-journal", F_OK)
= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
  access("/.cache/indicator-appmenu/hud-usage-log.sqlite-wal", F_OK) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)
  access("/usr/share/indicator-appmenu/hud/app-info/multiload.hud-app-info",
F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

which apparently do not exist (excerpt from strace log, is
  users home directory).

For NFS mounted homes this causes a constant network traffic of ~300kB/s down
and ~50kB/s up in idle state.
On slower machines this causes a more than noticable CPU load (with and
without NFS mounted homes).

They will run for a bit, but then exit without reporting any results.
Presumably hud is causing them to crash (worked fine before updating
hud). Happens at least to unity8-autopilot, webbrowser-app-autopilot,
ubuntu-keyboard-autopilot, and calendar-app-autopilot. Didnt bother to
test anything else after that (ran out of time).

When Evolution is not installed (as it isn't by default), the dates in
the clock menu's calendar do nothing, but highlight as if they are
  clickable.

  : The “Coming events
from” menu should default to “Evolution” if it is installed, otherwise
“Lightning” if it is installed, otherwise “Subscribed Calendars”.

  : "The dates shown
in the calendar should behave, and look, as normal grid-layout menu
items. Each date should be sensitive only if it is in the current
month and the calendar application selected (if any) in settings is
installed. Activating an item should open that date in the calendar

  - login time (less services to start)

  - the indicator-messages menu, it shouldn't list unused entries
(gwibber is added on logging atm since the service is started)

  - memory usage

   * A user tries to shut down their machine. They get confused because nothing
happens
     when they click shutdown.
   * If someone else is logged in, they will have to ask that person to "Switch
User" to
     log in and log out
   * If someone else is logged in and you don't know the password of the
account, you
     can't shut down

  [Test Case]

   * Have two login accounts
   * Log both people in, via power cog->lock screen->switch user
   * lock the screen on current account, via power cog->lock screen
   * get back to lightdm via switch user
   * log in to an already logged in account, and try to power off the machine

  [Regression Potential]

   * It wasn't possible to shutdown at all before
   * I can't see a case for a regression, since it never worked to begin with

  [Original Report]

Selecting shutdown from the greeter does nothing when multiple
  accounts are open.

This is because the lightdm user (which the greeter runs as) does not
have permission to shutdown while sessions are open. Inside a normal
session this would just return you to the login screen.

The solution is either for the indicator to say "not allowed" or to
run a PolicyKit frontend in the greeter than can get the required
  permissions to perform the shutdown.s

They will run for a bit, but then exit without reporting any results.
Presumably hud is causing them to crash (worked fine before updating
hud). Happens at least to unity8-autopilot, webbrowser-app-autopilot,
ubuntu-keyboard-autopilot, and calendar-app-autopilot. Didnt bother to
test anything else after that (ran out of time).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1416233] Re: Sound indicator notification shows each time the a sound starts or stops

2015-02-05 Thread Ted Gould
So we're going to land a branch that makes the a lot less annoying, but
there still are a couple of notifications we'd like to clean up. That's
because we're not filtering out the event changes at the core of the
roles. Once we fix the core, the notifications will in turn get cleaned
up. That core work is going to be tracked here:

Okay, to recreate. Start up the device. Send this from ADB shell:

gdbus call --session --dest com.ubuntu.Postal --object-path
/com/ubuntu/Postal/com_2eubuntu_2edeveloper_2ewebapps_2ewebapp_2dtwitter
--method com.ubuntu.Postal.Post com.ubuntu.developer.webapps.webapp-
twitter_webapp-twitter '"{\"message\": \"foobar\",
\"notification\":{\"card\": {\"summary\": \"yes\", \"body\": \"hello\",
\"popup\": true, \"persist\": true}}}"'

Then on the messaging menu select "Clear All". Notice the tweet is
removed from the list but the envelope remains signaling new messages.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1422745] Re: wrong notification progress reported if volume >100% enabled in pulseaudio

2015-02-23 Thread Ted Gould
This should be better with the newer version of indicator-sound, which
only shows notifications on user feedback. Unfortunately don't have a
vivid desktop to test for sure. Can you please update with the results
for 0219 ? Thanks.

Title:
wrong notification progress reported if volume >100% enabled in
  pulseaudio

Status in indicator-sound package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When using the option to use the volume above 100%, indicator-sounds
interferes with the percentage reported in notify-osd:
  - enable in pulseaudio capplet for allow volume being above 100%
  - press volume up or down medium keys
  - notice that the progress reported by notify-osd isn't the correct one
compared to the capplet. Also, there is a glitch (like notification progress
bar going back and force)

-> stop indicator-sound, the progress reported is correct, and the glitch is
gone as well.
So, there are 2 updates occuring in a short period of time:
  - the one from unity-settings-daemon
  - the one from the indicator-sound, which doesn't send the correct value.

