Summary: Unable to boot with the radeon driver
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: blocking
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI - non Intel)
AssignedTo: drivers_video-...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: v10la...@myway.de
Regression: No

I use an radeon HD 4670 graphic card and can't boot with the 3.3-rc3 kernel,
while it works fine with 3.2 (3.3-rc1 and 2 not tested).
The system just hangs and shows me the attached screen. MagicSysRQ not working.

[Bug 45018] [bisected] rendering regression since added support for virtual address space on cayman v11

I've been able to get a log in dmesg when the GPU locked. Just after
relaunching X and Gnome-Shell, I was able to reproduce a lock/crash I'm
experiencing from
time to time without any log to post. So I took a picture of it. I'm attaching
all that just now.

I experience a very similar lockup problem. It always happens when rotating the
desktop cube (compiz).

It seems the rest of the system still works (playing music via mpd etc.), but I
can't switch VT. However, I took a picture of the output (see attached jpg).

To put your results in context, my 855gm achieves 470fps and 55fps fullscreen
(1024x768). So I judge yours to be in line with what to expect from the
hardware,
if a little subpar.

The secret with these gen2 devices is not to use GL at all! For instance, with
video use the video overlay (by using Xv). And compiz is just going to be a
waste of time and energy.

This is the only credible approach for most desktop chips -- you must
have the whole configuration available before you can make any
commitment to supporting the requested modes.

The current plan for the i915 KMS code is to use a single ioctl -- the
application sends a buffer full of configuration commands down to the
kernel which can then figure out whether it can be supported or not.

The kernel will have to store the intermediate data until the commit
arrives anyways, and you still need a central authority in the kernel
controlling the final commit decision.
