packages.devuan.org and pkgmaster.devuan.org have the same version of
any package. If anything, the former one is normally behind the latter
one by about 24 hours...

The problem on Vernon’s machine appears to be that his install of package
libpython3.5-stdlib=3.5.3-3 which doesn’t appear in the devuan repositories and
therefore is required to downgrade to get to the devuan
libpython3.5-stdlib=3.5.3-1.

This is the package you want for your device:
  https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=firmware-b43-installer
It's a deb, contrib package.

Thanks.  At this point in my investigation, I would like to know which version
ofB43 is loaded by netinst.iso.  tty4 show that B43 is loaded and is requesting
b43/ucode13.fw or b43-open/ucode13.fw.  From my searches so far, the error -2
is not an error, but a message that means it can't find those files.  It also
appearsthat netinst.iso is looking for them on the ramfs/initramfs and is not
looking on the
removable media.  I would like to know how to get to the source code for the
modulethat's putting up the messages on tty4 so I can study it and find out
what's really
going on.  While this may be a somewhat rare problem, it is quite  old problem
and
only the ucodeXX.fw value changes in the error -2 messages.  While I now know
howto fix the C700 at this point, I think the netinst.iso code needs to be
looked at.
How do I determine which source code I should be studying?  I assume its on
gethubsomewhere.  Thanks for any help.

Dan, you don't need to study any code, IMHO. b43-fwcutter works by
*extracting* the needed firmware from the Windows driver. So you need
the Windows driver for your wifi card, use b43fwcutter on it, get the
files, and put them under /firmware.

Please look online for confirmations. I had to do that at least a
couple of times in the past. I guess the procedure has not changed
much, if at all.

[DNG] npm and nodejs

2018-05-22 Thread Hendrik Boom
I'm trying to try out a package (joplin) that is built using nodejs.

Now the installation instructions seem to require npk, the nodejs package
manager.

And following links about npm, it appears that npm is part of nodejs.

But I have installed nodejs from the ascii repossitory and still don't seem to
be able to access npm.

There are some packages with npm in their names, but they look to be add-one
for npm rather than npm itself.

Any ideas? Is this an area where the Devuan packages are broken? Will I have
to go to foreign repositoories?

If you want nodejs you should install from the nodesource apt repository to get
the latest updates.

https://nodejs.org/en/download/package-manager/#debian-and-ubuntu-based-linux-distributions

https://github.com/nodesource/distributions/blob/master/README.md

Unfortunately those instructions rely on lsb_release providing the correct
output. There is a bug with lsb-release in ascii where it relies on parsing
sources.list for detection. If “lsb_release -sc” returns “ascii” then you’re
all fine but if it returns “testing” then you’ll just have to add the repo with
the manual instructions.

The devuan releases are aliased in the installer script to the Debian releases
so you should just use stretch in your sources list.

[DNG] [OT] Modification of audio power amplifier.

2018-05-22 Thread Edward Bartolo
Warning: Out of Topic. No relation to Devuan but to technology and electronics.

Since, I know some have knowledge of electronics and I am replacing an
amplifier's pre-driver stages I am posting here.

At present, I am opting to use a simple circuit for testing purposes.
This circuit uses a differential pair and the input stage. The
differential pair is supplied a pseudo-constant current (2.5mA) from a
two resistor chain with a Zener diode connected to ground. This
results in a fairly constant voltage that develops across one resistor
and the base-emittor junction. Therefore, the bias current can be
taken as constant. The output from the differential pair drives the
pre-pre-driver stage which has its collector resistor replaced by a
constant current source. This both provides a high impedance output
resistance for this stage and solves issue of using greater drive
current for the same output power.

My little hesitation at the this stage, is the biasing to remove
crossover distortion. I know a that two diodes are connected in series
but I want more control on the quiescent current in the output stages
as this can cause overheating and unnecessarily uses energy for no
output. Together with two series connected diodes I found some
amplifiers use also a preset resistor in series with the biasing
diodes to have more control. In my case, I think the choice may be an
amplified diode which is a transistor biased in such a way to behave
like a diodes but with modifiable characteristic. The latter
arrangement have the ability of presenting a voltage that ranges from
0.7V upwards whereas the former two start from 0.7 x 2 volts.

Excuse me for my intrusion. Someone might have met or read about a
biasing arrangement I have not heard of yet.

Thanks.