Another consequence is if you are using the indicator and slide the volume
bar, you have the notification showing on top, making it hard to see what
volume you are setting it. Moving the slider is already a visual user
confirmation, you shouldn't get a notification on top.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1416810] Re: indicator-messages should depent (or recommend) libmessaging-menu0

2015-02-23 Thread Ted Gould
Well, it does work meaning it'll sit there and show that there are no
messages. But if libmessaging-menu0 is installed, but no applications
use it, it'll sit there and show there are no messages. So depending on
libmessaging-menu0 is pointless as the real issue is that it needs
applications using it. Those applications should depend on libmessaging-
menu0 if they so desire. They could use DBus directly if they wanted.

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  - Open indicator-sound (click on volume icon)
  - Press the mouse in volume slide (don't release)
  - Move mouse to outside the slide widget (not on another button, or outside
indicator-sound)
  - Release the mouse
  - Optional: click on the indicator-sound window where there is no button.
Nothing happens, but you can click as much as you want. (Even if there is a
button, the behavior is the same)
  - Move mouse back to volume slide

Expected behavior: volume slider doesn't change with mouse motion

Observed behavior: volume slider follows mouse motion as if mouse is
  still pressed

  ---

I am reporting this bug here because particularly with indicator-
sound, the volume slider is quite thin, so if you are not precise, you
could release the mouse easily outside the area. What's more,
sometimes you want to lower the volume because some music you don't
want starts playing, so this could happen:

  - Lower the volume with a focus on changing the music
  - Moving fast, the mouse button release happens outside the slider area
  - Change the music
  - Move back to the slider with the intention of raising volume
  - BAM, the slider still thinks the mouse is pressed, and the volume may
potentially be raised to maximum depending on where your mouse is.

  ---

If I may suggest (based on guessing completely), the slider widget
needs to check the state of the mouse button on mouse motion event.

Bug description:
  Hello,

This bug is maybe not due to Indicator-Sound but since this indicator has
been ported to a "service" (since we have to load
/usr/share/unity/indicators/com.canonical.indicator.sound), its menu looks
different when using it with Cairo-Dock or with indicator-loader.
As you can see on the screenshot (indicator-sound_loader-vs-cairo-dock.png),
players menu entries reserve more spaces with Cairo-Dock.

Note: ido_init() has been called once and these new indicators are loaded
with "desktop" profile.
  More info:
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cairo-dock-team/cairo-dock-plug-ins/plug-ins/view/head:/Indicator-applet3/indicator-applet3.c#L29
The code is not so big and not so different than indicator-loader:
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~indicator-applet-developers/libindicator/trunk.13.10/view/head:/tools/indicator-loader.c
The dock just loads the applet and popup the menu (IndicatorObjectEntry->menu)

Any idea of what is wrong? :)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1421943] Re: sometimes it is not shown after boot

2015-03-03 Thread Ted Gould
It seems to be different than the datetime one. We only need the most
recent one (probably not .gz) after it happens again. Also, it'd be
useful if we could get the output to:

initctl status indicator-sound

To see if there is any info Upstart has.
Thanks!

  What I expected to happen:
Normally, the sound-indicator should show you a speaker with the name sound
and there are tools (mute, loudness) under it.

  What happen instead:
But sometimes, it shows only a gear and it is named "indicator-sound" and
there are no tools like mute-switch and loudness-control.

(I didn't see it in the last 4 releases, but I didn't restart it
often, so the possibility, to get the bug was not high enough. But as
far as I remember, it was in < r60, too.)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1378350] Re: [Browser] Need to allow multiple apps to handle the same url patterns

2015-03-05 Thread Ted Gould
I'm going to reopen the design task here because that doesn't take into
account "always use this app" which is important for URLs, but not as
much for content. We'll also need settings UI to handle the cases of
reshuffling which URL patterns should be preferred if the user does
select "always use." I think though, that we could do a version one
without that feature.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1387691] Re: Media Player should not be visible in the app scope and launcher

2015-03-23 Thread Ted Gould
The problem with the "OnlyShowIn" approach is that it is going to create
a really odd user experience. Should the app show up in the Launcher?
What about the application spread? What if someone pins it on the
launcher? Providing something that is both an application in some states
but not others is only a route to confusing the user.

Along with that, it's really not where we want to go long term. We want
to move towards more helpers and less applications for this type of
functionality. It breaks the architecture that we're trying to build. I
think that CI Train has taught us how long "temporary fixes" can burn us
:-)

Perhaps there is a middle ground on trusted session splash screens where
it could be at least a black screen so the user can tell *something* is
happening.
