[DNG] Screen flickering
Recently the screen of a Dell Latitude 7400 laptop I have (which is running Devuan) started flickering. I tried to deactivate/reactivate it (got a second monitor), unplug it to let it run w/o charger, change the display's frequency... you name it. I also tried to reboot on the previous 4.19.0-14 kernel, to no avail. Could it be due to some update or it necessarily hardware fault-related? What caught my eye is that the 1st time I tried rebooting it was doing that on the GRUB screen. Since then, not anymore then. Are there modules to look for/disable? What else is there to try? Re: [DNG] Screen flickering
Something I guess is important that I forgot to add: The flicker started happening after the screen went black during a session lock phase (screensaver was running on the other screen). I had to reboot to make the laptop's screen come back, only to have it flicker. I would boot from an installation USB / CD (preferably the one you set the machine up from) and go into Rescue Mode, and see whether the hardware still continues behaving the same way. That means you're testing it with the versions of kernel / modules / boot loader / etc as you did when you set it up, without any updates. When connected to an external monitor, does that monitor show the flickering, too? That is my case already: I am using the internal display + an extra one. No sign of trouble on the external one. I just did that on the latest Devuan Beowulf Live distro (kernel 4.19.0-14), and... no flickering! Kinda a relief, if you ask me... Now, where to start to look for the software defect? [DNG] SSL certificate or host mapping for ASCII updates for APT not right
I'm trying to 'apt update' an ascii box, and the repos in the apt source list point here: deb http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii main non-free contrib deb http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-security main non-free contrib deb http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-updates main non-free contrib deb-src http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii main non-free contrib deb-src http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-security main non-free contrib deb-src http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-updates main non-free contrib So. apt fails, and trying https://us.deb.devuan.org in a browser fails with certificate errors. wget for http: works, but https: also fails with certificate errors. /tmp# wget https://us.deb.devuan.org --2021-04-08 08:15:13-- https://us.deb.devuan.org/ Resolving us.deb.devuan.org (us.deb.devuan.org)... 152.228.204.144 Connecting to us.deb.devuan.org (us.deb.devuan.org)|152.228.204.144|:443... connected. The certificate's owner does not match hostname 'us.deb.devuan.org' This is a bit of the certificate info: /tmp# echo -n | openssl s_client -connect us.deb.devuan.org:443 Certificate chain 0 s:/CN=archive.devuan.org i:/C=US/O=Let's Encrypt/CN=R3 1 s:/C=US/O=Let's Encrypt/CN=R3 i:/O=Digital Signature Trust Co./CN=DST Root CA X3 https://archive.devuan.org does work and appears to list rational things, but not what's needed. Both hosts resolve to the same ip address: tmp# host archive.devuan.org archive.devuan.org has address 152.228.204.144 tmp# host us.deb.devuan.org us.deb.devuan.org is an alias for pkgmaster.devuan.org. pkgmaster.devuan.org has address 152.228.204.144 This seems to have changed in the last week or two. If you have a spare external keyboard, try using the machine with that for a while, so that you're working on the machine without actually touching it and causing any vibration. I suspect there's a cable between the mainboard and the display which is losing connectivity from time to time, and I would guess that that's most likely caused by you actually typing on the keyboard. As for a repair, I have no idea what it's like trying to get inside Dell laptops. Other makes which I've attacked with screwdrivers in the past have ranged from trivial to challenging, especially when some allow you to take a cover off and immediately see the mainboard; others require you to go in from the other side and remove almost everything from the machine before you can get to the board. I wish you luck, but at least you can be grateful it's not an Apple. [DNG] Gnome 3 Status
Hello Everyone! Somehow all this systemd buzz flew behind me, so it's a pity that I discovered all drawbacks that it has recently. Which lead me to understand that it's not an init system that I want. It's nice to see that here, a lot of people are doing the right thing, from my point of view. My own preference is 3rd Gnome. I can't see it in the official supported desktop environments list for the Beowulf release, but my testing in virtual machine shows that it works. Could you please advise me if it's stable enough to use it on a daily basis? Thank you. -- Best Regards, Mate ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

Sparing the details. /tmp# host deb.devuan.org deb.devuan.org is an alias for deb.roundr.devuan.org. Trying to browse http://deb.devuan.org/ still fails. What I hadn't tried was 'apt update', which I'm doing now after updating sources.list, and it is working, so apt doesn't exactly have the same cert issues. As such, any software not on the list of [banned package][0] should work as is. AFAIK the issue with Gnome is that it relies heavily on systemd components. Thus the choice to not propose it by default. However it should work just work by using elogind instead of consolekit.
